on trinity santos, episode 15, and her relationship with whitaker:

one of the things that my friend and I realized while watching ep14 of the pitt together was that santos just doesn't know how to interact with men without it being a power struggle.

it often comes across as a problem with authority, but if you pay careful attention, it's actually MALE authority that unnerves her and puts her in an immediately on-guard, defensive place: robbie and langdon just cannot and will not get through to her.

meanwhile, it's dr. samira "are you aware you have an aggressive energy, trinity?" mohan, dr. "the patient doesn't give a shit" ellis, and of course, dr. yolanda garcia, who trained at the Flirting During Surgery school of medicine, who are actually able to get through to santos. women are the only ones who can meaningfully mentor her, bc she straight up only feels safe around them.

and given her past childhood sexual abuse from an older man, which ultimately led trinity's friend to kill herself, this makes complete sense.

so when you watch her interact with whitaker, who's an adult male and yet much more of a peer, you see her trying to assert herself over him from the very start: giving him a nickname, making fun of him, etc.

she's not mean: she fixes his nail in the first ep. santos doesn't consciously think "all men are bad, fuck all of them, that includes whitaker." she just doesn't know how to like... exist safely as equals with them, even if she would like to.

and whitaker, our sad midwestern meow meow, doesn't resist the way she talks to him. by the end of episode 15, he openly and clearly needs help ("between cars"). he's nice. she knows she could beat him in a fight re: krav maga. she has the power in the relationship -- but she needs even a slight upper hand, to feel safe, at least at first, and *whitaker lets her have it.*

and santos -- so awkwardly, so brutally, so kindly -- invites this man to live with her.

holy shit. it's whitaker who gives her the safe opportunity to establish a normal(ish) friendship with a man. for probably the first time in her life. she feels safe with him. GUYS. she knows how to feel safe with that one.

it's all those little advantages over him that make her feel safe. and slowly, eventually, she's going to let them slip away. and then she's still going to feel safe around him. and they're going to be friends. actual friends.

they are coming back to season 2 so absolutely pair-bonded you don't even know. by s2:ep7 i expect to see santos throwing hands against a patient in the ER to defend the safety and virtue of that boy. by s2:ep15 i expect to see santos willingly leaning her head on the shoulder of that man

they are going to heal each other
