sad reality of the fanfic-to-published work economy is that the weirdest people are willing to do it. that's why there's now hundreds of shitty no plot cishet hate-to-love enemies-to-lovers books that are ex reylo fanfic. and it's not even good. that's because the people who wrote book-quality steve/bucky and kirk/spock fic are too normal to think to themselves "i should get this porn published". they're too busy working in local government offices

You know ever since the news broke I’ve seen a lot of people draw the obvious parallels to what Neil did to calliopes story. And while I absolutely do think there’s something there specifically in how it relates to how Neil presented himself as a progressive while being anything but I think it’s nada’s story that has taken on a much much more sinister tone for me.

When I first read dream and nada’s story I was caught off guard by the fact that dream effectively rapes nada though the story avoids that fact and never address’s it the way it does dreams condemnation of her to hell. At the time I naively have Neil the benefit of the doubt for this as the story was clearly meant to reflect a lot of old school myths and legends and those often involved fucked up depictions of sex and disregard for consent. (I still didn’t like it but it wasn’t the game changer it would have been in any other setting for me)

But looking back now knowing what I do i feel like it reflects how neil himself probably views consent and what he did. What dream does to nada repeatedly ignoring her refusals the fact she actively runs away and even harms herself in her efforts to escape him is not treated as rape because dream “genuinely loves” nada,the fact he still wants her even after she literally harms herself to try and deter her isn’t treated as sinister it’s treated as a testament to how real dreams desire for her is. Unlike Maddox in calliopes story dream is never violent with nada he even “warns” her of what pursuing him means and that in effect he will disregard her consent or lack therefore in the future if she does.

And while the story and dream both acknowledge that his condemning her to hell was wrong the above is never treated for what it was rape,even when dream retrieves her from hell even when she slaps him and berates him for it what dream did is still treated as “love” or a result of it.

All this not to say that I think Neil believes he “loved” any of his victims but it gives me the distinct impression that Neil believes as long as active violence isn’t involve as long as the woman doesn’t physically struggle when it comes to the actual act it does not constitute rape even if consent is actively withdrawn never given or other attempts to avoid the interaction happen. Which given what we know of how he treated his victims is consistent with how he acts.

I want to believe one day when Neil’s gone and he no longer in any way benefits that I’ll be able to enjoy the sandman he wrote again and separate the art from the artist. But when it comes to the above and how it ties into his crimes and how dream himself is clearly on some level a self insert for Neil (to the point his appearance was clearly inspired by him in early art) I’m not sure I ever will.

Friendly reminder btw if you are going to watch season two of Sandman pirate it. Don’t send the message that Neil gaimans work is still profitable or desirable even after what he’s done.

I know some of you will say “but I want to support the actors!” They’ve already been paid you can support them by praising their work and supporting future projects that don’t involve a rapist. If the actors are decent people as I hope they are I promise you they will understand.

Not RTD burying his gay Doctor the day before Pride Month.

Gatwa WAS an amazing doctor btw he fit the role so well imo but the writing let him down.

Gatwa’s run makes me so sad. He could have been such an amazing doctor instead he was bogged down by Russel t Davies shit writing and nastalgia bait + reduced episodes.

Like the fact he’s had both his introduction and exit overshadowed by two of Davies previous characters is ridiculous.

The man deserved better and I hope his doctor at least gets a better chance in other doctor who media and possible reappearances in the future.

Like I dunno what will be worse if Billie piper really IS the next doctor or if this is a misdirect as some people are speculating since she wasn’t introduced AS the doctor because this not only means gatwa was overshadowed by David in his introduction but also not even by the next goddamn doctor in his exit.
