Every time I see first responders insist they’ve been poisoned by just existing around fentanyl, I want to scream.

Nurses and anaesthesiologists are around this shit every day and they aren’t dropping like flies. ‘But they wear gloves’ THEN WEAR GLOVES?! ‘But they wear masks’ THEN WEAR MASKS?! Not to mention that you need to be standing in a nebuliser of fentanyl residue for hours or soaking your hands in it for days to even get a noticeable amount in your system. It’s not this scary magic drug. You’re hundreds of times more at risk going for drinks after work.

There are also so many people every day who are given fentanyl intravenously without any prior experience with opioids and they’re fine. No, I don’t mean people trying drugs for the first time. I mean literally most general anaesthesia surgeries. Including outpatient ones.

If a first responder manages to stick a needle into a vein and inject a substantial quantity of fentanyl during an incident then a) they should go to the hospital like for any needle-stick injury and b) they need to think long and hard how they managed to do that.

Even touching something contaminated then licking your fingers won’t do much. There’s a reason it, as a normal drug, isn’t available in swallowable tablet form because it quite simply barely works.

The trend of first responders showing symptoms of what they claim to be fentanyl poisoning is actually, genuinely, considered an ongoing case of MPI (*edited from the old or maybe incorrect MSI acronym) and it’s horrific to me that more people aren’t paying attention even if just to say ‘look! our bias against addicts is directly causing major harm to our first responders!’

i feel like it's super disingenuous to be like "yeah you can absorb fentanyl through your skin" and then not elaborate further. yes, you can, but not in the way you're thinking. you can't fentanyl it by just...touching it. you can't absorb it by getting fent powder on your skin. you can't absorb it by touching something that's come in contact with fentanyl. you can't absorb it by getting liquid fentanyl on your hands.

you can absorb fentanyl by touching it through transdermal fentanyl patches.

they're like nicotine patches! kind of. they're formulated specifically to be absorbed through your skin. other forms of fentanyl are not designed like that; they're usually oral or injected into the bloodstream.

your skin is a barrier. it's designed to keep things out. if everything you touched just went right through your skin into your bloodstream there would be no point in having skin.

stop telling people "fentanyl can be absorbed by touching it" without explaining.
