Logan Mwangi
Logan Mwangi was born March 15th 2016 to Angharad Williamson and Ben Mwangi. Their relationship however was short lived and they split a few months after Logans birth. Williamson went through a brief marriage after this and later started a relationship with John Cole in spring 2019.
Jumping to July 31st 2021 at 05:46 BST Williamson called 999 frantically, shouting at the operator that her son was missing. She was mostly yelling about her son being gone, repeating his name over and over again, which can be viewed and dismissed as a completely normal reaction to your son being gone, (link to the original call so you can make your own opinion of the call: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQ7H0Tkc-hc ).
Police were dispached and Logans body was found on the same day. He was found in the River Ogmore, only 250m from his house. The injuries he was found with were called “catastrophic” and compared to those you find in road traffic accidents. His injuries varied from bruises to severe damage to his organsand have said to be consistent with child abuse, The injuries Logan was found with were believed to be caused hours to days before his death.
The same day, Williamson, Cole and an unnamed 14 year old boy were arrested.due to CCTV footage, which recorded Cole and the teeanger moving Logans body to the river at around 2am. There is also CCTV footage near their house, showing the light go on and off in Logans room in the middle of the night, as well as activity on Williamsons phone at the time she stated she was asleep. Williamson originally told the police that she did not know of any violence towards LOgan, only to later state that she was scared of Cole and that he had will kill her because “she had talked”.
Whilst in court, a large number of new information was released and confirmed.
As for the unnamed teeanger mentioned previously, theres not much known about him due to him being underage. He has however had a violent life. He had a “desire for violence” and has pushed Logan down the stirs before. On top of this, a support worker has heard him singing the words: "I love to punch kids in the head, it's orgasmic." The jury were told that the boy was a “complex, troubled and violent boy”. A family whom had previously lived with the boy stated as evidence that he threatended to kill them. He also made comment about wanting to kill Logan on July 26th, a few days before Logan was murdered. There is no information on the connection the teenager had with Cole and Williamson.
A week before his death (July 21st), Logan tested positive for covid and was shut in his bedroom for the week. A child gate was preventing him from leaving. During this week, Logan suffered a lot of abuse. One specific date we have is Thursday July 29th , where Williamson stated that Cole and the teenager beat Logan badly. Logan was pucnhed in the stomach twice by Cole, and then the teenager performed amartial arts move on Logan. After this, there is CCTV footage of Williamson and the teenager outside of the house in a confrontation, during which witnesses called Williamson was labelled as hysterical. Williamson told jurors that she was trying to get help for Logan post the beating, but a neighbour who overheard the conversation stated that he heard Williamson tell the teen to stop making a scene.
A month before his death, Logan was taken off the Child Protection Register, which he was originally on due to Coles convictions. They deemed the house situation as stable enough to take him off the register, which ended up being a decision that has caused widespread criticism, as it is not the first time social serivces have made a decision that has led to terrible consequences. On July 30th, a day before his death, an unscheduled visit to their property was made by a social worker Deborah Williams. She wasnt allowed in due to Logans isolation, but she was told Logan was a bit up and down, she didnt however see any reason to raise alarm.
The police investigation that took place happened very quickly and most of it was done without updating Williamson, which she was getting aggravated by (possibly and most probably because she knew they found something). Officers ended up occupying Williamson to the hospital where Logan was kept so she could identify the body. She however said more strange things and was sure they had mis identified Logan and that he was still alive. The final commment that really raised peoples suspicion was “I wish I had taught him to swim, I wish I had given him swimming lessons” before she was told his cause of death or where he was found.
As Williamson, along with Cole and the teenager were found guilty of murder. She was shouting and calling Cole a liar and murderer while being dragged from the dock.
Logan's father, Ben Mwangi, honoured his son outside court saying he "was the most beautiful boy whose life has been tragically cut short".
"The wonderful memories I have of my son will never be tarnished - they will forever be in my heart and my soul," he said.
"I loved him so much and somehow I have to live my life knowing I will never get to see him grow up into the wonderful man I knew he could be."
I think this case is very important, and will have a great impact, due to the implications from social services deeming the family as stable and not thinking its appropriate to intervene at any point. There have been a number of cases before where social services failed to intervene when they should have and this has led to tragedies. This always sparks great media interest and uproar, calling for social services to have a reform. Overall I think theres been too many cases where this has happened to let it off as a mistake on their part. Whilst i agree that anyone can misinterpret a situstion, its a little different when a child's life is on the line and this is a reoccurring theme. The most unbelievable thing about this case is that social workers had been visiting the family during the months that he had been abused, and still took him off the Child Protection Register. Knowing of Coles violent past, and seeing injuries on a child, i cant see how any social worker can pass it off as an accident, coincidence or any other story Williamson made up for the injuries.
Whatever happens due to this case, whether there is more of a focus on social workers not adequately performing their jobs or not, nothing can make up for all the pain Logan suffered, especially during the last days of his life. Though I am truecrime obsessed and have built up a bit of a wall between me and the cases i study, this one was definitely very difficult, i seriously cannot imagine what that poor boy went through. After reading a bit about him as a person, people around him called him a polite and vibrant child. Along with what his father said about him, its just all really hard to process. My condolences go to his family and all the people affected by his death.
