Fuck You, 2016
I'm sure I am not the only one that shares this sentiment. With the passing of David Bowie, and now with Carrie Fisher, and legends in between. The horrific events of violence that persist, the election of The Nutcracker, all of it. This year has completely blown in many ways. However, me being the glass-half-full-kinda-asshole that I am, I have observed something quite awesome about the final quarter of 2016. There has been more great music released in these last few months than has come out in a long time. In order to attempt to end this year on a positive note, whilst screaming and bawling and kicking and screaming on the inside (and some on the out), I have assembled a list of my top five albums that have been released in the final stretch of this awful year. With the exception of my obvious NIN choice, one cool aspect about this list is that it is not very artist or genre-biased, it is pretty inclusive of many different styles of music. This list will give you some insight into the various types of music floating across my synapses. Whilst we all ring in the New Year by sharing the chorus of FUCK YOU, 2016, we can all do so amid blasting these records. 5. deadmau5, W:/2016ALBUM/ Mau5-man Joel Z. brings his usual deep house record that blends together the analog and the digital synth delight. Standouts for me on this year's record are Deux Ex Machina and Imaginary Friends, which both have just the right amount of bass and grime, at the same time. 4. Run The Jewels, Run The Jewels 3 This combination of El-P and Killer Mike is inescapable, and this latest release raises their creative bar that much higher. El and Mike trade verses and hooks so effortlessly, and El-P’s dynamic, gritty, lo-fi production drives the socio-political vibe of the whole record. Use of samples and triggered loops blended with dirt and bass throughout. Standouts are Legend Has It, Stay Gold, and the final track A Report To The Shareholders / Kill Your Masters, which is a scathing take on this circus of an election that just passed. It also happens to feature a fire guest verse by Zach de la Rocha (Rage Against The Machine). 3. The Dillinger Escape Plan, Dissociation Tagged as the bands last effort they will put forth, DEP’s latest thrash-punk-rock masterpiece does not disappoint. Known for their latest incarnation of the band’s lineup, where Ben Weinman’s furry-ridden, tangent inducing riffs and rock arrangements meet Greg Puciato’s blend of roaring, then delicately, dreamingly, singing through choruses and bridges. Fans of their loudest, torrential fucking rock blizzards, or fans of their most gentle pieces, will love this record. The ebb and flow between serenity and roaring, volcanic eruption has always been the hallmark of their style between Greg and Ben, and this record captures this DNA on what many fans argue is their finest work to date. 2. Metallica, Hardwired… To Self-Destruct HOLY SHIT. What else can I say. Listen to the opening track Hardwired, and have any other reaction. I'll wait. The entire record is damn good, it references all of their best work from Kill Em All through the 90s, while progressing forward and cementing the core DNA of the band. James Hatfield’s iconic guitar riffs and Lars Ulrich’s drum work, which provides the necessary backbone for James and the boys to kick ass, deliver some of the band's best material. They've been busy as hell since putting out their last record, but Metallica show no signs of age or fatigue on Hardwired... To Self Destruct. I know I got some friends out there that are old Metallica fans. Do yourself a favor, check this shit out, seriously. 1. Nine Inch Nails, Not The Actual Events New NIN in 2016. A promise? A prediction? A fuckin dream? Well, it came, and luckily, it's cool as hell. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, now a full time member of the band, allowed themselves to be a little less slick and polite, and a little more loud and revolting. Some choruses are damn near unintelligible, but for me that just makes for an all the more interesting listen. It's gotta be picked apart, layer by layer, like an onion. The songs seem to be unabashedly self-referential, and fit right in with some of my favorites from the 90s, even parts of Year Zero. I'm also a HUGE fan of The Fragile: Deviations 1, all the unreleased material. Got damn its good. Overall, an awesome way to wrap up a fucking terrible year. Well friends ands foes, I guess that about does it. Cheers to this horrible, fucked up excuse for a year. Here's to the next one, and hoping we can only go up from here! https://itunes.apple.com/us/playlist/fuck-you-2016/idpl.47209b6226ae4fcc9dd93a3fe142ebdd http://live.deadmau5.com/ https://runthejewels.com/ http://dillingerescapeplan.org/ https://metallica.com/ http://www.nin.com/
