✒ Happy Birthday, Professor Albright!

The little prince eagerly tugs at the end of the other's coat, and as soon as the professor's focus shifts he is presented with the brightest of smiles and an improvised birthday bouquet. Well, more a haphazard assortment of flowers plucked directly from the royal gardens, really, but is it not the thought that counts?

       At no point did Cyrus suspect that the young prince might have remembered his birthday. After all, who would keep their tutor in mind when it came to such things? Cyrus was fond of the king and his son, but he was not family. If anything, he considered himself of little importance; a peripheral figure in their lives most likely forgotten the moment he left the room.

       Clearly, this was not the case.

       “For me?” he asked, accepting the rather unusual collection of plants. “Why, thank you, Your Highness! How wonderfully thoughtful of you!”

       Getting down on M’hilo’s level was tricky given how tiny he was, but Cyrus made the effort. He knelt far enough down to wrap his arms around the prince’s little body, holding him tight to show appreciation. In moments like that, Cyrus could almost imagine what a father must feel holding his own child. What a glorious thing... It was a shame Cyrus could only get this small taste of it.

       “It is so sweet of you to remember me on this day...”

All day they had, indeed, and many more, Olberic would hope. But now is hardly the time for such thoughts, now is a time for joy.

“ Hmm… I have never been particularly good with words. Actions, on the other hand… ”

He laughs, kissing Cyrus again, staying there as long as he could. And only when he had to stop did he, but even then it followed more.

There is no warmth quite like that of these quiet, tender moments they share. And Olberic wouldn’t dream of having it any other way. Oh, how he adores when he loves, so genuinely and wholeheartedly, ‘tis enough to bring him to his knees.

       “Then go ahead and speak with your actions, my dearest knight! I am listening!”

       Like Olberic, Cyrus could not help but laugh as they kissed again, the sounds of their giddiness filling the air between each kiss. No matter how many times they kissed, he was no less adoring, no less excited. He loved Olberic, and by the gods, it showed.

       Cyrus’s hands tangled in Olberic’s hair. His fingertips carefully twirled the greying strands. Such had become a habit in the time they’d been lovers. He was an affectionate man, one who could hardly keep his hands off his partner when they were together. It took virtually nothing to prompt him to hold, caress, and make over Olberic, and that was doubly true when Olberic was being similarly affectionate, just as he was now.

       “I could stay like this forever, you know.”

Therion hands Cyrus yet another wood carving this time in the shape of a cat. "Happy birthday Albright, you never seem to mind my cat showing you affection, so I thought you might like this."

       “It is so little!”

       The small wooden effigy clearly amused and delighted Cyrus, who eagerly scooped it up to examine it more closely. He twirled it between his fingers, smiling at its obvious resemblance to Dorothea ( of whom he was very fond ). Had things been different, he might have considered having a cat of his own, but short of that, a wooden cat would do just fine.

       After giving the tiny wooden cat a good once-over, Cyrus gently tucked it into an outer pocket of his book bag, making sure its head poked out so it could be seen by all. “Thank you, Therion! This is the perfect companion to dutifully guard my books!”

Olberic wastes no time in picking Cyrus up right off the ground for a moment to kiss him deeply, a smile on his lips as he does. With a laugh, he speaks quietly into Cyrus'. " Happy birthday, my dear. " He says, voice gentle and oh, so full of love, something equally reflected in his eyes. " I fear I love you more than I can express. "

       Cyrus’s reaction was, as always, one of delight. His lover’s embrace ever a source of joy, he could not help but burst into a grin as he was lifted off the ground. He didn’t mind feeling small when it came to being hoisted up. In fact, it made him feel comfortable and safe.

       Plus, it was almost always followed by a kiss.

       A soft sigh escaped Cyrus’s lips as they met with Olberic’s. So sweet was their love. So pure, yet also shameless. Cyrus had not a care in the world as long as they kissed, and unsurprisingly, this kiss lasted plenty long. They were in no rush at all to part, with the passage of time all but forgotten in that happy moment.

       Eventually, however, it did end. The two pulled away, and Cyrus’s smile returned as he gazed into the beautiful, dark eyes of the love of his life. The mutual tenderness in their gazes was undeniable. Had the others been around to witness it, they might have rolled their eyes and groaned. But they were not there. This moment was for Olberic and Cyrus alone.

       “And I you, I might say.” Then something in his smile changed; a hint of mischief was there, showing through despite his efforts to stay halfway serious. “But I do invite you to try and express it! I have all day, after all. You might as well give it a shot, don’t you think?”

       “More often than you might think,” Cyrus admitted with a heavy heart, “though the reason why often differs... But usually it is guilt; guilt over how I treated the others while numb, or guilt for eventually recovering nearly in full while the others still suffer complications. It seems unfair that the only thing I lost is something I also regained.”
