We are excited to have Dr. Matthew Galumbeck from Galumbeck Plastic Surgery guest posting on our blog today. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 300,00 Mommy Makeover procedures were performed last year. So we asked him, “What exactly is a ‘Mommy Makeover’?”. Here is his response:
Pregnancy can produce changes to a woman’s body that no amount of diet and exercise can improve. The effects on body shape, muscle tone, skin elasticity and fat distribution may become more noticeable after each pregnancy.
In addition, breastfeeding can play a role in changes of breast size, shape and position.
A mommy makeover is actually a combination of two or more plastic surgery procedures that aim at enhancing and rejuvenating a woman’s post-pregnancy form.
The plastic surgery procedures for mommy makeovers include:
Breast Augmentation
Breast Lift
Breast Augmentation and Lift
Breast Reduction
 Body Contouring
Laser Liposuction
Tummy Tuck
During the consultation, I listen to each patient express her concerns and goals. I discuss the options for a mommy makeover, and together we create an individualized treatment plan to create long lasting results with minimal down time.

Saying Goodbye to Vintage Wild Orchid
Tumblr media
Most days I use this space to post pictures of my favorite local finds and events in the area. Just pictures with few to no words since I know as readers your time is limited.
Today’s blog is going to be a little bit different and quite longer than usual, so please bear with me...
I moved to Virginia Beach from Montana in the spring of 2012 with my husband and newborn baby boy. We didn’t have any family here and had never been to the area (as a matter of fact, there was a time when I thought I was moving to the Hamptons after hearing the area described as Hampton Roads, which is another story for another time).  As the Editor for the new Scout Guide in the area, I fell in love with my new community through daily meetings with small business owners in Virginia Beach & Norfolk. They inspired me, offered valuable advice about running a business, introduced me to other moms with small kids, and filled me in on where to eat, where to shop and what to do on weekends. In other words, they turned this unknown area into a home for me and my family and I am incredibly thankful for their kindness.
Terri Marko and Becky Winter, of Vintage Wild Orchid, are two of the business owners I am referring to. I can still remember the first time I walked into their charming shop.
The store was unlike anything else in the area. I was captivated by the white & neutral colored decor and European farmhouse furniture. It was bright, calming, sophisticated and yet casual. Vintage Wild Orchid was a true gem and I knew it would be perfect for Scout.
I got to know Terri and Becky well that first year and couldn’t help but stay for longer than planned every time I stopped by to discuss a photo shoot or blog post. I loved listening to the stories behind their finds and hearing about their vendors. Becky’s eye for display was simply perfection and Terri’s style is one I always try to emulate. My favorite pieces of furniture were bought in Vintage Wild Orchid as well as some of my favorite clothes. They even had a clothing line that I loved so much that they would text me every time a new shipment came in.
And really, did anyone do Christmas in Virginia Beach like Vintage Wild Orchid? I am not being dramatic in saying that it was magical. A winter wonderland at its finest! My three boys get pick out one Christmas ornament every year from the store and it is always the one they love looking at the most on our tree at home.
But Vintage Wild Orchid was more than the flawless decor and unique finds. There are numerous examples of this, but one in particular sticks out.
One day I walked into the store trying to look like I had it all together, when on the inside I was a wreck. My second child was a few months old and not sleeping at all and my oldest, a one-year-old, was starting to act out. I hadn’t slept in at least two days, felt like a total failure as a mom, and was exhausted.
Terri immediately saw through my fake smile and asked if everything was ok. After I told her about the sleepless nights Terri smiled and told me she knew exactly what to do. She walked me step by step through what she did with her children while I sat there and wrote everything down. This morning I actually found the notebook where I wrote the notes and there are three pages of them, front and back.
A few days later I received a book from her that was similar to the advice she gave me. In a card with the book, she told me to keep the book and then pass along to a friend needing help with getting their little one to sleep. Earlier this year I got to do just that!
My point is this- small businesses like Vintage Wild Orchid are invaluable to our community. Their carefully curated items are selected with their customers, often specific ones, in mind. The experience of shopping in a small local business, from hearing the back story of a truly unique dresser to continuing a family tradition, cannot be had in a big box store or on Amazon. The personal connection between the customer and shop owner is what makes a store like Vintage Wild Orchid so special.
As many of you know, Vintage Wild Orchid will be closing its doors in a few weeks. They are having an ENORMOUS sale that you do not want to miss. And, even if you do not need anything at the moment, please stop in and say thank you to Terri.
I know I am not alone in knowing I will miss this shop dearly, especially when Christmas time rolls around. But I know every year I will smile looking at my boys’ ornaments hanging on the tree and that somewhere there is a new mom getting passed down a book that will finally help her get some sleep :)
