ITSAY writers truly decided to DESTROY everyone. No wonder episode 4 hurt like a bitch.

itsay writers: calling back to props/images with different emotions

hi itsay nation! here’s p’kade and p’junior from that same 12/2 panel talking about episode 4 and how they called back to various props and images in itsay. previous translations are at my itsay translated tag. please don’t repost, or at least link back here if you do.

p’junior said they wrote episode 4 with the intention of having it culminate with teh giving up his spot, and oh-aew refusing to take it. p’kade said everything had to be ruined for teh’s character here in terms of the admissions exam, and the most satisfying/complete way to communicate that is to have him give up everything, only to have oh-aew refuse it, until teh has nothing left. and that was the core message they were trying to communicate to the audience, and it had to be at the most extreme level.

p’junior said in that scene, the writing team was asking themselves, “what needs to happen to teh for him to hurt the most?” which led to the final build-up: giving up his spot, to going to his room and seeing the uniform his mom bought for him, to opening the checkbook and seeing that hoon gave him tuition money, to checking his instagram story and seeing that oh-aew is using the scrapbook–that teh made for him with his own hands–to insult him. originally it was supposed to just end there because that already felt pretty extreme.

but then p’junior said they realized that the argument would have led to the characters deciding to study for the admissions exam, to compete again, which then reminded them of how the chinese book was still there, already cut out. and he explained that it’s an example of referencing a prop/image that had already been referenced earlier on [the phrase he uses here is like “lay it out and then slap”]. when kru jeab asked about examples of other times they did this, p’kade brought up the examples of the flashcards, the sidecar, and the back scratching.

p’junior said the simplest way to do this [to call back to an earlier image] is that whatever emotion you introduce the prop/image with, bring it back [or “slap” it] with a different emotion. p’kade added: “so that it evokes a different kind of feeling.” for example, p’junior said the flashcards were introduced in episode 2 with a romantic feeling, but then ended in that same episode with sadness and an apology. the sidecar was introduced in episode 1 with a teenage, coming-of-age feeling of embarrassment, but ended in that same episode where once teh started to be into oh-aew, he was willing to ride the sidecar to the front of the school even though it was the most embarrassing thing he could have done. and in episode 4, the chinese book was introduced with teh’s intention to apologize to oh-aew, and was referenced again in that episode with the feeling of loss and helplessness once he had given up his spot only for oh-aew to turn it down.
