since receiving oscar’s message, yn had no idea what to do about it. she spent days thinking of what to say, and how to say it. there was no way she’d be taking him back instantly, the break up hurt her too much for her to be willing to do that.

although, if he could genuinely prove that he wasn’t going to change his mind again in the future, she was open to putting it all behind them. what she needed to know was that he wasn’t going to accuse her of not being there for him again.

that was what she found most unfair about the reasoning behind their break up.

she had always tried to be there for him, no matter the distance, and no matter the time in her home city. if he needed her, she supported him.

as the days passed, she realised she needed to text him back. even if it was just a simple message, she needed to respond. she wanted to respond.

walking into the cafe down the road from her house, yn immediately spotted oscar sat at their usual table. he looked ridiculously stressed, but so was she and the unusual clamminess of her hands reflected that.

taking a deep breath, she walked over and sat down opposite him. “hi,” she breathed, almost surprised her legs hadn’t forced her to walk right out of there and go back home.

“hey,” he gave her a half smile. “thank you for wanting to talk to me. i know i screwed up big time, i just… yeah.”

she nodded. “of course. what did you want to talk about that couldn’t be said over text?”

“everything i said that day… i wish i could take it all back,” he sat back in his chair and began anxiously fiddling with his hands. “i don’t even know why i said any of it, i didn’t mean it at all. you’ve been so supportive since day one and no distance changed that. i’m a fucking idiot for ruining everything.”

yn crossed her arms, leaning forwards so they rested on the table. “why did you say all of that?” she asked. “you’re saying that you didn’t mean it but… why say it then?”

oscar took a deep breath. “i don’t know,” he ran his hand over his face. “i really don’t. i can’t take it back, as much as i wish that i could, but i will do whatever i can to make it up to you.”

“look, i just need to know that if we get back together, you’re not going to do that again.”

“i promise you, i will never do anything like that ever again.”

pacing back and forth in his monaco apartment, oscar had written and deleted at least 5 messages to yn in the last 30 minutes. to say he was stressed would be an understatement.

he had been keeping up with her through her instagram, which he knew was a little creepy but he’d known her for 15 years. they had never gone more than a week without talking to each other and he missed her.

throughout the last 7 races of the season, he missed her presence. oscar had never realised how much she actually texted him and how much she tried to be there for him in any way she could. even when their time zones were completely different, she still wanted to call him, willing to sacrifice her sleep schedule.

as for him, he realised he hardly put in any effort. it wasn’t intentional but every conversation was started by her, and every call was initiated by her. rereading the messages was driving him crazy, and made him wonder why it was him who ended things and not her.

all the times he’d said no to calling replayed in his mind over and over again. he missed her voice most of all. it had been months since he’d heard her, and it had been months before they even broke up.

after an hour of reeling, he finally had a message written. all he had to do now was find the courage to actually send it.
