lots of ppl have mixed opinions on cardan in the first book, which is fair, but me personally, just LOOK at how subtle he is at protecting her. and i don’t just mean when he stuck his foot in the water to scare the nixies away from jude when his buds threw her and Taryn in the river, i mean these:

This one, when he thinks that dains spies are about to beat Jude’s ass over who gets the pretty prince, so he cautions her away from picking a fight w them. And that’s AFTER she’s kidnapped him LOOLLL

And this. really cute and subtle way of saying “be careful babe!” but he makes it seem sorta like an insult. like she would be wasting his time if she went and died. he keeps himself so well guarded so as to not get himself hurt again PLS. guys i am normal about him.

And then this one. imagine how he felt seeing her leave the tower covered in blood knowing that valerian was in there w her. and Hollys annotation here. yeah ok im so normal- this proves that he didn’t expect his cruelty to encourage valerians murdery lust for jude. to encourage Locke to take her as his prize, to encourage nicasia to humiliate the twins to get cardans and lockes favor.

But i just LOVE how cardan knows how jude is, the way that Taryn describes jude in her novella- as someone who doesn’t back down from a dare, who picks fights with anyone and everyone, who brings those that pick on her down to her level. he knows his wife so well, even in the first book, he knew her so much better than even her father. than ANYONE even Taryn. bc Taryn was all like “promise you’ll stop bothering them!” Like do you KNOW who you’re talking to lmao

I recently found an old reblog post about jurdan being in an arranged marriage and I want to bring it up again.

So the premis goes that after Dain frames Cardan for killing Val Moren's mortal lover instead of Eldred sending Cardan to Balekin, he gets the idea that Cardan must feel the pain he caused. He makes a deal with Madoc to arrange a marriage of their youngest children, and have Cardan live with Madoc's family. Eldred figures Madoc's protection will offer the girl enough time for Cardan to get attached, but very few mortals survive in Elfhame.

(Side note I do not remember when/how old Cardan was when he got sent to Balekin and if it lines up when Madoc brought the sisters to Elfhame. I'm also not digging out my book right now, so let's just pretend it does.)

Cardan being terrified that he's been sent away ends up clinging to Jude. I mean she has to love him, right? That's why she's his punishment. Jude doesn't know what to make of Cardan at first. She's still the scared girl who hides under tables at revels, now she has one more who joins her and her sister. She's distrustful of Cardan for a while but reluctantly let's him tag along mainly because Madoc said so. Genuine love between them does form earlier on in this timeline.

They both stress poor Oriana's nerves so much when they do start showing signs of attraction to one another. Because on one hand yes they are to be married but on the other her past as a consort has her keeping a close eye on them. She about fell over when she learned Cardan never once slept in his room and he's been having (platonic) sleepovers with Jude.

Cardan in this universe, I think, would be a mixture of Madoc and Oriana's teachings. He would still have his mask to the public and would definitely lean a little more into Oriana's teachings. But there is also no way Madoc is letting Cardan get away with sloppy sword form. He frankly doesn't care if Cardan kills or not, but he will damned if any ward of his doesn't know how to hold a sword right.

Madoc also 100% has Cardan for a backup in case the coup that should crown Oak fails. Not that he's telling anyone of that plan.

Hello! I read your tfota post on how Jude has always had a crush on Cardan and vice versus (I really enjoyed your analysis btw). The evidence you used was of how she thought of him to make herself feel better after finding out about Locke and Taryn. In the post, you mentioned that you were going to do a separate post on Nicasia and Cardan since he had feelings for Jude during this relationship. Have you ever written it?
