Eva Duarte ran from Madoc, that fact is constantly mentioned throughout the books, but no one ever dwells on the fact that she left her kids behind with the guy who just killed their dad. everyone is like "oooh Madoc killed the Duartes, what a horrible violent bastard" but no one mentions Justin was the one who tried to kill him first. Jude ultimately decides she doesn't wanna know if her parents killed a pregnant human girl or not during their escape from Elfhame, and it paints better than anything the fact that no matter how much she imagines her bad parts as a product of Elfhame, her human parents were clearly not totally pure either. and yet Madoc talks about both of them with such tenderness, only mentioning their accomplishments and virtues. I am so so so curious about wtf went down between those 3 in Elfhame you have no idea

why do you think the fae hate the humans so much? like it’s not like they’re fully immortal themselves (they only don’t age but can be killed by external things) and also they would die out without humans

the damage humans have done to this earth is nearly impossible to repair. think of climate change, of pollution, of every single thing that is bad for the environment. it can almost all be traced back to humans.

since the fae live in forests and in corners of human worlds, they are directly impacted by human actions.

worse of all, the fae hold grudges for life. whereas humans can come, grow up, do their damage, and then die. a short life lived, not one long enough for the fae to carry out the usual promises or grudges or bargains that they do with each other. (Though they do it anyway)

Human life to them is not only destructive, but it is so fleeting that our lives can seem worthless to them. to most fae, they can get the occasional entertainment from a human, but those humans will die.

the fae are everlasting creatures w everlasting promises, and so in their eyes, it may seem easy to live a life unbound by words and promises and debt to repay.

there is also envy. i read once that the greatest mercy is to be mortal. to die one day. because mortals live their lives in search of happiness, in search of love and purpose. we cherish things, little things in life because we don’t have thousands of years to do so.

dying eventually is a mercy. living your life forever can easily be perceived as miserable. Watching life and lives of others fly by, especially being a faerie and watching human lives fly by.

it’s easier for mortals to not hold grudges, what’s the point if we are going to die eventually, right? might as well get over it.

then there’s the fertility. human women and men are both more fertile and likely to have a child than the average faerie.

we humans reproduce like crazy while the fae do not. they even sometimes have to thicken their own bloodlines by having a child w a human, because they do not often have a choice.

Then they use those humans as midwifes, slaves, whatever it may be.

then there’s the advancing of our societies. look at elfhame compared to the mortal world. they use swords, knives, poison etc. outdated compared to human technology, which is also extremely destructive. roiben was actually shot at by glamoured humans w guns in tmft lol.

it’s easy to understand how they may be irritated by our quick lives, but our quick ways of ending them as well. and those quick ways are usually totally destructive.

this human technology has rapidly advanced in the past hundred years or so, which i can imagine has really pissed them off. if the fae are as old as i imagine (15,000 years tops tbh) then they’ve had it easy.

they could’ve blended in w humans easily, there’s a lack of chemicals in the air, the foods edible to them.

Opposed to now. There’s cameras everywhere so they can’t get up to their mischief like they used to, the foods pumped full of chemicals, the waters full of lead, and worst of all— News spreads FAST. now that we can text each other and see worldwide news, from anywhere, the fae probably have to stay REALLY lowkey. they risk their existence being discovered by human governments.

i have searched desperately for any indication in holly blacks books that the humans (perhaps their government) are aware of the fae bc of new technology, but there seems to be no info on it.

even in a town where all of the residents know of the fae, where police cover up faerie disturbances, there’s little to no info on the bigger picture.

but what I’m trying to say is, the fae can hate humans as a whole for our destructive ways and ability to reproduce and colonize.

there are so many fucking humans man. all over the place. and we just keep discovering and colonizing more land.

and then there’s human fight or flight. imagine a faerie chilling in the woods when a hiker comes by and freaks out at the sight of something he considers to be unnatural or uncanny or nonhuman. he’s either gonna fight it out, or run the hell away. probably screaming his head off on the way. since the fae are easily offended, i can imagine how irked they may be at human disruption and what they probably see as arrogance and great insult.

since humans have inflicted so much suffering onto their own world, not caring for the species around them, it seems like the fae have widely accepted the humans as fair game. theirs to make fun with, to play with, to use, to hurt, to eat, whatever.

if you think about it, us humans do that to animals do we not? we eat them, take them as pets, put them in zoos, teach them tricks, and some of the eviller humans do worse.

and offf course, im sure humans would be quick to profit off of faerie magic. to weaponize and use glamour, to dissect and do awful things to the fae. we already do that without them around.

they know this I’m sure, and so they stay mostly away.

i know it was once stated that the high king eldred had some sort of policy in place for the harming of humans to be limited to some extent, but it was never described fully. it seems up to the lord and ladies / kings and queens of the lower courts. they just control what their people do i guess.

in the modern faerie tales, since Kaye wasn’t sacrificed, some treaty protecting humans expired, and so the fae went batshit crazy on the humans in the area.

they undressed them, glamoured them, their bodies littered streets. one kelpie ended up killing a human girl. i vaguely recall reading that and being horrified. in valiant, they used a human boy to do some faerie killing which ended pretty badly on his end.

BUT on the bright side it was mentioned once that cardan, under Jude’s rule, lessened hardships for humans, atleast on the isles of elfhame, as all of balekins human servants were gone and didn’t return.

Add on: it must be pretty humbling for a species that is widely considered to be utter shit to also have such a ridiculous amount of power. to see that species everywhere running rampant in a world they are actively destroying but being able to do nothing. despite being a magical immortal.

imagine being immortal knowing that right before your eyes the world you know and love will never be the same,, having to just watch humans wreck it, those humans who will never live to see the product of their destruction. like damn. typing this out and IM starting to hate humans LOL

ANYWAY

the fae have every reason to hate humans. i get it. i dont agree with their methods OBVIOUSLY, but since the fae hold such grudges forever, im surprised the fae haven’t been pissed off enough to wipe them all out.

maybe their chance to do so is long past, so they simply enslave and brutalize many humans to make up for it.

anyway expect me to be posting a tad more, finished my hardest class so we chilling. 🫶 and as always, feel free to add on!
