Week11|36 photos

This week, I tried to shoot a new style in which I tried to blend elegance with cool elements. Against the backdrop of the night, this style is particularly unique, creating a strong visual collision effect. The mystery and stillness of the night is reflected in the models' stylish outfits and confident poses, creating a captivating atmosphere. This attempt not only enriches my photography work, but also gives me a new breakthrough and inspiration in artistic expression. In this way, I hope to show a different visual experience and emotional resonance. Each photo is a new exploration, which makes my understanding of photography more profound and diversified.

The headlights and licence plates of the cars in the background emit a soft light that illuminates the model's face and upper body. The warm colours of the light create a warm and slightly mysterious atmosphere. The nighttime background and warm lighting make the overall atmosphere of the photo mysterious and lonely, as if the model is thinking or waiting for something.
There is a noticeable halo and blur effect in the photo, possibly achieved through reflections in front of the lens or the lens being out of focus, adding to the artistic feel of the image. Warm tones of orange and red dominate the image, creating a warm and slightly mysterious atmosphere, while the contrast of the model's cooler skin tones enhances the image.

Week 9|36 photos

Through researching night portraits by other photographers, I decided to shoot a variety of styles of material for my collection. Different outfits and poses can significantly enhance the richness and visual appeal of the overall result. Each shooting style not only focuses on fashion presentation, but also emphasises individual expression. I try to use street-appropriate clothing combining different backgrounds and lighting effects to bring out the unique charm of each photo. This approach not only makes my work more diverse, but also better conveys the emotions and stories behind each subject.

Week 9|Draft Photo book
This is my first attempt to use Lightroom to create an photobook. Through analysing the layout of the physical book before, I deeply understand the concept of "less is more". Piling up too many photos on an interface will easily distract the readers' attention, but will reduce the overall effect of the work. Therefore, I decided to put only two or so selected photos on each page to highlight the uniqueness of each photo and enhance the reader's visual experience and emotional resonance.

The exhibition "Belgrade Art Inc. - Momente des Umbruchs" explores the role of art in Belgrade in the context of social and political change, covering works from the 1920s to the present day. The exhibition showcases a variety of art forms, including photography, video, and installation, reflecting the artists' work in different historical contexts. The works reveal the intersection between the city and art, history and modernity, presenting Belgrade's rich cultural and artistic tradition through a variety of creative approaches and perspectives.
Photography is not only a visual art, but also a carrier of emotions and stories, conveying deep emotions and moving stories through images. I plan to focus on capturing real emotional moments during the shooting process and tell emotional and meaningful stories through composition, light and shadow, and colour.

WEEK 9 CLASS WORK
What and who will you portray?
I will depict the state of my friend in the darkness of the night. What might you communicate visually through the concept of portrayal?
The darkness and limited light sources at night can make portraits appear mysterious, adding depth and attraction to the image while street lights, neon signs, etc. can create an emotional atmosphere of melancholy or loneliness. Through the use of light, shadow and background elements, night portraits can convey a multi-layered visual message. What is your position on your subject matter?
Through the study of this semester, I think portrait photography I would like to focus most on the effect of light on people and the expression of emotions, in my continuous attempts I found that night photography such as street lights, neon lights or torches can create unique light effects at the same time the night environment can be better to express a specific emotion such as loneliness, romance or mystery. What is your voice? What is unique about your subject or your approach to it?
The dark background often makes the characters appear more prominent and the viewer's attention is more focused on the characters themselves and the expression of their inner world. Night photography can better highlight the personality and emotions of the characters. The uniqueness of this theme lies in the use of the environment: background elements such as cities, streets and natural environments at night can add colour to a portrait. Neon lights, headlights, buildings, etc. can be the highlight of the picture, adding storytelling and interest to the work. Compared to daytime, night is more likely to create a deep, introspective emotional atmosphere.
What do you have unique access to? A group of people, a place, a situation…?
I think the most unique thing about shooting portraits in the dark is the special light source, using the unique light to create futuristic or vintage looking portraits. Unique colours can add a unique visual effect to the image. I will also try different styles to let the audience experience the versatility and multiple beauties of the dark night. Consider the important role the title takes in communicating your intention and how audiences might ‘read’ the book. What is your working title?
"Capturing Beauty in the Dark" This title directly emphasises light and beauty, appealing to viewers interested in visual effects and aesthetics. What would you like readers to think and feel?
It is hoped that when the reader views each portrait photograph, he or she can feel the emotions expressed by the person in the photograph, such as loneliness, contemplation, romance, melancholy, and so on. Through the emotional transmission of the photographs, the reader will be able to empathise with them as if he or she were in the situation of the photographs. By choosing different styles of shooting, we can flexibly create diverse visual effects and emotional expression, making night portrait photography more attractive and infectious. What is the role of the text within the book? How does the text relate to the story the images tell? How do they work together?
Text provides background information behind the picture, helping the reader to better understand the setting, time and subject of the photograph. It enriches the storytelling of the picture by enriching the information not directly expressed in the picture. The reader understands the background of creation through the text, and then feels the results of creation through the pictures, obtaining a complete appreciation experience.
How many shoots do you require to gain adequate coverage and successfully tell the story?
I will be shooting a set of photos every week to make sure it's a different style each time. Do you need gear and support with your shoots? What is your plan?
Shooting in the dark places high demands on photographic equipment, such as high sensitivity cameras, large aperture lenses and stable tripods. Proper post-processing can also make up for some of the deficiencies in low-light shooting. What software and workflow will you use to edit, process, collate and design your photobook PDF?
I will be using Adobe Photoshop for colour grading using Adobe Lightroom for editing and finally using In Design to design and edit my text. What is your research plan?
Determine the topic and objective of the study
check other photographers' references on night photography (Yangjihoon)
Field shooting
Post-processing
Text writing
Layout and cover design
Evaluation and summary
What other photobooks have you looked at?
“Aperture” Magazines & Journals Are there decisions that have yet to be made? How will you resolve these?
I don't have a lot of photo material to choose from and will be experimenting with different styles for the photobook over the next few weeks.

Week Eight|36 photos
This week, I started working on my photography book in preparation. I chose a common but very expressive style - casual. This style is like the way we dress when we go to school, both natural and full of youthful vigour.
During the filming process, I was thinking about how to capture a distinctive style in the limited light of the night. I try to use different angles and compositions to capture each unique moment.
In this way, I hope to break through the traditional shooting mode and show the contrast between light and shadow in the darkness of the night.

Week8
This week I visited the AUT library and viewed albums to familiarise myself with album editing, sequencing and design researching how the design and text of books affects the understanding and interpretation of image sets.
Typography plays a crucial role in a photography book, which not only affects the reader's visual experience, but also directly relates to the expression of the photographs and the overall artistic value. I have learnt that good typography creates visual balance and symmetry, making readers feel comfortable and happy when flipping through the pages. Appropriate white space and space allocation can highlight the theme of the photo, make the picture look uncrowded and enhance the visual impact.

I attempted to edit the photographs in Photoshop, adjusting and enhancing the colours to compensate for the lack of vibrant ambient colours caused by the weather conditions. My goal was to highlight more depth and detail and create a more attractive and visually appealing result. While this attempt was a valuable learning experience, the final image was not as perfect as I had hoped. There is still room for improvement in my editing techniques.

Holiday Shooting Challenge
During holidays, I tried to take photos of my friends, exploring different styles and sensibilities. Under the sunny trees, I used changes in light and shadow to capture natural smiles and laid-back poses. At the beach, I use colourful backgrounds to record their moments of being one with nature, showing a free and relaxed atmosphere. At night, I make use of streetlights and flash to create unique light effects, capturing the unique mystery and romance in the night. Through these different shooting attempts, I hope to find the shooting method that best suits my style and create a distinctive visual experience and emotional resonance.

Holiday Shooting Programme
Photography Event Template
Who do you want to photograph?
I plan to take photos of my friends to capture their unique personalities I want to document the joys and sorrows. Through the lens of the camera, I hope to preserve these precious memories and create a visual story.
What connects this group of people?
I am exploring the art of photography and shooting different styles, each with their own unique style and characteristics. I try to photograph what resonates with me as a photographer. By photographing people from diverse backgrounds with a unique sense of style, cultural expression and personal aesthetic, I aim to refine my artistic vision and identify the types of subjects I am most passionate about capturing through my lens.
What do they have in common?
I plan to photograph young, energetic college students.
What are the potential strengths of the concept?
The potential advantage of photographing the concept of college students is that they are dynamic and can create a unique atmosphere. Not only do they display youthful vigor and boundless creativity, but they also bring visual richness through their diverse interests and unique personalities. This energetic and personalized expression not only makes the photos dynamic and interesting, but also attracts the viewer's attention through stark contrasts and unique perspectives, which in turn highlights a distinctive photographic style.
What are the potential threats or weaknesses of the concept?
A potential threat or weakness in photographing college students is that they may not be able to display the same composure and professionalism as business people. College students usually have a younger, energetic and youthful style, which, while a strength, also means they may lack the maturity to be expressive.
