As men, we are often powerless because of a simple lack of knowledge. The first step to being a reliable non-birthing parent is being trusted to have a healthy appetite for knowledge as it concerns the actual health of those outside of ourselves. One of the first practical tools a non-birthing parent can put into physical action with their infant is the Apgar test. The Apgar test measures a newborn's immediate vitality with minimal instruments. The test consists of five parts and ranges in score from 0-10. It measures heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone, Color, and Suction Responds. The test is then conducted five minutes later to give a rough determination of how well the baby will fare in the future. A test score on both the one-minute and five-minute tests is ideally 10. However, any score above 7 is considered a newborn in good condition. A score of 4-6 is cause for concern and the newborn should be monitored closely for the first few days. A score lower than four is critical and is an indicator that the infants need immediate medical intervention. I suggest any home-birthing parent with an infant with a score below 7 seek medical attention asap. Please continue to like and follow for more information. Healing is in the reflection. I’m talking to the man in the mirror. I have come to realize that every interaction with my children is, in a way, an interaction with my younger self. The moment of conversation with them is an opportunity to have a healing conversation with myself! I don’t take any opportunity to spend time with my children lightly. Even if we are just cracking jokes on each or crying over heart ache, I approach both with the same intensity and attention. Life is busy and time is illusioned as short, make ever moment count. We don’t often get to spend much time with our children. If it’s only five minutes a day make them without distracted and fully immersive! You’d be surprised how much five uninterrupted minutes can make a difference, the relief mom gets from Five Minutes Alone, and the bond of connection will be strengthened immensely throughout the whole family unit. Healing and health in this country is hospitals, doctors and medicine. It’s often hard to find my place in this community of death. Many times my own people are skeptical of the gift and the colonizer has a monopoly. It can be discouraging and we must remind ourselves who we are and what we have. No matter who accepts or receives what we have, knowing that we ARE the medicine is a truth beyond colloquialism. In the African diaspora, the heart is guided by the Sun and the orisha Oggun , and it is coruled by Oya. While Oggun, the orisha of war, may clear the path so blood can flow, Oya is the orisha of winds and change. Oya ushers in needed transitions to elevate our being and a healthy heart gives us the ability to go with these changes. A trusting heart allows us to surrender control. listen to this spiritual direction, and flow.
