Seriously I just skipped around until I saw Monkey. This is the BEST depiction of him I've ever seen in film. The way he moves! His disdain for the 4th wall! The sheer unpredictability of him, moment to moment! So good.

So I’ve been telling JttW to my tiny niece

She freaking loves it? She demands “Naughty Monkey Story” at every opportunity. She has, however, formed a few Opinions I have to work around.

-Tripitaka is now a princess. I showed Niece a picture of him from a Pinterest board I made specifically for story time with her, and he was looking very pretty in his “crown.” Niece made an executive decision.

This has proven to be an utterly seamless change.

-I turned the furnace into a magic cooking pot and tried to make the whole thing as child-friendly as possible. Was slightly croggled when she solemnly suggested they were going to eat Naughty Monkey for dinner because he had eaten their peach dinner. This kid has heard too many fairy tales. 

-Bajie is The Best And Nicest. I dare not persuade her otherwise. She was strongly taken with him being both round and pink (qualities she herself possesses). 

-I kinda overdid it on the suspense when they met Sha Wujing and she got very freaked out. She now refers to him as “the nice water man,” with careful emphasis, and I have to reassure her every time that yes, he’s nice now.

-Guanyin is her favorite. Her mum has told her that Guanyin is a kind of angel, and Niece is on board with that. Briefly disappointed with the lack of wings, entirely assuaged when I explained that she flies around on a flower instead. 

The Bajie thing aside, I gotta say Niece’s version cooks.

Okay okay so you guys know how I write Tripitaka as having an eidetic memory? He's much better at verbal than visual elements, but I'm looking at this adorable picture and how Trip clearly finds his criminals disciples adorable, and I think what he's just decided to do is to STARE at them in order to take a mental "photograph." Probably he will have to stare at them very hard without blinking for several minutes, and probably that's a little creepy...but it's fine! They're asleep! They'll never know!

(Ao Lie was secretly awake the whole time but has no idea how to ask wtf that was just now? so he just. Never asks.)

💚 What is your favorite trope you keep coming back to? 

I mean. It’s less “coming back to” and more “never left,” but Platonic Cuddling is my jam, man. First story I ever wrote, I was four years old, it was a Casper the Ghost fanfiction all in crayon, and I wrote it because I felt STRONGLY that Casper needed a hug. I wrote him being sad and then getting said hug. I have essentially been writing variations on that same story ever since, though these days not in crayon.

🩵 If your fic/art was a meal, what/how would it be? Salty? Sweet? Dinner, breakfast? Comfort food?

Ooh, my kinda question. I actually have elaborate dreams of someday opening a Literary Cafe in which I’d serve character-themed meals—like, you could come in and order a Gandalf (Reuben sandwich) or a Marianne Dashwood (strawberries & Brie on brioche) or an Edward Cullen (a slice of white bread sprinkled with edible glitter). 

The FFIM series would be comfort food for sure. Hmm…maybe like a cassoulet? It doesn’t have a ton of structure, but I think it’s pretty meaty, so yeah. Cassoulet.

Except this last installment in the series, that’s straight-up dessert. Some sort of dark chocolate mousse cake, I think. With little curls of candied orange peel. Mostly fluffy and sweet, but a bit of darker angst for flavor, and some bright acid bickering and traces of plot.

💜Have you ever lost control over your fic/art? 

Hahahahaahaaaaaaaah what me no never. *Gives Sleep Training the bombastic side-eye*

🖤 What small thing in your story could trigger a literal worst outcome? (Like, character tripping over something leads to the end of the world) 

Ooh. Bit dark, but honestly…Tripitaka is so fragile, it really would not take much to off him. He might literally trip off a fairly small cliff, and that would be that. Whereupon Sun Wukong would have to be talked down fast and hard to stop him ending the world. Pretty sure there would be some hardcore Harrowing of the Hells until Monkey got his Master back.

On a less earth-shattering note, I kinda think Sandy doesn’t have it quite as together as everyone (himself included) believes. Poor guy has Issues. Also, is kinda terrifying, when he lets himself be. I might have to ponder on how best to set him off…  😈

💔 what is your main character’s worst nightmare? (Favourite horror story)

Honestly, I think we can all guess that Sun Wukong has some pretty serious fears of abandonment/ being alone/ being trapped. This could manifest in a zillion different ways but I have Extremely Evil Plans to exploit it in an upcoming chapter, buahaha.

Listen I have like three sickeningly sweet gooey HEA chapters planned in which the pilgrims visit Mt Huaguo after their quest is done; I am not gonna spoil your appetites with details, but you can expect that they all have some Adjusting to do once their lives become peaceful and sedentary!
