Redefining education in Biden’s era
The day Joe Biden’s vote count crossed Trump’s by a tremendous margin, joy spread like wildfire all across the U.S. With former President Donald Trump’s controversial policies, mainly focused on profit-making, students and teachers had nearly lost hope in the covertly corrupt education system.
With Biden’s win, there are several queries in the minds of citizens regarding what exactly will the Biden administration be like? Likewise, students, educators, and other workers in the education sector ponder upon these questions that hover in the air: How will Biden’s Presidency affect U.S. education? Will it get better or worse?
Since President-elect Joe Biden has a strong link to education, the country is to see a better education system in all likelihood. His wife, Dr Jill Biden, is a 30-year education vet and an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College. As the President, he plans to propose a moderate policy, that primarily entails the following:
Social Service
Biden envisions an educational support system that strengthens social health services at schools and transforms them into community hubs.
Funding and Improving Teachers’ Working Conditions
He proposes to increase expenditures for schools and colleges that serve low-income students. Another major part of his policy is to improve teachers’ salaries and working conditions. He has specifically promised to triple fund K-12 schools that serve low-income students (from about $16 billion per year to $48 billion) and will require that money to initially go to teachers.
Early Education
As president, Biden promises to invest in "all children from birth." This will be established by placing early childhood development experts in every community health center and doubling the funding for home-visit programs, which connects child development experts with families in need. He will ensure that all 3- and 4-year-old children have access to preschool as well.
Secondary Education
At present, an estimated $23 billion annual funding gap exists between white school districts and school districts in communities of colour. Biden desires to bridge this gap by nearly tripling Title I funding, which goes to schools that serve a high number of low-income students.
Vocational Training
He has also stressed on the significance of vocational training and alternative educational pathways over making college free for all. His plan for post-secondary education aims to invest heavily in vocational education and provide extra support to low-income students at those schools.
With the eyes of the country upon him, Joe Biden said during his speech Saturday in Wilmington, Del: "For American educators, this is a great day for you all. You're going to have one of your own in the White House.", referring to his wife. From the overview of his intents with education, it seems that large-profit companies that dealt in corruption during Trump’s Presidency will be eventually wiped out, and education will be redefined for what it really is: giving equal opportunities of learning to everyone.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR JAM 2021?
Joint Admission Test for M.Sc (JAM) is organised by different IIT institutes every year. JAM is a national level entrance exam for admission to M.Sc, Joint M.Sc PhD, M.Sc PhD Dual Degree, and other similar programs.
IIT JAM conducts the following subjects of Pure Science – Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, Biotechnology, Economics, Biological Science, Geology, Computer Application, and Geophysics.
Here are some strategies for some subjects:
Mathematics
Divide and prepare a timetable, state your strengths and weaknesses.
Maintain a pocket diary for important formulas.
Differential Calculus, Sequence and Series, Matrices and Linear Algebra are important topics
Practice daily.
Best books:
IIT JAM Mathematics- Neha Tyagi
Fundamentals of Real Analysis- V.K. Krishnan,
Abstract Algebra- Bhattacharya, Jain, and Nagpal
Mathematical Statistics
Do not skip any topic.
Highlight the important formulas, points, statements, and theorems.
Differential Calculus, Estimation and Random Variables, Probability, Random Variables, Standard Distributions, Joint Distributions, Sampling Distributions, Limit Theorems, Estimation, Testing of Hypotheses are some of the important topics.
Solve at least 10 problems daily.
Best books:
Principle of Mathematical Analysis- Rudi
Integral Calculus- Dr Gorakh Prasad
Statistics- Murray and Spiegel
Mathematical Analysis- S.C. Malik
Chemistry
First, write down some of the important concepts in the subject, and give priority to active (most popular topics) concepts first. You can focus on passive (less popular topics) concepts later.
Maintain clear notes for last minute revision.
Organic and Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry are the most important topics. But do not forget to study the other topics as well.
Best books:
Physical Chemistry- Peter Atkins and Julio De Paula,
Surface Chemistry- A.Goel
Introduction to Surface Chemistry and Catalysis- Gabor A. Somor
Biotechnology
List down active and passive topics.
Focus on subjects like Biology, Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry. Among all subjects, 44% of weightage is given to Biology followed by 18% for Physics, 18% for Mathematics and 20% for Chemistry.
Give major emphasis to Biology subjects.
Biology and Chemistry questions in the IIT JAM Biotechnology exam are based on Class 10, 12, and UG levels. On the other hand, the Mathematics and Physics syllabus is completely based on the 10+2 level.
In Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the major focus should be given to learning the concepts. Do not try to memorise forcefully. Mechanics from Physics, Coordinate Geometry from Mathematics and Organic Chemistry from Chemistry are some other important factors.
Best books:
BioInformatics-Mount David W
Microbiology- Michael Pelczar Jr.
Molecular Cloning- Sambrook and Russel
Basic Immunology- Abbas and Littmann
Geology
Make short notes on each sub-topic.
Petrology, Economic Geology, Structural Geology, Mineralogy, and Applied Geology are some important topics.
Best books:
Groundwater- H.M Raghunath
Hydrogeology- Todd and Karanth
Structure Geology- Prof. Haakon Fasten
A Remote Sensing Geology- R.P Gupta
Optical Mineralogy- P.K Verma
Physics
List down all the formulas.
Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory, Mechanics, General Property Matter, Electricity and Magnetism are some important topics.
Practice daily.
Best books:
Thermodynamics- Zemanski Dittman, Saha Srivastava/ F.W. Sears, and G.L. Salinger
Molecular and Atomic Physics- Rajkumar/ White Classical Mechanics- Herbert Goldstein
GENERAL TIPS
You must know the syllabus well.
Start your preparation early.
Consult your seniors who have cleared JAM.
Buy relevant JAM books.
Refer to previous/sample years question banks.
Take mock tests, time to time.
During the preparation, you should eat and sleep well. Your physical as well as your mental health will add on to your effective learning.
As a JAM candidate, you must dedicate your time well to the preparation and maintain a balance between your social life and personal.
All the best!
