Anyways I saw the eltingville pilot and thought 'oh Pete looks cute I'm gonna read this' and then HOLY SHIT this was NOT what I expected..

okay brain dump thread about this comic that made me question everything about nerd culture and also my entire roblox childhood growing up in a male-dominated space as a thirteen years old Japanese girl and how the Eltingville connects to nerd culture TODAY!!

like I genuinely needed to take a shower after reading it. these comic book store guys were SO toxic - taking photos of girls who entered the store, rating girls' appearances at cons, just... ugh.

but here's the thing that's actually insane: this comic from the 90s perfectly captured the energy I experienced as the only girl in an Japanese Roblox community back when roblox was way more underground.

and just like eltingville, there were all these comments I learned to tune out - the "female jokes," the weird looks thing, all that fun stuff. I stuck around because it was the only community for that game genre and I made some friends (plus I was like barely a teen so..)

the craziest part? I got comments like "women can get easy money by sueing guys on false assault charges" and "don't you know women have special privileges in this world?" - literally the same energy as these american comic guys from decades earlier. toxic nerd behavior is apparently universal and timeless!! a 90s comic about comic book gatekeeping perfectly predicted Asian roblox toxicity. we love to see it

anyways the art was really cool especially the panel where he sets the comic store on fire. 10/10 would recommend for the existential crisis about nerd culture!!!

p.s also Pete goes bald in the epilogue which is honestly the perfect ending for a toxic nerd story
