And she’s right. It’s a parallel I hadn’t noticed. You can’t not pay attention to LWJ raising WWX’s child while he’s dead. But Song Lan doesn’t just take the shattered fragments of his partner’s soul. He’s given (as if it’s the most natural thing to do) the shattered fragments of his partner’s kid’s soul too. And his stated goal is to safeguard both of them, take care of both of them, figure out a way to repair both of them get both of them back. He doesn’t have any promise he’s getting either of them; but he takes them both. He knew A-Qing for like 4 minutes before death, but that’s his kid now too.

岁寒三友 // Three Friends of Winter

In classical Chinese art and literature, the Three Friends of Winter refer to the trio of pine, bamboo, and plum. All three plants are celebrated for their tenacity and vitality even through the harshness of winter. Together, they symbolize the ideals of hope, determination, strength, and endurance in the face of adversity.

梅 // Plum: Resilience

The plum blooms in late winter, at a time when the rest of the world shows little sign of life or color. The first flower of spring, the plum blossom not only survives but blooms fearlessly and beautifully in the dead of winter, heralding the return of warmer, gentler days.

The chengyu 傲雪凌霜 àoxuě língshuāng (variously translated as “distant snow and bitter frost,” “gentry despite the frost,” “standing proudly despite the snow”) evokes the imagery of plum blossoms amid snow and can describe a person who is remarkably resilient, weathering the hardships of life with dignity and courage and coming out strong on the other side.

Wait what? Is that confirmed or just rumours? How is Wei Ying supposed to reunite with Wen Qing at the end if she's dead?

It's a little complicated. I'll dump some info so just make of it what you will

In one of the earliest interviews before the show started filming, Meng Ziyi (Wen Qing's actress) said that her character had an "open ending" in the show.

During filming, the ending was leaked: WangXian separated at the end and WWX travelled to look for Wen Qing.

It's actually the exact same as the ending as in the aired version except for a change in one of WWX's lines:

Aired version: 不过天大地大，一酒一骑走天涯，四海为家嘛。"I will wander the world with my drink and my mount. The world is vast, I will make it my home,"

Original version: 没想好，一酒一骑走天涯，天大地大，四海为家嘛。可能去找找温情吧，说不定，她没死呢。"I haven't thought about it. I will wander the world with my drink and my mount. The world is vast, I will make it my home. Perhaps I'll go looking for Wen Qing. Maybe she still lives,"

The voice at the end of the original script said "Wei Wuxian!" while in the aired version the voice said "Wei Ying," (although it's not specified in thr script who the voice belongs to, it's worth considering that in the show, Wen Qing only calls him Wei Wuxian while Lan Wangji consistently calls him Wei Ying)

In an earlier version of the leak, the script specifically said the voice belonged to Wen Qing.

Overall this lines up with Meng Ziyi's initial statement about her character having an "open ending".

How did Wen Qing survive?

Part of the script from episode 43 was leaked. In this scene, Lan Xichen and WWX were talking in front of the Jingshi, and he was telling WWX how LWJ got the scars on his back.

Here Lan Xichen is telling WWX that LWJ broke into Jinlintai (where Wen Qing was being held captive) and fought numerous Lan and Jin cultivators in order to rescue her. Based on the script, the rescue scene was supposed to be before this one:

I guess this also explains why the pacing in this part is a little choppy. First, Lan Xichen says that Wen Qing went to Jinlintai for punishment, then it skips directly to LWJ's confronation with Su She in the aftermath of WWX's death without addressing what happened to Wen Qing at all. It also makes sense why viewers who have not read the novel assumed that Wen Qing was alive, because unlike all the other dead characters in the show, her death was never actually confirmed.

Also in the golden core reveal, Jiang Cheng actually brings her up. He says here that he thinks Wen Qing also survived along with Wen Ning and accuses WWX of knowing where she is and hiding her from him. WWX insists he hasn't seen her either. (Deleted from the final cut)

So was WWX and Wen Qing meant to be the actual couple in the show?

Hard to say because the show keeps it super vague, especially on WWX's end.

There is a (deleted) scene where Wang Lingjiao basically confirms that Wen Qing has romantic feelings for WWX, but it's never explicitly shown whether WWX reciprocates it or not. It's only really implied in the same way WangXian's bromance is implied, so it's all open to interpretation and can differ from viewer to viewer.

So even in the original ending, Wen Qing does not actually end up with WWX. At least not explicitly. They only reunited and the show ends with him turning around to see her with a relieved smile on his face. After that, the audience is free to interpet that however they want. There's no real correct answer, hence Meng Ziyi's statement that her character has an open ending. When it comes to the validity of interpretation, BL fans have a leg up because the original novel is BL, but if we're looking at the show only, it would be unfair to dismiss the people who think that Wen Qing and WWX could have been a potential couple, since even in the final version their relationship had this tension to it and was hinted at with vague allusions in the same way WangXian's was.

And I think that's sort of the purpose? To keep the bromance vague enough for the mainstream viewers and censorship, while also keeping the heterosexual romance vague enough to not completely alienate BL fans.

Genuinely believe that the biggest and most heart-wrenching immediate twist from those first two 16-years-later to the flashback episodes start is Jiang Cheng’s character/personality

Jiang Cheng when you first meet him in the future is a stern and serious man who does not smile or seem to willingly speak to Lan Wanji, who would lightning whip a stranger who he suspects is possessed by Wei Wuxian, this great and terrible villain

Jiang Cheng in the past is immediately a sometimes serious but frequently silly boy, who excitedly follows his big brother Wei Wuxian around everywhere and copies what he does and clearly loves him so much

​the knowledge that something is going to happen to shatter that idol worship style big brother love is immediately obvious and hangs over the show sword of Damocles style

In the teen nielan au I started writing but will probably never publish, there's a scene where nmj, lxc, and lwj are on a boat just trying to have fun

Meaning nmj is trying to win lxc's favor by being nice to his little brother, and he thinks a 10-year-old would love a little boat ride (and lwj, despite his stoic little face, does really enjoy it). Lxc is so excited his little brother is getting so many chances to get out of Cloud Recesses and explore!

But there's a tiny water monster that hits their boat and lwj, leaning over the side to get a good look at what's hitting them, topples over.

Nmj doesn't even hesitate to jump in and grab lwj and stab the puny monster that can only take on a 10-year-old. He gets lwj back on the boat and when they get back to shore, carries him to Cloud Recesses.

He hands him over to lqr, shivering and a little bloody where the monster tried biting him. Lxc takes nmj back to his room and asks servants to bring hot water and fresh clothes so nmj can wash up and keep warm.

And when they're alone, lxc gets up on his tiptoes and kisses nmj on the cheek, thanking him for saving his brother.

Nmj insists it was nothing. The bunnies around Cloud Recesses are more ferocious than the little snake. He's blushing furiously the whole time, though.

He didn't jump in after lwj to impress lxc. He's just really grown to care for lwj for real, and he didn't even think before diving into the water. He just saw a little boy, no older than nhs, and went in after him.

The next morning they visit lwj. Lxc comments on how his hair is a mess--tangled from sleeping on it wet after the healers bathed him. And nmj has lwj sit in front him and puts his hair into two Nie braids.

"You don't get anything special or intricate until you're in battle or on night hunts. Those are called Victory Braids. But you can wear these. These are just ordinary Nie braids. They'll keep your hair tidy while you sleep."

The braids start all the way at the top of his head, taking in all the hair until they hang down his back like twins. Lxc clasps his hands together.

"A-Zhan, you look like you could be in the Nie Clan!"

Lwj feels the braids and though he doesn't outwardly smile, nmj can see a little light in his eyes.
