3AM (Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw
Tumblr media
A/N: Well, here goes nothing. Here’s to hopefully many new one-shots and stories to be told! I’m so excited about this and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it! Please let me know what you think and if you have any requests, hit up my inbox! - C
So much for “this won’t affect the mission”. You thought this to yourself as your F-18 came to a complete stop. You quickly fumbled to unbuckled yourself and popped the canopy. You climbed out and hit the ground and let out a frustrated growl as you glanced over at Rooster’s plane. He was climbing out as well, just as frustrated as you. It had been a disaster, from the moment Maverick said “Go” to the moment you both got “shot down”. “What the hell was that, Marks?! You didn’t listen to a word I said up there!”
The first thing you noticed, apart from Rooster completely blaming you, was that he’d used your last name instead of your call sign. He knew it annoyed you just as much to be called out by your actual name than your call sign as it annoyed him. You yanked your helmet off and began to stomp towards the open bay. “Oh, bite me, Bradshaw!”
When you made it back to the bay you aggressively tossed your helmet into a nearby chair. Bob jumped a little at the impact and Phoenix was studying you carefully chewing on her thumb nail. “What happened up there? It sounded like chaos on the radio, and Mav got you both within the first ten minutes?”
She stared at you waiting for your response but as you opened your mouth to make a remark on Rooster being an asshole the door slammed open. Rooster was standing in the doorway, beads of sweat rolling down his forehead. He scanned the room for you and opened his mouth to begin the fight when Maverick shoved past him. “Well, on that note, training is done for the day. Marks and Bradshaw, my office. Now.”
You growled a little under your breath as Mav exits the room and blow a stray strand of hair out of your face. Hangman was smirking your way and you grimaced at him before turning to leave. Rooster was still rooted in the door as you made your way over, shoving past him heading to Maverick’s office. This ought to be fun.
When you were both sat across from Maverick’s desk, he studied both of your faces before letting out a deep exhale. “Listen, I’m not going to pretend that I know what’s going on between the two of you. And quite frankly, I don’t care. Today’s dogfight was one example of quite a few in the past two weeks where you two have caused trouble for each other. When you both first arrived, I was excited to have you be a part of the team. But the past two weeks?” He let out a sarcastic laugh.
“You showed up more a team than everyone combined. And I’m not sure where and when that changed but it’s an issue. You two were so focused on fighting each other up there you didn’t stand a damn chance against me. And you’re both better than that!” He slammed his fist against the desk at the last word and it jolted your attention from your entangled hands in your laugh back to Mav. Out of the corner of your eye you could see that Rooster’s jaw as set in a rigid line and his fists were balled up.
“I shouldn’t have to stress the importance of this upcoming mission to either of you. Nor should I have to warn you of this, but I will. You both know that focus is everything when you’re up there, especially against an enemy with more advanced tactics and equipment. If you lose focus up there on this mission, you. Will. Die. Do you both understand that?”
After a beat of silence, you realized he was waiting for an answer. While Rooster shook his head yes you muttered a quick, “Yes sir.” After another beat of uncomfortable silence where Maverick took turns staring you both down, he let out another sigh of frustration.
“Good. Whatever is going on between the two of you, keep it out of the skies. I mean it. From now on you both show up for training a team, and if you’re not capable of that let me know and I’ll happily ground you both for someone who can. Understood?” You both nodded, jaws tight and anger at all-time high. Mav let another beat of silence fill the office before standing. “You’re both dismissed. Hit the showers and come back focused.
You both stood up and left the office. Once outside and the door firmly shut behind you Rooster glanced at you before muttering “bye” and heading the opposite way of the locker room. You gritted your teeth but headed for the locker room. Once inside you grabbed your change of clothes from your locker and headed for the showers. Happy to see no one else in the showers you stripped out of your sweaty flight suit and climbed into the steaming hot shower stream.
As you scrubbed every inch of sweat off your body and washed your hair you reflected on today. You and Rooster had met in your class at Top Gun. What started as a flirtation quickly turned into something more. You’d spent the past year or so keeping in contact, visiting each other, and messing around. Maverick was right, you’d arrived to this mission a team. But then the tensions built. This impossible mission, the high stakes, the competition, and Rooster’s anger towards Maverick had gotten in the way of a good thing.
It all came to a head two weeks ago when you got into an explosive fight at your house, and he’d stormed out. You’d barely spoken since, definitely not spoken outside of training. You shut the water off and wrapped a towel around yourself tightly. You heard voices in the locker room as you pushed the door open. Phoenix, Hangman, and Coyote milled around leaning against the lockers.
“You coming, Mayhem?” Hangman smiled flirtatiously at you as you dropped your clothes on the bench and opened your locker. You grabbed your deodorant and applied it before tossing it back in and turning around to face them.
“Coming to what, exactly?” Hangman opened his mouth to answer but Phoenix was already interjecting before he could speak.
“Bagman and Coyote are throwing a party at their place tonight. Kind of a last hurrah type thing.” You nodded slightly and opened your mouth, but she quickly piped up again turning her attention to the boys. “And yes, she’s coming. I’m picking her up at 8 and we’ll head over.”
You scowled at her, but she threw you a look that kept your mouth shut. Hangman grinned victoriously and shared a high five with Coyote. “That’s excellent.” He grabbed his jacket and slid his arms in looking back to you. “I was beginning to wonder if you had time for anyone other than Rooster, Mayhem. Good to see those boring days are behind us.” You threw him a sarcastic smile and flipped him the bird as they exited the locker room shouting that they’d see you guys later.
When the door had closed all the way you groaned dramatically and turned to Phoenix. “I’m so not in the mood to go to douchebag’s party tonight. Can’t we just skip and get drunk at my place?” You dropped your towel and clipped on your bra and stepping into a fresh thong as Phoenix rolled her eyes at your dramatic tone.
“You not being in the mood is exactly why you’re going. Come on, it’ll be fun! I mean who knows how this mission is gonna go, this might be our last chance to party together! You’ve been isolating and sad for two weeks now. It’s time to get out and have some fun before D-Day!”
You stared at her skeptically, debating whether it was even a good idea. The thought had crossed your mind that partying with Rooster after today might be a tad bit awkward. But seeing the concern flash through your eyes Phoenix stood up as you pulled on a pair of jean shorts and patted your bare shoulder. “He won’t be there. He told Bob earlier he had plans already.”
You chewed on your lower lip as you pulled on a V-neck and tucked your dog tags in your shirt. “Fine. But when I get too drunk out of sheer boredom and depression tonight, you’re not allowed to complain once about it!” Phoenix triumphantly clapped her hands together and held up her pinky to you.
You wrapped yours around it and squeezed. “I promise I won’t! And, I promise you’ll have a great time tonight! It’ll get you out of the house and I mean, he is a douchebag, but Hangman does know how to throw a pretty epic party.” You let out a chuckle and started to brush through your hair. “I’ll pick you up at 8, I’ll pick up the alcohol!” She blew you a kiss before exiting the locker room.
After brushing your hair and grabbing your duffle you retreated home. You cracked a beer the second you entered your house and cranked up the music. You glanced at the clock and realized it was already seven and Phoenix was supposed to pick you up at eight. Groaning you chugged half the beer and went to your room. You perused your closet for a while before selecting a simple olive-colored dress with straps. You then leaned over and plucked up a pair of black flats and roamed back into your room.
Quickly you tugged out of your clothes and tugged the dress on. You slipped the flats on and examined the outfit in the mirror. The dress was simple, sinched at the waist to show off your figure and just tight enough to show off your full figure. You adjusted your boobs a little and tilted your head. Not half bad.
Next you rushed to the bathroom realizing you had less than thirty minutes left. You spent a good fifteen blow-drying your blonde curls and then moved on to make up. You kept it mostly simple with foundation, a gold-based eye shadow, some mascara and a cute gloss. You were messing with your hair when you heard the front door open. “Are you decent?!” Phoenix shouted as she padded through the living room down the hall.
You let you a laugh and finished off the last of your third beer. “Yes!” She walked in the room and began complimenting your outfit. You returned the compliments to her outfit, as she’d kept it simple as well with a pair of skinny jeans, a tight top, and a cute jacket. You grabbed your phone off the charger and then your bag before turning to her. “Ready?” She nodded enthusiastically and you guys headed out.
She spent half the ride trying to pump you up while also scolding you for pregaming with beer. Beer before liquor, never sicker. You rolled your eyes at her often and sticking your tongue out at her as you pulled up to Hangman and Coyote’s shared bachelor pad. You couldn’t help but scan the driveway of parked cars for the all-too-familiar blue Bronco. Once you were sure it wasn’t there you walked behind Phoenix into the house.
The music could be heard from the driveway and got so much louder as soon as the door was opened. You both walked in to excited hollers from your fellow squad mates. As soon as you both found your way into the dining room where the table had been overtaken by alcohol bottles and a large bowl filled with ice and a variety of beer Phoenix put the bag in her hand down. She sifted through it before pulling out three different bottles. “Rum, for you. Whiskey, for me. Aaaaaand…..TEQUILA for when we feel frisky later.”
You burst out laughing because she knew you a little too well. Rum and tequila were your go-to drinks but trouble usually followed the tequila. You grabbed the rum from her hand and winked before cracking open the top. She’d chosen Coconut Cruzan and it smelled scrumptious. As you went to tilt the bottle back for a taste someone’s hand slid around your waist. You stiffened momentarily, before realizing that it was Hangman. “Well, well, well. Look who actually showed up. Ladies, always a pleasure to see you, but you Mayhem, I’ve been looking for.”
Phoenix was chuckling at your obvious distaste for Hangman’s obvious flirting. You tipped the bottle back and took a hefty taste of rum before shuddering slightly at the burn at the back of your throat. “Well, Hangman. I’d much rather be at home but seeing as Phoenix wasn’t taking no for an answer, here I am! Now, do you have any mixers or am I drinking this straight all night?”
He licked at his lips suggestively as you turned your attention back to him. “I mean, I think it’d be more fun if you just kept chugging straight liquor, but I have lemonade and a few soda options if you’d prefer to kill the fun.” He winked at you and Phoenix covered her laughter with fake coughing before exiting the room, probably to look for Bob. You reached over and grabbed a red solo cup and Hangman so graciously filled your cup with ice. You poured some rum into the bottom, assessed, and added more for good measure before adding some lemonade and taking a sip. The instant burn in your throat let you know you’d poured a little too heavily, but Hangman seemed pleased with himself.
By your third drink you could definitely feel the alcohol coursing through your veins. You internally thanked the heavens that it was your off day from training tomorrow. You plopped drunkenly on the sofa and pulled your phone out hastily. You huffed when you realized you didn’t have any notifications. You chewed on the inside of your cheek and drunkenly debated what to do next. You could see Hangman and Coyote talking across the room and they kept glancing your way.
Glancing back down at your phone you smiled a little and opened your messages. You squinted against the alcohol and clicked on his name. You hesitated, wondering why this always happens every time you get a little alcohol in your system before shrugging it off. You inhaled a deep breath before typing and sending the message.
Why aren’t you here?
You took a large chug of the last of your mixed drink as you watched the screen. The read receipt popped up and the text bubbles popped up for a minute before disappearing. This happened a few times before they disappeared altogether. You gritted your teeth a little and viciously typed another message.
I know you saw my text. Are you not going to talk to me?
Yet again the text bubbles popped up and disappeared. Your blood was practically boiling, and you went to send another message when the couch bowed under the weight of someone sitting right next to you. You glanced up and blinked as a red solo cup was thrust into your face. “Hey gorgeous, couldn’t help but notice your drink was empty! I took the liberty as a gentleman of grabbing you another one. Rum and lemonade, right?”
You eyed the drink and then Hangman’s devious smile before slowly taking it from him. “Yeah…thanks…” It crossed your mind that it could be spiked but you knew he wouldn’t be so bold with everyone around. Especially with the mission a few weeks away. You smiled a little and took a drink before shuddering. When he said rum and lemonade, he’d meant to say 85% rum and 15% lemonade at best.
But at this point you welcomed the distraction. You took another heavy sip before focusing on Hangman. “Listen, I hope you don’t mind me saying this, but….” He glanced around him before looking into your eyes. “Bradshaw never really suited you very well. You deserve to be with someone….better suited for you.” He eyed your cleavage as you took another sip of your drink and as he moved his hand to rest gently on your knee it dawned on you.
Hangman, while easily the sluttiest guy you’d ever met, could serve his purposes. I mean, Rooster was ignoring you and you were single after all. Who said you had to be so lonely and depressed when you could have a nice little distraction. And God knew it wouldn’t be anything more to Hangman than casual sex at best. At that moment, it was decided. You tipped the cup back and quickly chugged half the drink he’d handed you before settling back into the couch, leaning a little closer to Hangman.
He puffed his chest out a little, obviously proud to see his advances were working as you smiled up at him. You then had another thought, and you licked your lips seductively before pulling your phone out again. “One sec….” You tapped open the messages app again and quickly typed your message.
Fine. Don’t respond. Hangman will keep me company instead.
After ensuring the text went through you turned your phone off and tossed it in front of you on the table. The thunk of it hitting the glass table caught Phoenix and Bob’s attention and both seemed confused as you leaned back more heavily into Hangman. “You know what?” You slurred in Hangman’s direction looking up at him through your lashes. “You’re right. I should find someone more…..” you leaned forward a little bit to leave less than an inch between the two of you. “Suited to me.”
For the next few hours, you flirted heavily with Hangman who continued to feed you mixed drinks that tasted better each time. Much to your drunken dismay, Hangman wasn’t half bad company. It was easy to talk to him and he was a great ego boost. He spent half the time complimenting you and the other half staring intently at you as you babbled on. You noticed as the night went on, he got bolder, and his hand inched further up your leg. You finished the last of your drink, already unsure of how many you’d had tonight.
You couldn’t help but noticed that Phoenix had spent a great deal of time watching you closely, eyebrows knit together. She often whispered something to Bob who seemed just as concerned. But you’d warned her. She wasn’t allowed to complain about you getting drunk and having a good time. Especially since she’d dragged you here.
Hangman leaned into your ear to whisper something but at that exact moment the speakers started blaring a familiar song. You audibly gasped with excitement and jumped to your feet. “Oh I LOVE this song!” Low by Flo Rida played loudly and after your outburst Coyote laughed and cranked the speakers even louder. You yanked Hangman off the couch and began dancing. What started out as moderately innocent quickly turned into you two grinding together A few others danced too but as his hands snaked around your waist and his face buried into your neck you got a little lost. This was the perfect distraction.
You two danced a few songs together, mostly grinding and laughing. You turned around and Hangman’s arms stayed around your waist. You smiled up at him drunkenly and he leaned down right beside your ear. “Wanna go upstairs?”
You giggled a little as he smiled down at you and you realized you recognized the look in his eyes. It was desire. And that’s a look you hadn’t seen in weeks. You bit your lower lip a little and took a deep inhale in before nodding. “Yes, please.”
He grinned down at you before dropping his arms and latching onto your hand. You squeezed it as he turned away and winked at Coyote before starting to lead you out of the room. At the sight of you leaving Phoenix and Bob jumped to their feet and walked over. “Savannah…..where are you going?”
You turned a little and giggled drunkenly, walking backwards as Hangman continued to tug you towards the stairs. “Upstairs, duh. I’ll stay here tonight, and Jake will drive me home tomorrow.”
Phoenix took a few steps forward and Bob kept glancing around nervously as if something were about to happen. “Jake? You’re calling him Jake now? You couldn’t stand him five hours ago.” Hangman chuckled behind her and tugged gently at your arm as you stumbled a little.
“Yeah, well, he grows on you! I’m fine! I’m a big girl, I can take care of myself.” You winked at her and turned back around to follow quickly but the slam of the front door caught everyone’s attention. You glanced around Hangman who’d halted to a stop and your eyes narrowed.
Standing in the doorway in a pair of tight jeans, a grey t-shirt, and one of his famous stupid Hawaiian print shirts pulled over was none other than Rooster. He scanned the room quickly before spotting you by the stairs, hand-in-hand with Hangman. He tensed up immediately before quickly closing the distance between you two. “Sav. What are you doing?”
You growled and stepped closer to him tightening your grip on Hangman’s hand. “I don’t see how that’s any of your business. What are you doing here anyway? Phoenix said you had plans.” It stung a little to say as the thought that maybe his plans were a date flashed through your head, but you shook it off quickly.
Rooster kept eyeing Hangman as he smirked on to the scene, probably just happy to get more under Rooster’s skin. “Bob said you might need a ride home. Phoenix is too drunk to drive….” Bob? You whirled around, almost losing your balance, to shoot both of them a dirty look. Bob shrunk under your death stare, but Phoenix shrugged a little unafraid of your wrath.
“Yeah, well, Bob was wrong. I’m staying here…..” At this Hangman’s smirk widened and he pulled you an inch closer to him.
Rooster let out a guttural growl and pointed at Hangman. “Over my cold, dead body are you staying the night here.” He turned his hazel eyes to you quickly and you could see the tension all over his face. “This ends one of two ways, Sav. You either let me drive you home willingly, or I carry you over my shoulder kicking and screaming and I take you home. Either way, you’re going home. And as for you,” He stops to turn his gaze to Hangman. “I’d hate to fuck up your face so badly you can’t see to fly an F-18 tomorrow for training. Your choice.”
Hangman seemed ready to accept the challenge, but you realized you weren’t winning this. You’d seen that look in Bradley’s eyes a few times, and he wasn’t going to give up till he got his way. You waited a beat longer before dropping Hangman’s hand and stepping forward. How far would he push this? “You. Wouldn’t. Dare.” You wobbled a little as the room spinned slightly, but you immediately saw the dark take over his eyes.
“Fine. But I warned you.” You smirked; almost certain you’d won. But he closed the distance between you with two large steps and pulled you closer. You let out a gasp as he bent down and threw you over his shoulder. Always the gentleman he quickly positioned his hand over your back, so your dress stayed against you, protecting the view of everything there was to show. You screamed in frustration as he whirled around and headed for the door.
Hangman stepped forward for a brief second before coming face to face with Bradley. His voice dipped down to a deathly level as he hissed at Hangman. “You have five seconds to move before I put her down and drop your ass, Hangman. I swear to God I’m not playing with you tonight.” Hangman wavered but stepped out of his way. Phoenix hurried over and handed Rooster your phone before stepping back to let him leave.
The entire way to the Bronco you beat on Rooster’s back and screamed his entire name, demanding to be put down. When he made it to the car, he yanked your door open and gently put you down, making sure your dress remained in place. “Calm down. Just…..get in….please.” He stared into your eyes and as you caught your breath from shouting you realized you weren’t going to win this.
Huffing dramatically, you fumbled into the car, damn near falling out but he caught you and helped you back into your seat. You clicked your seatbelt in place as he closed your door and made his way around the Bronco. He climbs in, turns the engine over and you’re off.
At first the ride is mostly quiet, apart from your pouting and the sound of the radio turned way down. You glance over at Rooster multiple times, but he keeps his eyes straight ahead, jaw locked in place. You roll the window down and let the cool breeze of the night sober you up a little as you gulp in the air. “What the hell were you thinking tonight?” You stiffened as his voice drips with anger, and you look over at him, still leaning against the door.
“What do you mean? I was having a good time. Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do at a party?” You can see his hand tighten on the steering wheel as he glances over at you. You stare him down and he growls.
“Hangman? Seriously? Of all people, Hangman? I mean, Jesus, Savannah. Bob said you were drunk, but I didn’t peg you for sloppy.”
You let out a small gasp as he said this, and you let out a loud half-laugh. “What the hell do you care, Bradley? I’m not your problem anymore, remember?! We broke up weeks ago and you’ve ignored me ever since!”
He yanked the wheel to the right and pulled into your driveway with a slight spray of gravel underneath the tires. He slammed it into park and turned to you fully. “How could we have broken up? We were never reallytogether, weren’t those your words to me? You can’t break up if you weren’t ever really together.”
You stare him down, tears welling up quickly in your eyes. You shake your head and exhale abruptly. “Go to hell, Bradshaw.” You slam your entire body weight against the door shoving it open. You hit the ground in a flurry, slamming the car door behind you as hard as you can. You fumble to hold your phone and keys as you stumble the best you can to the door.
All you can think about is getting inside, crying in private, and going to bed to forget this horrible night ever happened. When you get to the front door and realize you’ve locked it you fumble heavily with the keys. You go to press the key into the lock when the keys fall from your hands. You let out an exasperated yell and go to lean over and reach for them when you’re met with the sight of Rooster. He’s already dipped down and grabbed them.
He stands erect again and looks at you. “Please let me at least get you into the house. I’ll leave after that. I just wanna know you’re safe inside.” You open your mouth to tell him off again, but his eyes plead with you. You hesitate for a second before a wave of nausea hits you. You nod, clamping your mouth shut.
He skillfully reaches over and unlocks the door for you. When he opens the door for you and ushers you inside you realize spit is coming up your throat. Uhh ohh. You push past him gently and take off stumbling for the bathroom. You just barely make it before vomit rushes up your throat. You’re struggling to keep your head up, hair back, and breathe while you vomit violently into your toilet.
You’re thankful when you feel a set of calloused hands reach around you and grab your hair out of your face. He holds your hair back as your body rejects every bit of alcohol in your system. He rubs your back in a circular pattern as you sweat and wish you were alone because you’ll be embarrassed tomorrow even if this is a scene, he’s seen a few times before.
You stumble back a little, landing on your butt and look up at him pathetically. “I’m sorry.” His lips are set in a thin line, but he shrugs. He stands up after tucking your hand behind your ears. He walks to your cabinet and snatches up a washcloth before running it under cold water. In a swift motion he’s back in front of you, dabbing sweat and God knows what else off your face with the cool washcloth.
You moan weakly as the room begins to spin around you. “I’m dizzy.” You go to stand but fumble and hit the ground again. “Ow.” You look down and realize there’s speckles of vomit on the front of your dress. “Ew.” Despite himself he chuckles and stands up before leaning down and gracefully picking you up bridal style. He carries you back into your bedroom as your head lulls against his chest. “God….you smell amazing. I probably smell so bad….” You glance up and notice he’s smiling and shaking his head.
He gently sets you down on your feet and steadies you as you waver. “Let’s get you ready for bed….” He reaches down to take your dress off as he’s done a hundred times, but he hesitates and glances back up at you. You realize that he’s waiting for your permission now that you’re not together, or whatever you were. You smile gently and nod.
He grabs the hem of the bottom of your dress and skillfully pulls it up over your head. With the motion you lose balance and fall back but end up plopping down on your bed. You erupt in a burst of giggles at your luck and glance up at him. “I fell.”
Yet again, his tense face breaks into a smile, and he turns around. He opens one of your dresser drawers and begins sifting through it, trying to find a shirt to put on you. You watch him for a second and before you can think straight the words tumble out of your mouth quietly. “I used to just wear your shirt to bed….”
You watch him stiffen a little before he slowly turns back to you, shutting the drawer behind him. Your eyes begin to well up again at the thought. If you had known the last time you were going to curl up next to him in bed wearing his shirt to bed would be the last time, you would have savored it more. Instinctually, seeing your tears, he takes a quick step forward. As he does, he sheds the Hawaiian shirt off and quickly pulls his t-shirt over his head. He steps forward and gets down on your level.
A stray tear rolls down your cheek but is quickly met with Bradley’s thumb wiping it away. You look up at him, bare-chested in front of you. He shyly holds up his grey t-shirt to you and you almost grab it immediately, but you stop yourself. It’s not yours to take anymore. You bite the inside of your cheek and shake your head at him. But as his hand lingers on your cheek, he wipes away another tear and shakes the shirt a little. “Take it. I want you to have it tonight.”
Your eyes connect for another moment before you reach up and gently take it from him. After a second and an unsuccessful attempt to pull it over your head he chuckles and helps you into it. He wipes another stray tear, his hand again lingering on your cheek and this time you put your hand over his. You grasp it tightly, like a lifeline.
As you sit there, staring into each other’s eyes, it washes over you completely how much you’ve missed him. He wasn’t just your boyfriend; he was your absolute best friend. And now it all feels broken and lost. This closeness feels almost normal until he clears his throat and looks down. “It’s almost four…. I have training tomorrow. I should leave.” Those last three words break you internally, but you suck in a deep breath and nod. He helps you climb into bed fully and he tucks the covers around you. As he’s bent over, turning off your bedside table, as if out of instinct he leans back over and plants the sweetest kiss on your forehead.
You close your eyes tightly and realize it’s now or never. Your eyes snap open as you sense him standing up again and he turns to leave. You sit up quickly and reach out and grasp his hand. “Bradley?” He turns back around and looks down at you, tears welling up in your eyes once again. “Stay? Please?” You can see him debating, knowing just like you that this is a bad idea. That it’ll just hurt more tomorrow. He opens his mouth but before he can turn you down you lower your voice. Your voice cracks as you plead out the last bit. “Just tonight. One more time.”
Without hesitation he nods. He squeezes your hand once before letting it go. He unbuttons his jeans and pulls them off before climbing into bed with you. Just like always you curl up next to him, your head on his chest and his arms around you. For a while it’s quiet and you savor every second. You listen to his heartbeat under your ear and as you start to sober up you realize this is it. The last time this will ever happen. You pull your head up to look at him as he stares up at the ceiling. When he feels your eyes on him, he looks down at you. “Rooster?” He raises an eyebrow at you and hums a yeah. “Do you hate me?”
You wait a millisecond before he’s shaking his head at you. “I could never hate you. Ever.” You nod, happy but somehow sad at his answer. You have a million other questions, but you don’t want to spoil this moment. You settle back into his chest and begin to drift to sleep to the soft feeling of him stroking your back.
The harsh morning light combined with the sound of an engine starting jolts you out of a dead sleep. You gasp and sit up before grasping your head and groaning. Jesus Christ, what happened last night? It comes back in bits and pieces as you reach across the bed and realize it’s empty. You glance over and the sudden spike to your heart as you realize he’s gone hits you like a ton of bricks. You sit in silence for a few moments before inhaling deeply. You roll to climb out of bed when you see your nightstand.
Sitting there waiting for you is a glass of water, glass of orange juice, and a bottle of pain killers for you. The glasses have a small note before them that states, “Drink me.” And the pain killers a note that says, “Eat me.” It makes you smile as you see a third note sitting there. You grab it anxiously and read it aloud.
“I didn’t want to wake you up. I have to get to training. Take care of yourself. -B”
Everything seemed perfect until that last sentence. Take care of yourself? It almost seemed like a goodbye. You shuddered a little before putting the note back on your table. You grabbed the water and pain killers and quickly swallowed most of the glass and a few pills to dull the absolute crushing headache. Once finished with the water you down the orange juice and realize that it’s only 8 AM. No wonder you’re so exhausted, you’ve only been asleep a few hours.
You realize you aren’t getting back to sleep, so you slide your legs out from under the covers and stand up. Almost losing your balance as you realize you’re so hungover you might still be a little drunk. You meander to the bathroom, shedding clothes to the floor and stepping into your shower. You turn the shower as hot as it will go and wash away most of last night from your skin. When you step out the entire bathroom is steamy, and you wrap a towel around you.
From the other room you hear your phone ring out. You wonder who could be reaching out this early as you pad around your bed to grab it. Pulling it off the charger and pulling it up to see you foolishly hope it’s Rooster reaching out. But you immediately see Maverick’s name. You click the message, and a cold feeling sinks through you.
Urgent meeting. Briefing room @ 0930. Attendance is mandatory. See you there.
You go to exit the message and check the time when your phone rings in your hand. Phoenix name and photo shoots across your screen and you smile slightly before answering. “I’m awake. What’s this meeting about?”
She exhales a sigh of relief that she won’t have to bang your door down to wake you. “No idea. But Coyote said AM training was cancelled so it’s big. Want me to pick you up, it’s already 9.” You look around your room wildly realizing you have less than ten minutes to get ready.
“Yeah! I’ll get ready.” You hang up quickly and momentarily panic before you start rushing to get ready. Running to your closet you yank out your clean flight suit before dashing to your dresser. You pull out a bra and underwear before yanking them on. Pulling your flight suit on your damp body proves to be a difficult task but once you have it on you rush to the bathroom.
For the remaining six minutes you have before you hear Phoenix’ horn out front you blow dry as much of your hair as you can. When you’re done you dash to your room, pull on your shoes and assess your room. You grab your phone, wallet, and clearance badge before dashing out the house. The entire ride to base the car is quiet, but you can tell Phoenix is desperate to ask what the hell last night was about.
Pulling into base you quickly step out and head inside. You both take your seats in the briefing room and glance around. Everyone seems just as confused as you are. Your eyes briefly catch Rooster’s but you’re quick to look away. You all sit a little straighter as Maverick walks in and takes his spot at the front of the class.
You all sit on in utter bewilderment as Maverick explains the mission has been moved up. Instead of weeks to prepare you now have less than a week. When the meeting is adjourned it hits you. Someone isn’t coming back from this one. This mission was close to impossible a week ago. Now? It’s more than impossible. And the reality of casualties being a part of the mission now seem inevitable. As you think of losing one of her squad mates ice fills your veins. But when it occurs to you that Rooster could be the one you lose forever, your heart nearly stops. You stumble to stand and quickly follow everyone into the hallway leading out. They’ve given you the rest of the day to square things away before training resumes tomorrow.
You fumble to shove the door to the blistering heat outside open and spot Rooster quietly talking to Bob as he gets closer to his Bronco. Phoenix says something about giving you a ride home, but you can’t focus on anything but Rooster. The way things are it can’t be like that. Not with everything at stake right now. You can’t leave things like this with him. Not if by next week one of you could be dead. “I-I’ll catch you later, Phoenix.” You wave slightly before jetting off to catch up with Rooster.
You catch him as he’s pulling his door open. “Hey!” He stops and turns to you with a small smile as you jog over. You’re a little out of breath and struggling to figure out what to say to him but it’s gotta be something. As you both stand there, less than five feet away from each other, it hurts. There was a time, not that long ago, that you could have said anything to him without shame or embarrassment. Now you fumble for words like you’re drunk all over again. After a second it blurts out. “Can we talk? Um…. privately?”
He studies your face for a second before nodding. “Of course. I could use a drink anyway.” You smile weakly at him and walk around the Bronco. You climb in, more gracefully than you did last night, and buckle up. As he pulls out of the base you already know he’s headed for the Hard Deck. It’s your go-to place for a drink. On the way you settle into the seat, half-turning to face him. You study every bit of his face. Although you know he knows you’re staring at him, you can’t make yourself care. You analyze every crevice of his face as he focuses on the road ahead.
You barely notice when he pulls into the Hard Deck’s gravel parking lot and the sound of crashing waves fills the car. He puts it in park and shuts the Bronco off as you continue to watch him quietly from the passenger seat. You see him stare ahead for a moment before he takes his seatbelt off before turning his attention to you. There’s a moment of silence, where everything goes unsaid and your fear fills your veins once more. He licks his bottom lip before clearing his throat. “Um, what did you want to talk about?”
You waver, your confidence in what needs to be said fading with each second that he stares at you. How did you two get here? I mean, three weeks ago everything was wonderful. It was complicated, but it was everything to you. How’d you get here? Sitting in the Bronco with someone who mine as well be a stranger to you. As you’re chewing on the inside of your cheek you realize the tears are welling up in your eyes again. You avert your eyes from his and stare out the window before you feel like you can’t breathe.
You suck in a deep breath before pushing the door open and stepping out. You close the door behind you and wonder what you’re doing here. How do you fix something so broken? And what if you can’t? Do you just go about your lives, go on this mission with the possibility that this is it? That this could be the last moment you’re both alive and together? You realize your hands are shaking, tears are streaming down your face and you’re half-hyperventilating. You have a million things to say to him, but right now, not a single one feels right. You push off the car and head straight for the beach.
The sound of the waves crashing against the shore helps ease your mind, if only momentarily. You get a few feet from the waves and plop down in the sand. You pull your legs to your chest and wrap your arms tightly around them. You rest your chin on your knees and stare out at the ocean. Moments later, you sense him join you. He takes a seat less than an inch from you, your shoulders almost touching.
You sniff at a tear and angrily wipe them off your cheeks. Without thinking you just say the first thing that comes to mind. “You’re the only one in the world I want to talk to right now.” You stare straight ahead. “I said I wouldn’t call. I knew it would hurt, but….” You look over at him and realize he’s been staring at you the entire time. “I just wanted to talk to my best friend. I just wanted to hear your voice and pretend for a second that this doesn’t hurt like hell.”
When he moves a little fear runs through your veins thinking he’s about to get up and walk away. But instead, he turns to face you, crossing his legs in front of him and reaching out to you. He wipes away your tears and lets his hand rest against your cheek. “I’m glad you called. I am.” You stare into his eyes and see the sincerity within them.
“Sitting in that briefing today, all I could think about is that next week…. you could die. I could die. We could both die. And-I-I just couldn’t imagine leaving it like we did two weeks ago. Last night I fell asleep listening to your heartbeat, and this morning I woke up in your t-shirt like I always do, and I just. I can’t imagine it any other way, Rooster. I can’t imagine going to bed in an empty bed and waking up in my own shirt by myself.”
You press your cheek harder into his calloused palm and place your hand over his. “Two weeks ago, you were so full of hatred and anger towards Maverick. It scared me. Because every time you went up in that jet, I could see it clouding your judgement. You were so dead set on beating him and making him feel pain that you weren’t thinking about what you needed to do. And I just realized that if you kept going the way you were…. you weren’t going to make it out of this mission alive. And I couldn’t, Rooster, I could not stand by and watch you destroy yourself.”
“Savannah…. I didn’t even realize…I’m so sorry.” I shook my head at him and held on tighter to his hand. He scooted closer to me as the tears began to fall again.
“And then I guess I realized this morning it doesn’t matter. None of it does. Because if I can’t have you in my life, I don’t want it. You’re my best friend, but you’re so much more than that now. And I just don’t want to end things. I don’t want you as just a friend, or a squad mate, or a stranger. I want you.”
He pulled his hands away momentarily before grabbing both of mine in his and resting them in his lap. “I feel the same way. These past two weeks, pretending like you weren’t my first thought in the morning, the last thought in the evening, and every thought in between killed me. I just thought if ending things was what you wanted, I had to respect that. But I never wanted that. I never wanted to lose you.”
Before you could even register what was happening, he’d wrapped his arms around you and pulled you into his lap. You looked up at him and your lips instantly connected. The fire and passion and desperation were all mixed together, shooting fireworks behind your closed eyelids. You grasped at each other desperately, touch-starved, and just happy to be this close again.
When you pulled away enough to catch a breath you just stared up at him and he stared right back at you. After a moment he reached up and began stroking your cheek. “Sav, next week? We both come home, okay? No matter what, we both have to come home from this mission. I don’t care how impossible it seems. Because I’ve decided I can’t live in a world without you in it, and I think you feel the same.” You feverishly nodded your head to agree, and he smiled at your brilliantly. “Then it’s settled. Next week, we go on this mission, we kick ass, and we come home.”
You smiled with a nod and let out a sigh. “And then what?” You glanced away to look at the ocean and the sun ascending in the sky.
“And then, you marry me?”
You let out a little laugh and quickly looked back to his face. You expected to see his mischievous grin he always makes when he tells a funny joke he knows you’ll like. But the look in his eyes you were met with let you know this was no joke. “Bradley…. I mean…. marry you?”
He smiled widely and nodded. “Yeah, marry me. That’s what people do…when they love each other, right? And when they want to spend every single day for the rest of their lives together? So, when we get back from this mission, I want you to marry me, Savannah Marks. Will you?”
You stared into his eyes for a brief few moments. This was crazy. And sudden. But not. Because you’d known him years, but it felt like an eternity. And you knew, without a shadow of doubt in your mind that you loved him too. And you would spend the rest of your life with him, every single day, and it still wouldn’t be enough time with him. As you stared into his eyes it all became so clear, this was exactly what was supposed to happen.
“Yes. I will.”
With such enthusiasm it damn near knocked you both back down Rooster shot to his feet, dragging you with him. As he yelled out happily, he held you in his arms and spun you around as you giggled and screamed with delight. When you came to a stop you let out a final giggle and looked up at him. “Rooster, you big stud. Take me back home or lose me forever.”
He grinned so widely you thought his cheeks would crack. He nodded and pulled you closer into his arms.
“Show me the way home, honey.”

Servants of Insanity (Chapter Sixteen) Painful Realizations
The pain didn’t go away. From the curse, the information, the knowledge that my sister had to kill someone or from the mark that was all but burned into my forearm.
He didn’t listen to my sister when she told him to leave me out of it. Of course he didn’t, he was the very definition of evil. My mind was spinning, my body hurt and my mental state was on edge.
I walked silently between my sister and Draco. None of if uttering a word as we walked towards the castle. The main thing on my mind was all the people that followed him. Snape being one of them. His eyes never left me until he was being talked to by The Dark Wizard.
I was to get my own room, to follow threw on my tasks. Potions. Apparently it was a skill not many had. And that was why he wanted me. Is. He wanted my sister and I because our combined talents covered most everything he needed.
As we walked in threw the doors my sister stopped walking and grabbed my shoulders turning me to look at her as the doors closed with a loud thud behind us.
“Are you okay Tobi?”
I stared at her. No words leaving my lips. I couldn’t form the words. I didn’t want this, I never wanted any of this. Was I okay? No. And we both knew that. She knew before she asked. I pushed my body to stand up straight and stared at my sister for a moment longer before my eyes quickly glanced to Draco, who was watching me with so much worry, before I walked away from them both without a single word.
I wanted to scream. I wanted to cry. I wanted to run to Harry or Dumbledore and tell them what happened.
But instead I made my way into the commonroom and down the hall to the room I shared with my housemates and collapsed on my bed.
What the hell was I going to do?
I spent the next two days avoiding my sister and Draco. Avoiding everyone really. I didn’t want to risk someone finding anything out. So I kept to myself.
It wasn’t until I had detention with Draco again that I started to panic. I didn’t want to be alone with him. He’d ask questions I know he would. We were getting so close and now all I worried about was doing something wrong and getting him killed.
But regardless of how many times I tried to talk myself out of it, at 8pm Friday night I made my way to the great hall and waited. He didn’t take long to get there and then he silently lead me to an empty class room where in the middle of the room.
I looked at him confused at he shut the door and in one swift motion I was wrapped in his arms tightly. Something I never seen Draco do.
“I’ve been so worried Phoebe” he said quietly and I felt my body relax a little. He pulled back just enough to run his eyes over my face before they connected with mine and in an instant I lost all the composure I had and started sobbing.
“I don’t want this” I managed threw the tears and he nodded and tried whispering comforting words to calm me down which didn’t happen.
I don’t know how long he sat there with me until I calmed down enough to look up at him. He gently wiped the tears off my face and pushed some hair out of my face before he looked at me seriously.
“I promise I will never let anyone or anything hurt you” he said seriously before pulling my face to his and connecting our lips. I wasn’t sure I believed him. I believed his intentions but I don’t know if Draco can protect himself let alone me.
But in that moment I chose not to think about it, for at least the time being. Right now all I wanted to think about was Draco.
Not Voldemort, not my sister, not the impending war.
Nothing.
Just Draco.
His voice was deep and for some reason I trusted him. I didn’t say anything I simply just nodded and swallowed the lump in my throat. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep Draco” I said quietly causing him to gently grab my chin and made me look at him.
“I promise you, I will never let anyone hurt you” he said ah

Servants of Insanity (Chapter Fifteen) Threatening Death
That night I waited for a while in the common room just working on Divination homework until the clock struck six. I then casually stood up and put my books in my room before pulling on my cloak and walking out. Pansy stopped me right as I was about to go out and smirked. “Where do you think you’re going so late?” I growled slightly at the interruption of my plans and turned to her with a smile on my face.
“Well, some of us aren’t a total disappointment to our parents and actually got to be Prefects, so I’m going out on a patrol. I suggest you do a little more studying, your grades could use it, I’m sure.” She opened her mouth in astonishment as I turned my back and walked out. She was getting more balls and it would end badly for her. I wasn’t one to be messed with. I always had a million things on my mind and it was difficult to work out. I ran all the way to the Astronomy tower and when I reached it I was completely out of breath. Ron was standing there waiting and smiled at me.
“I wanted to talk to you.” I smiled and took a couple deep breaths to calm my breathing.
“About what?” He took a step towards me and looked like he wanted to do something but thought better of it. I watched him carefully and soon his eyes changed. I knew what was coming. I opened my mouth and sighed. “Ron, don’t. Please? Okay, just don’t. Because I’m going to mess it up. I mess everything good up in my life and I don’t want to mess this up, so just don’t.”
He seemed disheartened by this but then spoke above my ramblings. “You won’t mess this up. You can’t mess this up, because I won’t let you.” I shook my head because he had no idea what I was capable of. “I know you think you’re dangerous because you’re a Slytherin bu- “
I cut him off quickly. “Ron, I’m a Death Eater.” He silenced at this and I felt the need to explain before I scared him off for good. “I did it for my sister. He wanted her, and I couldn’t let him have her. So, I joined because I thought maybe…I don’t know, maybe I could figure out a way to stop him. But I haven’t yet. But I know you think this can work but it just can’t.”
He stared at me for the longest time and I thought for sure it was really over. He was going to walk away, never speak to me again, and tell Harry Potter and probably Dumbledore that I was a Death Eater and that would be the end of me at Hogwarts. And the Dark Lord would probably kill me off for telling someone not in the ranks and I’d be dead.
Ron let out a long breath and I thought for sure he was going to walk away. But he took two quick steps towards me, wrapped his arms around my waist, and pulled me into a kiss. A real one, not a quick peck. I was stunned for the first couple of seconds and then wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him back. I couldn’t believe it. He hadn’t left, it was just the opposite.
When he pulled away he gently caressed my cheek and smiled at me. “You’re not a Death Eater by choice, you joined to stop him. I admire that about you. And you did it to protect your sister, I would have done the same thing in your shoes.” I smiled up at him until we heard someone coming. I shoved him away and motioned for him to hide down the opposite corridor.
He got there in the nick of time because right as he hid someone came around the corner. I turned and exhaled deeply when I saw Draco. “There you are. Pansy said you’d run off in quite the hurry. I worried about you, what are you doing all the way up here?”
He glanced around and then grinned. “Don’t have someone up here with you, do you? I thought this was sort of the spot to make out with people in secret?” He started to look around and with the calmest demeanor I could muster up I let out a laugh and he turned to me.
“You’re joking right, who would even meet me up here after we dated?” I walked over to him and looped my arm through his. He gave me a strange look and I smiled. “Everyone is scared to come near me now, afraid you might still have feelings for me.” He chuckled and patted my arm.
“You know I’d kill someone if they hurt you.” I smiled at him and then was reminded of what my sister had said earlier.
“Speaking of hurting people, if you hurt my sister or string her along any more than you already have I’ll kill you.” He looked shocked that I knew and then I felt the need to clarify for him. “She tells me everything. So, are we clear?” I stared at him, trying to convey how serious I was. If there was one person who I would kill for, it was her. He nodded slowly and I smiled. “Good, glad we got that all straightened out.”
We got back to our common room and went our separate ways. I was almost out of my day clothes and into my night when my arm began throbbing. He was calling to us. I checked the time and it was later than I expected. The sun was beginning to set and I knew he’d want us at our usual spot. I got dressed in skinny jeans and a simple t-shirt before throwing my cloak on. I grabbed my wand and slid it up my sleeve, having this strange feeling I might need it tonight and walked out of my room.
Draco stood waiting for me and it was a relief that he’d gotten the call too. “Let’s go, you know how impatient he gets.” He said to me as we both started walking. We left the castle in a hurry and arrived in our usual clearing, but what I saw had me absolutely petrified.
Tobi was standing in the middle of the clearing with Bellatrix LeStrange close by her. Our mother was trying to speak to her but it obviously wasn’t going as planned. Everyone turned to us as we entered and I couldn’t believe he’d lied. Somehow, I should have known, but Tobi was to remain out of this. Instead, he brought her directly in. Bellatrix had her arm wrapped around Tobi and her wand straight to her throat. Out of instinct I pulled forward but Draco pulled me back, knowing how crazy his aunt could be.
I heard Draco whisper her name but was too shocked to move. That is, until Bellatrix LeStrange made her biggest mistake. I heard her mutter the Cruciatus Curse and my sister’s screams filled the forest. She dropped to her knees and I yanked away from Draco. “Crucio.” I shouted into the air as my wand was aimed right at Bella. The second I said it pain rippled through her body and my sister was freed from her curse.
My father and mother began shouting as I watched Bellatrix rive in pain on the floor. Screams filling the air. The Dark Lord watched for several moments before shouting. “Enough!”
I pulled my wand away and Bellatrix lay on the floor, too weak to stand up. My sister was staring at me with a mixture of thankfulness, astonishment, and she was also slightly scared. The Cruciatus curse was advanced magic, but I’d been practiced for a while. Bella was glaring at me before she turned to Voldemort. “Do something!”
I turned to Voldemort, feeling bolder than I’d ever felt in my life, and scowled. “I made myself clear. Tobi was to be left out of this! But, seeing as you have decided that’s not going to happen, I will make myself clear once more.” I pointed to Bella who still lay on the ground and practically growled. “You keep your filthy mutt of a servant in line, or I will kill her. If she lays another disgusting finger on my sister, or so much as mutters a curse her way it will be the last thing she ever does. Can we agree on that?”
Everyone in the clearing had their mouths wide open, including my parents, Draco, and my sister. I guaranteed no one had ever spoken to the Dark Lord like I had just done. But I was absolutely furious. I couldn’t believe after he’d gone out of his way to get her here he’d allow Bellatrix to curse her.
Voldemort stared for the longest time at me before clearing his throat and nodding. “I can agree to that.” He turned to Bellatrix who was finally rising to her feet and nodded Tobi’s direction. “It is to be made clear that neither of the Cavanaugh sisters are to be touched or cursed. If they are, you’ll have me to deal with.” He turned to me as if seeking my approval and I gave him a curt nod. I walked over to Tobi and helped her to her feet.
“Now, where were we?” The Dark Lord said and my blood rushed cold as I could only imagine why he had called us all for a meeting, including Tobi. I only hoped he wouldn’t mention me having to assassinate Dumbledore or I feared I’d lose my sister forever.

Servants of Insanity (Chapter Fourteen) Good day, bad night
I was about halfway back to the castle when Taryn caught up to me and wrapped her arm around my shoulder. "So, why'd he hit Potter?" she asked and I smiled slightly before shrugging slightly. "He said it was because he didn't like the way he was touching me" I said and I watched as she held back a snort causing me to snicker and before we knew it we were both laughing. "Jealous much?" she said and i shrugged. "I don't know. He acts like he liked me but then he ditches you know. I don't like that it seems like he is leading me on. I don't want to be another name on his list."
I said the last part quietly and she tightened her arm on my shoulder but didn't say anything. I think she understood. She knew Draco better than almost anyone. I had a slightly idea that she would probably talk to him tonight and i was torn on if i wanted her to or not. At the moment i was just happy that she didn't say anything deeper into the subject.
We walked back to the castle in silence, but a comfortable silence. My mind traveled over everything we had talked about last night. My eyes drifted to her covered arm and i bit my lip slightly. "Why does he want me?" I asked causing her to look at me confused but she instantly knew by the way i looked at her that I wasn't talking about Draco, not that i understood why he liked me either. But i was talking about Voldemort and she knew that. A sigh seeped threw her lips as she shoved her hands in her pockets.
"We are strong together Tobi. That is all he told me. With our combined talents, we could win this war for him. On opposite sides..." she drifted off and i nodded in understanding. Taryn's talent was in dark arts. Any kind of them. But mine? What talent did i possess that he could want? I sighed slightly and pulled Draco's jacket tighter around myself. How was i going to get this back to him? Probably just give it to him during detention tomorrow.
Once we got into the castle we said our goodbyes and went our separate ways. I made my way up to my room and flopped down on my bed for about ten minutes just with the kiss between Draco and I repeating in my head causing me to smile. I eventually sat up and grabbed my bag and shoved my arm in it and Jilly walked in and tilted her head at me confused. "Extension spell" I said and she nodded as I pulled out the stuff i bought today. "Sorry i had to run, I uh..." "Had to go snog your secret boyfriend Seamus?" I asked and her eyes widened slightly causing me to laugh. "Yeah I know. You can't keep secrets from me Jilly. Especially not when you stare at him longingly from the table" I said and she blushed.
The rest of the night was pretty normal, mostly full of homework for me. When i woke up the next morning I was still surrounded by school books. I groaned and Pushed myself up and glanced at the clock. 8:48 am. "Bloody hell!" i shot up and ran into the bathroom quickly taking the fastest shower of my life. Today I had detention with Draco. Detention on a weekend. Dumbledore was rude. But it started at 9am. Once i was clean i used my wand to dry my hair as i pulled on a pair on black skinny jeans and a white long sleeved shirt. i pulled on a pair of white flats before grabbing my wand and Draco's jacket and running out of the room unintentionally slamming the door. I ran all the way to the great hall and glanced around. Draco was nowhere to be found so I slid up on top of the Hufflepuff table and took a deep breath.
"Ready Love?"
I about screamed as my head wipped to the left where Draco was standing with a smirk on his face and i glared at him causing him to laugh. I glared at him and went to hit him when he grabbed my hand and gently pulled my off the table. "Come on Phoebe" he said and I froze and stared at him. He smirked and i glared. "Why" i said sharply and he smirked "A little birdie" he said and I flexed my fingers slightly. His smirk only widened as he turned and walked out of the great hall. I slowly followed him debating on throwing my wand at the back of his head.
We walked until we came to an empty hallway with all the suits of armor and i looked at him as he pointed towards the bucket and i groaned. "Really?" i asked and he smirked before walking closer to me and brushing some hair out of my face as his smirk fell. "I'm sorry for leading you on, but i promise that is not my intention, i just, couldn't live with myself if anything happened to you Tobi" he said as his thumb ran over my cheek and I sighed slightly.
"Nothing will happen to me, i promise. I'm a big girl i can take care of myself. I'm smarter then you think Draco" I said and he nodded. "I know you are. I care about you Phoebe" he said and I glared causing the smile to return. "I'm going to call you that from now on" he said and I groaned. "Why?" it came out more of a whine then a question. "Because, nobody else can, it makes me special" he said and i smiled. "You are already special. You mean more to me then almost anyone" I said and his eyes ran over my face slowly. "Phoebe, you are the most important person to me, i will do anything to protect you, to make you happy. I fought for so long to stay away from you and i just...can't anymore" he said and I took a deep breathe before looking up at him.
"Then don't"
That seemed to be all he needed to hear before he gently pushed me against the wall and slammed his lips on mine.
I wrapped my arms tightly around his neck as his found the way to my neck to hold me in place. Not that I was going anywhere.
We pulled away sometime later and he leaned his forehead against mine as we both took deeb breathes. His eyes locked with mine before his lips moved towards mine again.
“Draco I…detention” I said causing him to smirk at my lack of words before he waved his wand and the cloth moved towards the knight and Draco’s lips found mine again.
When my detention was over Draco made sure I found my to my commotion before briefly kissing my head and walking away causing me to smile. “Goodnight Draco” I said and turned around but kept walking down the hall. “Goodnight my Phoebe” he said before turning around.
I waited until he was out of sight before walking into the common room I sat down in my favorite chair that practically had my name written on it and sighed in contempt. Maybe everything would turn out okay. I grabbed a book off the bookshelf, something about potions, and started to read it.
I spent maybe about an hour sitting there reading before making my way up to the room which was empty. I laid down on my bed and was about to fall asleep when a tapping on the window snapped me up.
I slowly got up and walked over seeing a black owl I didn’t recognize standing on the window seal with a letter in it’s beak. I slowly opened the window and took the letter allowing the bird to disappear above the castle. I flipped over the letter to see Tobias written on the front and smiled slightly. Taryn had called me that for years when she swore up and down I wasn’t girly enough.
I ripped open the letter as I was sitting on the bed and tilted my head against the bed post.
Tobias,
I need to talk to you about something. It’s serious. Meet me at the edge of the forest by the black lake off school grounds after dusk.
-Taryn
I stared at the letter confused. What did she need that was that important. I looked outside to see the sun was setting and shot up. I grabbed my bag, because I don’t go anywhere without it, and my wand and bolted outside. I was going to be late. I shoved my wand up the inside of my sleeve and ran threw the corridors of the castle till I got outside.
When I got to the edge of the forest by the lake I caught a glimpse of someone in black walking and blinked. “Tar?” I asked walking towards her. She must not have heard me to I moved to follow her as quickly as I could and came to a stop when she turned around.
It wasn’t my sister. It was my mother.
I blinked and before in could say anything she gently grabbed my arm and led me deeper into the forest. After what seemed like ages we came to a stop in front of a group of people and I glanced around.
Voldemort stood with a smile on his snake like face and I narrowed my eyes slightly. I scanned the crowd for my sister and when I realized she wasn’t there I put two and two together.
Taryn didn’t write me. He did.
“How’d you know what she used to call me?” I asked without hesitation. My mother hissed slightly and a woman I knew to be Bellateix glared at me. “How dare you speak without being spoken to!” She hissed pointing her want at me. I dropped my wand from my sleeve into my hand and glared at her.
“Tobi” my mother hissed and I looked down at her and narrowed my eyes. My first mistake was looking away from Bellatrix because the next moment she grabbed me and held her wand to my throat.
The smash of a twig cause her attention and she turned to look and I glanced over to see Taryn and Draco walking up but they both stopped as soon as they saw the situation.
“Tobi” Draco whispered as My sister just stared. I moved to pull away when I heard Bellatrix say something and pain shot threw my entire body causing a scream to escape my lips as I landed hard on the ground as the unforgivable curse ran threw my body.
This was not how I wanted my night to go.

Servants of Insanity (Chapter Thirteen) Coming Clean
I made it halfway to Dumbledore’s office when I heard footsteps behind me. I attempted to ignore them thinking it was just eager students trying to get to class. But it became apparent when I rounded a corner that the footsteps were following me. I turned on my heels and held my wand at the ready when the Weasley twins rounded the corner after me. I narrowed my eyes at both of them as they jokingly held up their arms in surrender. “Jeez, you always ready to kill someone like that?”
Letting a smirk take over my face I shrugged. “Depends on what the people following me want.” I looked between the two of them and they exchanged a look before Fred cleared his throat.
“We think Ron might be in some trouble.” I kept my face neutral as I listened to him and let a lazy look cross my face.
“And what exactly makes you think that’s my problem, Weasley? Aren’t you two the experts in trouble? Just get him out of it.” George was quick to pipe up this time, even being so brave as to take a step forward. I kept my wand raised and at the ready.
“Because you are the trouble our brother is in. Whatever is going on between you. We’re worried about him.” I let out a scoff but my heart was beating so hard I was worried they could hear it.
“I haven’t the slightest idea what you’re talking about.” They both exchanged another look as I lowered my wand slowly, they obviously weren’t here to threaten me.
“We think you do.” They said at the same time and then finally Fred took over once more. “Listen, we see the way he’s been looking at you. For a while now. And never in our wildest dreams did we think you’d give him the time of day so it wasn’t that big of a deal. But now you’re going on patrols together and you’re saying good morning to him in front of his friends and we’re worried he’ll get the wrong idea.”
They were about 100 times more perceptive than I’d ever given them credit for. I waited until he was done speaking and then I mulled it over in my head. I could deny the whole thing, pretend I hadn’t the slightest idea what they were talking about. But they were notorious for not giving up. Finally, I decided the softer approach might work better. I cleared my throat and then took a step forward, careful to look around and make sure no one was around to hear me.
“Let’s get one thing straight, we are not to be seen together again, understood? It’s bad enough everyone is seeing me with one Weasley, but three? You’re asking for the danger. Second off, I’m not trying to get your brother in trouble, I’m trying to keep him out of it. But he seems keen on staying in it, something I’m sure his friend Potter helps him with quite a bit. But, as it stands, I’ve grown rather fond of him, which I hate to admit. So, let’s try not to make a big deal out of this and this information won’t fall into the wrong hands, eh boys?”
They stared at me for a long time, probably trying to decide if I was being genuine. But finally, they cracked a smile and nudged each other. “So, Ron does have a shot, eh?!” I rolled my eyes and pointed at them.
“I mean it, Weasleys’, mouths shut.” I turned away and walked to the headmaster’s entrance and went upstairs. He knew I was coming so I felt no need to knock. When I got to his door I stopped and raised my hand, unsure of what to do. But a knowing voice inside told me. “You may enter.”
Rolling my eyes, I entered the office and glanced around until I found Dumbledore sitting in an arm chair petting his pet phoenix. I stood in the doorway after closing it and stared him down. He motioned for me to sit in the chair opposite him but I crossed my arms trying to convey how uncomfortable I was. He seemed to wait a moment before speaking. “I wanted to ask you how detention was coming along.”
I snorted out loud and hoped he could tell I could see right through whatever it was he was doing here. “You wanted to see how detention was doing? And who else have you asked?” I stared at his blue eyes and he gave me a tiny smile.
“I’ll admit, you’re the first.” I nodded slowly and glanced around the office at all the pictures of previous headmasters and headmistresses. It was obvious Dumbledore was up to something here, but what I hadn’t the slightest idea.
“Headmaster, I’m missing class for this. Is there a real reason you asked me here or is that truly it?” He seemed to be staring at me, but almost past me. As if he was staring into a deeper part of me; a part I wasn’t willing to share with him. It felt invasive. Finally, he smiled and then stood up slowly.
“Well, I’m assuming that detention is going well. I was just hoping to put my two cents in, if I may.” I gave him a fake smile as I held my hand on the door, hoping to signal that I was ready to leave.
“I’m sure I’ll hear it either way. So, go ahead.” I was honestly surprised he was taking so much tone from me. Dumbledore had always shown an odd fascination with my sister and I and I was never really sure why.
“I think it’s good of you to keep the company that you’re keeping. The newer company. I think you can learn a lot from the Weasley boys….and maybe they can even help you with any troubles you may be having, maybe even the youngest Weasley brother.” At this my face flushed a scarlet red.
I wanted to ask him where he got off commenting on my private life when he lifted a hand and smiled. “You should get to class now, I would hate to deprive you of a good Herbology class. I’ll send an owl to Professor Sprout and explain why you were late.” I opened my mouth and then closed it and left quickly. I couldn’t believe he’d just commented on me talking to the Weasley’s. How did he even know?
I tried to shake it off as I entered the third greenhouse and joined my peers. Draco gave me a suspicious look but I shook it off. I wouldn’t even know how to tell him what Dumbledore had wanted, although I had better get started on a compelling story because he’d want to know something. I noticed Ron staring at me in a concerned way and shot him a small smile before I pulled out my Herbology book and leafed through until I found the page we were on.
I tried to focus during class but it was hard because I could feel Ron’s eyes on me, but I could also feel Draco and my sister’s. Sometimes it was a curse having your sister be as intelligent as you, if not more. She was in practically every class Draco and I were in. She wasn’t even with most of the other student’s in her house because she was so advanced.
Feeling her watching me throughout class made it harder to focus. When the bell rang for us to take a break and get to Defense Against the Dark Arts I practically ran out. Draco was quick to catch up but I told him I was in a foul mood and needed some time alone. I went to my room and grabbed my books before heading to class. I met up with him shortly after and like a good friend he kept quiet.
I was about to walk into Defense Against the Dark Arts when someone grabbed my arm. I turned around with a murderous look and saw that it was only my sister. She smiled and waited for everyone to pass before turning her serious eyes onto me. “I want to talk to you. Something is going on with you and I want to know what. We used to talk all the time and now we’re like strangers, I hate it. Just, talk to me.”
Sighing deeply, I glanced around and then nodded. “Fine, but not here. Later.” She nodded and I went into class. I sat down next to Draco who seemed concerned about me but I shook it off. I took my notes and aced the quiz from last week and was pretty sure I aced today’s quiz too. I had always excelled at the Dark Arts and the knowledge of everything about it. It was my talent, much like my sister had her potions.
When class was over I caught up to Tobi in the hallway while Draco hung back with Crabbe and Goyle. “Tonight, 9 o’clock the Astronomy Tower. I’ll let Draco know you’ll be late for detention.” She nodded and I walked off quickly. I loved her but if I was going to tell her what was going on I needed it to be as low key as possible. It wouldn’t protect her if everyone knew what we were talking about, and one of us would end up getting killed.
The rest of the day was slow and more than once I felt like dozing off. I got through the rest of my classes and ended up taking a nap with my cat before I woke up with a start around 8:50. I quickly got dressed for detention and then ran quickly out the common room after letting Draco know that Tobi would be late for detention.
I made it to the Astronomy right after 9 and found Tobi already waiting for me. “Hey.” It was awkward as she responded with her own hello and I hated it. Tobi and I’s relationship had never been so strained and I hated Voldemort for it. But tonight, that changed.
“I wanted to talk to you because things have been weird between us and I hate that. I think that last year and this summer have been really weird for us and quite the adjustment.” She nodded and suddenly she was spewing out words.
“I’m sorry. I know things have been weird and I kind of blame you for that. You’ve been really distant but I know that I haven’t been that great either. Last year with Cedric was just really tough and I know you didn’t approve of me talking to him bu-“
“Cedric and I were dating.” It slipped out as she was going on her rant and she froze. She stared at me for the longest time. She opened and closed her mouth a few times. I shook my head slightly and cleared my throat. “I don’t really know when it started, one day I hated the kid and the next I was in love with him. We couldn’t tell anyone, and I didn’t want you thinking I was taking him away from you, so we just kept it to ourselves. I was worried everyone knowing he was talking to me would get him hurt.”
She nodded slowly and then my eyes welled up. “And then Voldemort found out….and he killed him anyway.” My sister’s mouth dropped at this, because everyone thought Cedric had just been a casualty between the war of Harry and Voldemort. But I knew the truth. And Voldemort did too. I thought she’d hate me but instead she walked over quickly and enveloped me in a hug.
“It’s okay. It wasn’t your fault. It’s his fault, it’s Voldemort’s fault.” I nodded against her shoulder but I still knew who was to blame.
“It’s going to happen again, Tobs. He’s going to kill everyone that I care about if he doesn’t approve.” She pulled away slightly and wiped my tears with her thumb. She went to shake her head but before I knew what was happening I spit it out. “I think I’m falling for Ron Weasley.” She gave a small smile and I was shocked.
“Yeah, I kind of thought so. I’ve never seen you talk to anyone outside of Slytherin before this morning at breakfast. You said good morning to him and I thought he might fall out of his chair.” I let out a small laugh and then she started to look guilty. I gave her a look and she cracked. “Draco kissed me.”
It was my turn to smile at this and she looked just as shocked. “I thought he might do that soon. He’s been watching you all term.” She was more than shocked as she shook her head.
“You’re not mad? I know you guys dated last year and I guess we never really talked about why that ended.” I smiled and shrugged, releasing her from my grip finally as we sat down on the only bench up here. I looked out at the vast sky and felt more at home than in our mansion.
“Because I can’t imagine ending up like mom and dad.” I glanced at her as I said this and she seemed to understand. “Everybody thought we were such a good idea, so we tried it, but it lacked everything I’ve ever wanted. And then I met Cedric and that was really it for me. I didn’t need any more proof that my love for Draco would never be any more than for a brother.”
She nodded and we sat in silence for a little while. Finally, I took a deep breath and turned to her. “I’m a Death Eater….” She took a moment and finally turned back to me. She sighed very deeply and I knew that she’d known all along. She nodded when our eyes met and I asked her mentally. “I did it to protect you, Tobi. I never wanted to lie to you, but I didn’t want you seeing me differently. He wanted both of us, and I told him I’d join if he left you out of it.” Her eyes widened at the prospect that the Dark Lord would want her as well.
“I never wanted you involved in any of this. But I needed you to know because I absolutely hate keeping things from you.” She nodded and smiled.
“I’m glad you told me. I don’t like it, but I get why you did it.” We sat there just catching up about everything until we had to go to detention. The rest of the night was quiet and by the next day I was in a decent mood.
We went to Hogsmeade and that was nice until Draco ran off and started a fight with Harry. I wasn’t sure what had started it but I knew that Draco needed to cut it out. After pulling them apart I turned to Tobi and sighed. “Take Draco.” I grabbed Potter’s arm and dragged him away and dragged him into the Three Broomsticks. He kept trying to push me off but I cleaned his bloody face up and sighed as Ron and Hermione came in looking for him.
Ron smiled at me while I got a scowl from Hermione as they asked what had happened. I stood up and looked to Harry. “Sorry about him.” He nodded and I could see he was starting to look at me differently because I’d helped him, which wasn’t very good. I started to walk off but Ron came up behind me and grabbed my arm. “Can I see you later?”
I stared into his eyes and then sighed. “Yeah, Astronomy Tower?” He grinned at me and nodded. I walked off with a smile on my face intending to find my sister and Draco. It was wrong to see Ron, I knew that.
But if it was wrong, why did it feel so right?

Servants of Insanity (Chapter Twelve) Fights
I don’t remember much as I walked back to the castle. Or from dinner. I remember being in my bed I stared at the ceiling deep in thought as the other girls slept around me. I did not sleep at all. My mind too clouded over with thoughts, not just of Draco either. My mind, possibly irrationally, felt anger towards my sister. We used to be close and I’ve never felt further away from her then I did now. She hadn’t told me what was going on, and knowing her she would spew off about my safety or something like that. Which would only anger me more.
Before I knew it Jilly was sitting up in her bed rubbing her eyes. By this time I had sat up against the headboard of my bed and had been using my wand to conjure up birds allowing them to fly around me silently.
Her eyes turned to land on me and she blinked against the sunlight behind me. “Have you slept at all?” I shrugged as a response to her question before getting up. “Are you going to Hogsmeade today?” She asked and I looked at her slowly. Was that seriously today. “Sure” I said before grabbing out a set of clothes consisting of a black skirt with black suspenders and a dark yellow jumper with a white collar, a pair of black tights and black knee high socks to go under the tights. I walked into the bathroom and took a shower, magically drying my hair and curling the ends before getting dressed. I applied a little bit of eyeliner and walked out and over to my bed tossing my dirty clothes in the hamper.
As I was pulling on a pair of black flats with an angle clasp my mind wondered to if Draco would like it. I shook my head and stood up realizing Jilly was gone and rolled my eyes. I made my way out of the dorm and shoving my wand up my sleeve just in case and grabbing my iPod before shutting the door and slinging a small yellow handbag over my shoulder as I went.
It wasn’t till I was halfway to Hogsmeade I realized how cold it actually was. I brushed it off and continued my walk to the village admiring the snow as I went with my headphones in my ears behind my hair. I walked threw a few shops, buying so more potions supplies and a bag of sweets.
I was in my own little world ignoring the rush of people around me when a hand landed on my shoulder causing me to jump. I spun around and my eyes landed on the familiar greens or Harry. “Blimey Harry you gave me a fright” I said and he smiled sliding an arm around my shoulder. “Sorry Tobi. You look lovely today” he said and I rolled my eyes slightly.
“Trying to make Ginny jealous Potter?” I asked shoving a gummy something in my mouth and holding one up to him. “No she is to. It’s with Dean who I think is trying to make you jealous” he said and I snorted slightly. “In order for it to make me jealous, I’d have to actually like him” I said and he laughed. “Do you?” I shook my head. “No I don’t, besides my mind is conflicted enough without Dean Thomas trying to invade it with his infatuation” I said and he pulled me closer.
“You should have a jacket little Tobi” he said and I shrugged in response. “What is your mind conflicted about?” He asked.
Harry was a friend, a good friend. But did I want to tell him what Draco said or how I felt about Draco.
“Well…this boy, recently told me he liked me yeah?” I said and he nodded “many boys like you Tobi” he said and I waved him off. “Right, anyways I had always thought said boy had liked my sister but he doesn’t and now I’m confused” I said and he smiled “Well do you like him?” I bit my lip slightly. “I mean yeah, I have for a while but it was like one of those day dream things, I never thought he’d like me too and then he said that and now I just like, I don’t know”
He nodded to himself and opened his mouth to say something when his arm was yanked off me harshly and he was shoved against a wall and decked in the face. My eyes widened as I looked at Draco and then without hesitation, upon seeing who hit him, Harry struck back.
Holy shit.
My mind snapped backup reality and stopped think that ‘omg Draco is fighting for me’ and I rushed over to them and pulled Harry back and he shoved me back, not harshly but with enough force that I moved away as Draco landed another fist to his face. I let out a legit scream as my foot got caught on something and the force of Harry’s push and the trip I stumbled backwards and slammed into the wall and slid down to the ground.
Draco was next to me instantly and my sister came out of nowhere and pulled Harry back as he moved towards me. “Tobi you okay?” She asked gently and I nodded. She pulled Harry out of the alleyway and I looked up at Draco. His lip was bleeding as well as his nose. He gently pushed some hair out of my face and I reached into my bag and pulled out a handkerchief and gently wiped the blood off his lip.
“Are you okay Love?” He asked causing a blush to rush to my cheeks. “You are the one bleeding Draco” I said and he shrugged. “I don’t like him touching you” he said and I bit my lip slightly as I wiped the blood off his face. He lifted me up easily and set me on my feet. I dusted the snow off my clothes and looked up to him. He was in a pair of dark pants with a black jumper and a black jacket.
He pulled the jacket off and wrapped it around my shoulders. I stared up at him and he gently ran his thumb over my bottom lip and I narrowed my eyes slightly. “You say you like me, you try to kill Harry for touching me and yet you still won’t kiss me” I said.
I startled myself slightly with my own bravery but I didn’t show it. “It’s dangerous” he said and I rolled my eyes. “Life is dangerous” I said and he stepped back slightly and I shook my head in disappointment. “Tobi you don’t understand-“
I cut him off with a laugh and crossed my arms. “No you don’t understand, I’ve liked you for like ever, seriously and you tell me the one thing I’ve wanted to hear and the. You just disappear” I said throwing my hands up. “Do me a favor Draco, if you like me act like it otherwise stop leading me on” I said shoving his jacket into his chest and walking away.
I didn’t get far before I was pulled back and before I could say anything he slammed his lips on mine. I wrapped my arms around his neck as his slipped around my waist. Not to be cliché but it was everything I’d always dreamed about.
We pulled away and he wrapped his jacket around my shoulders again and walked away. I stood there for a moment, until he was out of sight, and only moved when Jilly popped up in front of me.
“Did you get anything?” I nodded slowly. “I uh, I got some potions ingredients and some sweets” I said. “Tobi you look like you are stunned, your cheeks are all rosy” she said and I nodded and looked at her for the first time. “Stunned to say the least” I said looking around for Draco, but as always, he was gone.

Servants of Insanity (Chapter Eleven) Warming Up
We were pretty silent for the longest time until I heard him humming to himself. I smiled to myself slightly and turned to him. “How are you in such a good mood? We’re in detention….” He glanced up from the trophy he was currently polishing and gave me a large, toothy smile and shrugged.
“Dunno, could be worse. I could be stuck in the dorms working on homework with Harry and Hermione.” I chuckled under my breath and nodded.
“Yeah, I suppose you’re right.” I went back to polishing the trophies but it appeared I had opened a door to conversation that Ron wasn’t going to let close again.
“How do you think Tobi and Draco are faring?” I rolled my eyes and glanced back at Ron remembering the way Draco was staring at Tobi all morning and her quick glances back at him.
“Oh, I’m sure they’re fine.” At my tone of voice, he looked up at me and his nose scrunched up. I could practically see his thoughts churning inside his head. He opened his mouth a few times but quickly shut it. I let out a small laugh and shook my head at him. “Well, spit it out, Weasley, we have all night.”
It was like word vomit for him, his words came tumbling out of his mouth. “What’s up with you and Draco anyway, I heard you guys were dating and then you broke up.” He said it all in one breath and the second it was said and done he looked in between fear and regret.
I raised an eyebrow at him and before I could help it I let out a chuckle and shook my head in awe. “My, my, my. It’s like you just can’t help it, Weasley. You just thoroughly enjoy putting your nose where it doesn’t belong, don’t you?” He opened his mouth, most likely to apologize but I laughed out loud. “Don’t apologize, I suppose being blunt isn’t the worst thing a person could be.”
I polished for a moment more and I could practically feel Ron’s eyes on me, waiting for my answer to his question. After a second I put the trophy I was working on down and looked up at him. “I think Draco and I are too obvious.” Ron’s eyebrows furrowed together in confusion and I knew I’d need to explain. “I think we started dating because everyone else thought it was a good idea. I’ve never really looked at him like that, and I don’t think he’s seen me like that either. But once we were in it, although it was comfortable, it just…. lacked what it needed. He was still just Draco, and I was still just me.”
Ron nodded slightly and I realized he’d been polishing the same trophy for the past several minutes. “Yeah, I guess I could see that. I get what you’re saying, you guys do kind of seem like the obvious choice for each other.” He cracked a smile at me and I nodded.
“I mean, he’s great,” At this he scrunched his nose, obviously not in agreement. “I dunno, he’s just not the guy for me. I don’t want to end up like my parents, in some loveless marriage that makes sense because other people told us it worked.” After saying all of this my lips pursed together tightly because I realized I had revealed a lot in the past couple of minutes. Out of habit, I got defensive. “What would your girlfriend, Granger, think of you talking to me?”
I was surprised to see his nose wrinkled up in disgust as I said this and he was already shaking his head. “She’s not my girlfriend. Hermione is great, just…not the girl for me.” I smiled slightly as his words reflected my own about Draco. I nodded in understanding and we went back to polishing the trophies in silence.
“You’re alright, you know? I was really dreading patrols with you, no offense. I’ve just never really had good experiences with you, in fact, most people haven’t. I was worried that patrols would be worse than I even imagined, but you’re alright.” I smiled to myself as I finished polishing the last trophy.
After I was done I stood up and looked at Ron. “Thanks. You’re not too bad yourself…. for a Gryffindor.” He chuckled and I held out my hand to help him to his feet. When I pulled him to his feet he was only a few mere inches away from my face and I swear I heard his breath hitch in his throat. Something about the air felt electric until I heard footsteps fast approaching us.
I took a quick step back right as Draco rounded the corner looking flustered. “Taryn, there you are. Detention is over.” He gave Ron a nasty look as he approached and I nodded.
“Alright, let’s go.” He noticed how close Ron was to me and stepped closer to him but I grabbed his upper arm and dragged him back. “Let’s go. I’m too tired for problems tonight.” Draco snarled but turned away and we walked down the hall together. I glanced behind us at Ron who mouthed “thanks” to me before we rounded the corner.
That night for some reason I was restless. I tossed and turned until the early hours of the morning when exhaustion overtook me. I woke up the next morning and realized I was awake much later than I was used to. I was sure the Great Hall would be packed by now. I quickly got into my school wardrobe rolling up the skirt so it was a little shorter and leaving my tie undone for the time-being. I pulled on my robes and exited my room quickly.
When I entered the Great Hall, it was full. I walked quickly over to the Slytherin table but took a detour past the Gryffindor table. I smiled ever so slightly to myself as Ron caught sight of me and his fork dropped out of his hand. I shook my head and took a seat next to Draco who chuckled. “Oversleep, Cavanaugh?”
I ignored his comment and poured myself a cup of coffee. I added cream and sugar and pretended to listen to Pansy drone on about our morning class and how unfair it was to have it with Gryffindor because Hermione was an insufferable know-it-all. Goosebumps appeared on my arm as I got the distinct feeling someone was watching me, and I had a pretty good idea who.
I glanced around my table to see if anyone was paying attention but everyone was engrossed in the conversation. I glanced up slowly and quickly caught Ron’s eyes on me. I tried to fight it but a smile appeared on my face. He grinned at me and gave me a small nod. I bit my lip to stop my smile from growing and gave a small nod back before Draco nudged me. I jumped and looked at him but he wasn’t looking at me. “Snape’s watching us rather closely, isn’t he?” I glanced over a at Snape who avoided my eyes almost instantly.
“Hm. Didn’t notice.” My eyes quickly drifted back to Ron who was smiling at me thoughtfully. I noticed Hermione look at him and the glance over at me. Her eyes seemed furious when she noticed he was watching me and she nudged him harshly but he merely waved her off. At this I let a full smile take over my face. I almost let out a laugh until the Headmaster’s voice came over the speakers of the Great Hall loudly.
“Good morning students! Hope everyone has had a hearty breakfast and is ready for a day of classes! Could I please have Taryn Cavanaugh join me in my office immediately, please! Thank you!” The Great Hall grew silent as all eyes shifted to me. I gritted my teeth slightly as I noticed Hermione smirk and all the Slytherin’s jokingly oohed and awed at me. I stood up and smiled gracefully. “See you lot in class.” They all waved and made jokes as I retreated from the table. I had a bad feeling Granger had been behind whatever this was about and I had an uneasy feeling.
Before I left the Great Hall I passed the Gryffindor table once more and saw that my sister was sitting next to Harry Potter comparing notes to something. As I got closer I saw Ron turn to me and smiled and I hesitated but grew confidence as Hermione shock me a nasty look. As I passed I turned around and walked backwards smiling at Ron. “See you in class, Ron?” He beamed at me and nodded as I could have sworn Hermione’s mouth dropped. I shot him one last smile before leaving the hall. Whatever Dumbledore wanted I hoped it wouldn’t take long, I couldn’t wait to see Granger’s face in Herbology.
Enjoy guys! -C

Servants of Insanity (Chapter Ten) Detention Confessions
I followed Draco slowly watching his feet cautiously knowing that the conversation I was going to start would probably not end well. I knew about his parents being death eaters as well as my own. Something I think they all thought I was too simple minded to see. I saw a lot more than anyone thought. Like both Draco and my sisters sudden interest in long sleeves. Draco lead me out to the Quidditch pitch and had me follow him to the closet they kept the spare brooms before turning around and handing me a little can of wax and a rag. “Snape said by hand” he said and I nodded and sat down crossed legged on the ground in the middle of the little closet and grabbed the first broom. It was quiet for a while as I decided to let him ask me his questions first. It was about ten minutes later when he sat across from me and stared at me until I looked up. “Yes Draco?” I asked and he smirked momentarily before his face changed into a more serious one. “Are you going to say yes to Dean?” He asked and I rolled my eyes. “Why do you care so much?” I asked and he shrugged. “Because I care about you Tobi” he said and I looked at him and sighed slightly. “Do you? Here I thought you cared about Taryn. You did date her a few years back remember?” I asked and he nodded. “Yes, I do. But that’s different. You being with him is dangerous” he said and I scuffed slightly. “And you and Taryn being death eaters is so bloody safe, right?” I snapped and his eyes widened. “Why would you…” he drifted off his lies with the look I sent him and he sighed. “How long have you known?” He asked and I shrugged as I ran the cloth down the handle of the room. “Since a few weeks before school. It wasn’t hard to figure out coming from a family of death eaters.” I said. “You can’t tell anyone-”” No shit Sherlock” I snapped cutting him off and he narrowed his eyes at me. “Oh, I’m not afraid of you Draco and I never have been and you know it” I said and he slumped back against the wall as we fell into silence. “And I’m not going to tell anyone, I’d rather my sister and you not be killed and all that rubbish” I said breaking the silence without looking at him. “So, you care about me” he said and I could hear the smirk in his voice. I set the broom I was done with on my opposite side and smiled at it. It looked nice. I grabbed another on and placed it in my lap. “I’ve always cared about you Draco.” I said quietly as I gently rubbed the wax on the second broom. I’d be here all night. I have about eight more to go and I was on my second one and each one took me about 30 minutes. “Why?” I looked up at him when he spoke and tilted my head slightly. “Why do you care about me Tobi?” He asked and I smiled slightly. “Because you’ve never been a jerk to me. I mean you kept your distance until I was like 15 or so but you’ve never been rude” I said and he smiled. “You are rather difficult to hate little Cavanagh” I shrugged “Hufflepuff remember” I said and he nodded. “Yeah but after punching Granger like that I think there is a little Slytherin in there” he said and I leaned back, forgetting the broom for the moment, and looked at him. “You want to know why I was put in Hufflepuff and not Slytherin?” I asked and he nodded. “Because I didn’t want to be in Slytherin” I said and he look at me strangely. I couldn’t tell if it was anger, confusion, disappointment or a mix of them all. “What’s wrong with Slytherin?” He asked and I rolled my eyes going back to the broom. “What isn’t wrong with you guys. You’re bloody douchebags” I said and now the look I got was confused. “Douchebag?” He repeated and I nodded. “Yeah, douchebag, you know an advanced form of a jerk. You guys act without thinking or you think too much, you invest so much time in being completely repulsive human being that it just comes out naturally, you treat people like they are the dirt on your bloody shoes when in reality they are better then you arseholes are” I snapped thinking back to the time when I watch Taryn picking on a Hufflepuff first year with Draco. “You really think of us like that. Of me like that?” He asked and I rolled my eyes. “Draco, you walk around with your nose stuck so far in the air I surprised you don’t get a nose bleed. Just because you have a surname people know doesn’t mean you have the right to treat people the way you do” I said and he looked away from me. “And to answer your question, no I’m not going anywhere with Dean.” I said and his scowl turned into a smile. “Realized you were better than him?” He asked and I shook my head. “No, I realized my sister was a death eater and him being associated with me would probably get him killed.” I said and his face dropped. “That and he was making out with Ginny Weasley and I’m nobodies second choice” I said and he smiled. “No, you are not” he said causing me to smile as I placed the second broom by the first. “I love Snape. He is my favorite teacher but this sucks” I said grabbing another broom. Draco pulled his wand from his coat pocket and flicked it towards the stack of brooms and they all lined up and he then pointed his wand at the wax and the cloth and they started cleaning the brooms themselves and I rolled my eyes. Yeah yeah lucky you for being 17, what am I supposed to do for my detention now?” I asked and he stood up and held out his hand for me. “Come along little Cavanagh” he said and I rolled my eyes. I placed my hand in his and he easily pulled me up to my feet. I came face to chest and looked up slowly at him. He reached up and pushed a strand of hair out of my face cause my heart to pick up. I won’t lie I have always like Draco. Even if he was a jerk. There was still something captivating about him. There always has been. So being this close to him made my stomach flutter a little. “Draco…” I said quietly and his hand slipped from my hair to cup my face gently and for a moment I thought he was going to kiss me but he pulled away almost having an internal debate with himself before stepping about three feet from me and shoving his hands in his pockets. “Come along Tobi” he said walking out of the closet. I sighed slightly before following him. Next, he had me polish the Quidditch balls and anything else I think he could have thought of for about three hours before I told him I needed a break. So, he stood next to me as I sat on the ground and let the golden snitch hover in my hand. The snitch was honestly my favorite part of the sport. I always wanted one. Not this one, Harry had almost swallowed it his first year and that’s gross. “You like the Golden Snitch, don’t you?” Draco asked breaking the two-hour long silence between us. I nodded with a smile and looked up at him. “Yes, I do” I said as it gently landed in my hand. I pushed myself up and put the snitch carefully. Back in its spot before looking at Draco. “Am I done Sir?” I asked mocking a curtsy and he smirked. “Yes” I nodded with a smile and unbuttoned my flannel shirt leaving me in a short white tank top and looked at him. “Well then, I bid you ado Mister Malfoy and I will see you tomorrow” I said and he nodded slowly as his eyes ran over me causing me to raise an eyebrow. His eyes met mine again and I shook my head. “Same old Draco” I said before leaning over and kissing his cheek before walking away from him. I knew. I knew so much better then to like Draco. He slept with anyone pretty much, or so the rumors said. He sure snogged a lot of girls that’s for sure. And I knew at one point he had a thing for Taryn but I don’t think I could ever want to be with him if he had actually been with her because that’s just weird. I was pulled back and I looked up at Draco. He had his body pressed up against mine and he gently pushed me against a wall and leaned his forehead on mine. I swallowed the lump in my throats and looked up. His blue grey eyes cutting into mine like ice. “Yes I was with Taryn, to shut everyone up. But she’s not the Cavanagh I want to be with” he said quietly before brushing his thumb across my lips and then walking away leaving me there against the wooden wall of the pitch trying to catch my breath. So, did that mean what I thought it meant? Did that mean that Draco, Draco Malfoy Slytherin Prince, actually like me, Tobi Cavanagh the Hufflepuff nobody? What?

Servants of Insanity (Chapter Nine) Painful Memories
I watched her walk away from me and wasn’t even really sure what to do at this point. Jilly had come to me thinking I knew what to say to Tobi to make her eat but obviously I’d only made the issue worse. I knew she was angry at me, and unfortunately there was nothing I could do about it. Sighing I made my way back to my room and settled in at my desk. I pet Jinx while I worked on my Potions homework. I glanced at the clock and realized it was almost time for detention. Walking over to my closet I grabbed a pair of skinny jeans and a t-shirt and tugged them both on. I grabbed a cute knitted pullover and then pulled on a pair of boots and left my room at the same time Draco was leaving the common room. “Ready for detention?”
He rolled his eyes at me and I grinned. “Hell, readier than you are. At least I can stand to be around Tobi for long periods of time…” He chuckled as I scowled at him and shoved him slightly. We walked down the hall in silence for a few minutes until he turned to me looking rather serious. “Who knows, maybe it won’t be as bad as you think, I mean, patrols with Cedric wasn’t.” I glanced at him momentarily before putting my eyes straight forward.
“I mean I guess it wasn’t horrible.” Out of the corner of my eye I watched him roll his eyes at me.
“You ever gonna be honest with me about that?” Freezing I looked up at him as he stared at me as if he knew something I didn’t. I opened my mouth to ask what he was talking about when he cut me off. “Taryn, I know about Cedric, or at least I’m fairly certain about it. You went from complaining every single day about having patrols with him to barely speaking his name. Your whole mood changed last year, you were always in a good mood, always looking for him in the halls, always tripping over yourself ready to go on patrols. You can’t possibly tell me something wasn’t going on with you two.”
I wasn’t even sure what to say. I hadn’t realized that Draco had paid that much attention to even notice things like that. I certainly wasn’t sure he’d even liked Cedric, and I was most surprised he hadn’t said anything last year when he had the chance. Sighing I shrugged and looked up into his eyes. “I mean, I don’t really know what we were. And I knew for a fact that my parents would kill me for even glancing in his direction, so I just kept my mouth shut and so did he. I’m sure his parents wouldn’t be too pleased with him speaking to a Cavanagh.”
His face softened and he stepped closer to me. “Anyone would be lucky to have your attention. Don’t sell yourself so short. I don’t think anyone really knew about you two. I heard rumors of him seeing someone but he was always very quiet about who, everyone just knew he wasn’t talking to girls anymore. And then I realized you weren’t really talking to guys either. And you were always excited to go to classes we had with him, and head to patrols. You were just…. happier.”
I smiled slightly because he was right. Last year was probably my happiest time at school. Everything just seemed to click and make sense finally. “And then he died.” I snapped out of it as Draco said this and looked up, locking eyes with him. “He died, and that entire mood of yours went away. You were reclusive and mean to people. You went right back to the Taryn I was used to, but worse. He brought out the best in you, and when he died, he brought out the worst.” I looked away from him, tears welling up in my eyes and cleared my throat.
“I have to go.” I walked away from him quickly. I could hear him calling my name from down the hall but I ignored him. It was overwhelming. I didn’t know that Draco had known about Cedric, that anyone had known other than us. And I was grateful he was such a good friend to notice all those things, but with all those things brought painful memories back that I didn’t want to remember. Things that I had suppressed for a year now because dealing with them was proving harder than I knew how to deal with currently.
I didn’t realize I had been wandering the castle aimlessly until I found myself in the hallway with the suits of armor. I looked around and a lump filled my throat when I found myself standing in front of one particular suit of armor. I wiped a stray tear that fell from my eyes and shook my head. I could practically hear our laughter filling the hall.
He’d just gotten done telling me a joke, a dumb one. But it worked, I’d had a horrible day, but he’d managed to get me in a fit of laughter. I was wiping tears from my eyes when I felt him grab my hand. My breath got hitched in my throat and my eyes found his. I opened my mouth to tell him it wasn’t a good idea because someone could catch us but he merely reached up before I could and put a finger to my lips. He grinned at me and I felt my lips form a smile. He squeezed my hand and let his finger drift away from my lips.
He looked like he wanted to say something but stayed quiet a moment longer. We just sat there, in the dimly lit hallway just staring into each other’s eyes. Finally, he seemed to gain his confidence. “Taryn?” I said a small hm under my breath and he leaned a little closer. “I-I think I might be in love with you. And if you don’t stop me, I’m going to kiss you.”
My eyes widened but I kept so quiet you could hear our breathing. He leaned a little closer and watched me the entire time, waiting for me to stop him. But I wouldn’t. When our lips were less than an inch apart I gave him a tiny smile and pushed our lips together. I could feel him smile into the kiss as he pulled me closer, his arms tightly locked around my waist. My hands slowly snaked around his neck securely.
It was perfect. Or…almost. Because a moment later I heard footsteps coming down the hall, and fast.
We released each other quickly and took a step away from each other right as Snape rounded the corner. “You two are dismissed. I’ll take over from here.” We both nodded and glanced at each other before we took off down the hall. We were both grinning like fools as we rounded the corner. He walked me all the way to my common room like the true gentleman that he was and smiled. “See you tomorrow? Big day.”
I smiled at him and nodded my head. “Of course.” He smiled sweetly before reaching down and giving me a peck on the lips before walking off down the hallway.
That night, would be his last. Because the very next day he competed in the final task of the Games. And he entered that maze but never came back out. Voldemort had killed him. Taken him away from me before I could tell him that I had loved him in return. I shuddered at the thought and rounded the corner seeing Ron in the trophy room waiting for me. “Hey, you okay?”
I nodded to him and we began dusting all of the trophies and shining them. After a while in silence he looked over to me very seriously. “I just wanted to say I’m sorry about the other night.” He cleared his throat as I looked up at him. “I-I shouldn’t have kissed you, I’m not sure why I did. But I just wanted to apologize because that wasn’t cool of me.”
Opening my mouth, I went to say something sarcastic and rude but seeing how genuine of an apology it was I seemed unable to do it. Shaking my head, I sighed and shrugged my shoulders at Weasley. “It’s fine. I appreciate the apology.” He blinked, obviously expecting a different reaction and then gave me a smile.
He seemed in good spirits and I could tell it would be a long night of polishing the trophies, but after earlier Ron’s good spirits didn’t seem to be the worst thing that could happen to my night.
Enjoy guys! Let us know what you think! -C

Servants of Insanity (Chapter Eight) Digging Holes
I took my seat and a moment later someone sat down next to me and I turned to see it was Dean. He flashed me a smile “now what are you doing in this class?” He asked and I shrugged. “Some of us are advanced in potions” I said quietly dropping my head slightly. I tucked a strand of my hair out of my face before tapping my quill again the desk slowly waiting for our new professor to enter the room. In all honesty I was going to miss Professor Snape. I love potions, unlike Taryn I was good at potions. Snape actually liked me and took be under his black wing and taught me everything he knew. I didn’t tell anyone but he had even given me a potions set for Christmas last year. A beautiful one made out of rosewood and diamonds. It was beautiful and I will keep it forever. So yeah, I would be very depressed going to potions and not having my favorite teacher teaching it. Instead I had professor Slughorn who I wasn’t at all interested in learning from. “Did you see what happened to Hermione this morning?” Dean asked snapping me out of my thoughts. I glanced up at Taryn sitting next to Draco who was glaring at me. No, he wasn’t glaring at me but at Dean. I tilted my head slightly looking at him and his eyes moved to me and instantly softened. I look down again pushing away the look in his eyes as it confused me greatly as with Dean sitting right next to me and the constant reminder of his invitation my brain was scrambled a little bit. “Yah I saw” I said a moment later and he smiled down at me. “She is one of your friends, right?” I shrugged as an answer as the doors opened and Slughorn walked in cause me to sigh. I already disliked him. Just for the specific reason that he wasn’t Snape. I’m pretty sure I’m the only non-Slytherin student he liked. Which made me glare at the back of Slughorn’s head unintentionally as he talked about what we were doing today. Which I wasn’t interested in. My eyes drifted around the class as everyone was gathering their stuff for their potion. I did the same and my eyes landed on Draco, he was standing with Taryn helping her and I smiled slightly before looking back down at my potion. We were brewing Draught of Living Death. Something I’ve done numerous times before when Snape was teaching me. He had me try by myself, then showed me the correct way he did it, made me do it again his way and then I had to repeat making it till I got it right. Since he has his way of doing it that was how I had to do it. So, I had to redo it a lot. But he never seemed to get annoyed which made me feel better. As I brewed my potion like Snape taught me, I was the first one done. I glanced around so see Hermione had at some point showed up and look frazzled, to say the least. My sister looked mad but I wasn’t sure if that was because of the draught or Hermione. Draco look amused at Taryn but otherwise concentrated on his potion. Dean looks like he had given up all hope in doing the potion but smirking at Seamus’ exploded as he was looking inside it. Everyone else’s was doing worse Harry was looking at me with a wide smile and I knew he was done. I raised an eyebrow as Slughorn walked over to him and dropped in a leaf and proceeded to brown nose up to Harry who had a wider smile then I thought possible. Someone stood next to me and I looked up to see Draco and before I could say anything he dropped an herb in my draught and watched it burned and died. “You were done first, I know you were. Why did you let Potter win?” He asked and I shrugged. “Because I don’t need Liquid Luck, I make my own luck.” I said before closing my book and shoving it inside my black bag. “Are you ready for detention tonight?” He asked and I nodded. I mainly was ready because of the amount of questions I had for him about them and “The Dark Lord” because I knew they were up to something. Over the summer something happened. My sister changed and I knew it. And I wanted to know why. “Good because I have a question for you” he said snapping me from my thoughts and I looked up at him to find him glaring at Dean who was glaring right back. I rolled my eyes at the both of them and slung my bag over my shoulder. “What is your problem with Dean?” I Snapple and his attention quickly dropped back to me and his eyes where wide. “I don’t like him, he is bad for you Tobi” he said and I rolled my eyes yet again and shoved past him. “Like you would know what’s good for me” I said before following Harry, Ron and Hermione out of the classroom. “So you have to give detention to Taryn tonight?” Harry asked Ron and I listened closely. “Good luck she is a vile little-”” Granger I will not hesitate to deck you in the mouth again if you talk about my sister” I snapped causing them all to stop as look at me. Hermione glared at me and I crossed my arms over my chest. “I thought Hufflepuff’s-” “We are every bit as loyal as you, my loyalty lies with my sister.  She may be older and in Slytherin but push me further and I will prove to you just how much not a snake I can be. “Just As you would give up everything for them-” I said pointing to Ron and Harry “I’d give up everything for my sister and to protect her. So last chance I hear a whisper of her name on your lips, those boils will be nothing compared to the hell you can expect from me” I glared my eyes at her before shoving past her, knocking her into the wall, and walking past all of them and Harry just shook his head at me. Once I was far enough away from them I let out the breath I didn’t realize I was holding and ran my hand threw my bangs, pushing them to the top of my head before making my way to Care of Magical Creatures, basically just pushing myself threw the rest of my day. I didn’t eat lunch, much like I didn’t touch my breakfast once I realized that my sister had been behind Hermione and the Boils issue. I walked into the great hall to see Jilly of all people talking to my sister and they both looked up at me at the same time. Jilly headed over to the table and my sister headed over to me. I raised an eyebrow as she gently grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the great hall and into the corridor to the right. Jilly said you haven’t eaten today and last night you barely touched your dinner meaning yesterday at breakfast with me was the last time you properly ate” she said and I raised an eyebrow at her “your point?” She seemed a little shocked that I didn’t disagree with her. “Why are you not eating Antonia-Phoebe?” I flinched at the use of my full name. Nobody but my family and Dumbledore knew my full name, not Draco not any of the professors. Nobody. Taryn was actually the first one to call me Tobi when we were kids because Antonia and Phoebe were both a mouthful. So, she somehow managed to mix Toni and the end of Phoebe to get Tobi and then our parents started calling me Tobi and it just stuck. My full name was reserved for when I was in an incredible amount of trouble. Which only happened once when I was like 12 and making potions in the basement and set it on fire. Completely by accident. My mother was furious though. My attention snapped back at Taryn as she lowers her voice slightly. “What’s going on with you Tobs?” She asked and I could hold back the scuff that escaped causing her to look at me confused. “I could as you the same thing Tar” I said before walking away from her and walking towards my common room. “Tobi, you need to eat!” She called and I turned around, walking backwards and threw up my hands “I seem to have LOST MY APPETITE” I yelled the last part before turning on my heel and stomping my way back to the common room and up to my room. I changed into a pair of yellow shorts and white long sleeve button up flannel shirt. I unbuttoned the first three buttons and rolled up the sleeves before pulling on my black converse, I got from a muggle shop in London, and sat down on my bed and glared at the wall across from me. I don’t know who I was madder at. Taryn, for acting like my mother, not that our mother would care Tar was her fucking pride and joy. Jilly, for telling my sister what was going on when it wasn’t any of her business, friend or not. Or myself for the fact that I wasn’t eating but I honestly just wasn’t hungry, well I had been tonight but now I was just making a point. My sister doesn’t control me and she sure as hell doesn’t call me Antonia-Phoebe like that. I didn’t do anything. If she wants to be mad at me for something I can call her out of being a Death Eater in front of everyone. Because I was about 85% positive she was one, as well as Draco. I tabbed my nails against the post of my bed and ran threw everything in my head. It was only the first day of school and I already managed to dig myself into a hole I had no idea how to get out of. When it was time for my detention I slowly made my way towards the great hall and sat down on the table right inside the door and waited. Eventually Draco walked in and smirked at me causing me to roll my eyes. “Ready Cavanagh?” He asked and I pushed myself off the table and landed silently on the ground. “Didn’t realism you were that short” he said and shoved him slightly. “Lead the way Malfoy.”

Servants of Insanity (Chapter Seven) Revenge Is Sweet
I made it halfway to the Slytherin common rooms when I turned a corner and slammed straight into Draco. He grabbed my arm to stop me from falling back and stared at me. “Are you alright?” I nodded quickly but winced in pain as my arm burned more fiercely. I could tell that Draco felt it too as he grabbed his left arm. “We should get going, he’s growing impatient.”
Nodding along with him we took off quickly. We made our way through the corridors silently and finally ended up at the front entrance. We pushed through the doors and made our way to the edge of the Forbidden Forest. I took a deep breath and glanced at Draco. He nodded at me confidently and I allowed my face to harder. We headed in quickly and went for a mile before coming to a clearing. The closer I got the less my arm hurt.
When we came to the clearing the pain stopped altogether. They were in a circle, the black hoods and masks only made it more real. I knew somewhere in this circle Draco and I’s parents stood, all too proud of us for what we’d done over the summer. I remember when Tobi had gone to Jilly’s for a week during the summer. I remembered my mother starting to act strange and my father constantly disappearing. And one day, when I came downstairs the hairs on my arms stood up, and goosebumps formed everywhere. I could sense something was wrong in the house. And when I found my parents in the study I’d also found the Dark Lord. He was ready to invade Hogwarts and he wanted mine and my sister’s help. I told him Tobi was to be left out of it, as long as she was left out of it I would do anything asked of me.
And here I was, standing in the middle of the Forbidden Forest staring at a group of Death Eaters and the Dark Lord himself. Draco grabbed my hand and pulled me farther in and we both knelt in front of Him. Finally, he spoke. “Get up, children. We need to talk.” Draco and I stood up fully and I stared down at Voldemort’s feet, not willing to look him in the eyes. Draco merely seemed interested in making sure I was okay which I was thankful for.
“This year is the year. I plan to overtake Hogwarts and that will only work with the cooperation of you two. But I have a task for both of you, and it’s the most vital of the entire plan?” I glanced at Draco who’d gone ghost white. Draco was an obvious choice for Voldemort, but not in my eyes. He was far more fragile and loving than everyone knew, and he wasn’t meant for a life like this.
I cleared my throat and looked up at the Dark Lord, trying to maintain my hard face and confidence in myself. “What do you need?” He gave me an evil smile that made my skin crawl. It was a proud smile that made my heart ache. It wasn’t ever supposed to be like this. But if this kept Tobi safe I would do anything.
“Young Taryn, you have deeply surprised me thus far. Your confidence radiates from you, and you’ve never batted an eye when I’ve asked you to do something. You’ve shown much promise to me thus far, and I consider you a great asset to have. What do you think of Harry Potter and his army of fools?” He stared at me, waiting for me to falter under his gaze. I realized this was an important question to him, and my life probably depended on my answer.
I shook my head, and let out a soft laugh. Some of the Death Eaters shifted feet at this. “What do I think of Harry Potter. I think he’s a babbling idiot, who up to this point has been struck with dumb luck to live this long. People lay their faith blindly into a child who knows no more than his own selfish ways. And as for his army? I feel sorry for them. They’re on the losing side of a war that’s coming and putting their faith in someone like Harry Potter will get them killed. That’s what I think, my Lord.”
He let out a gleeful laugh and clapped his hands together. “So beautifully said, my dear! You’ve made me proud.” I faked a smile to him and he turned to two of the Death Eaters. “Nymeria and Nicholas, you should be proud of your daughter. She will excel greatly.” I glanced over at my parents who flicked their wands and their masks disappeared.
“I am very pleased with her. She’ll do us proud.” My father’s voice filled the silence and my mother gave me a smile, but there was sadness behind it. I knew this wasn’t the life she’d wanted for her children, which is why I was glad it was just me. This would break Tobi, and I couldn’t have that. He would kill her and I wouldn’t allow that to happen.
“Draco. Taryn. My request is as simple as this. I need Dumbledore out of the picture. He’s a problem and I want him gone.” At this Draco looked up in horror and before I’m sure he knew what he was saying his spoke loudly.
“Y-You want us to kill, Dumbledore?” His voice was full of shock but I wasn’t so shocked. I knew eventually Voldemort would ask too much of us. And I knew it would be bad when he did. I had been preparing for this from the beginning.
Voldemort looked almost angered by Draco’s response but his face seemed to lighten when I spoke up. “Fine. Consider it done.” Draco looked over at me with wide eyes and I locked my jaw. This was the last thing I wanted to do. If anyone could defeat Voldemort it was Dumbledore, but disobeying Him was not an option. “I’ll do it myself, if I have to.” I looked up at Voldemort to see him crack a smile once more.
“Very good, that’s all I needed to see you both for. I do not wish it done right away, I want you to be sure of your moment of attack. Because after he’s out of the way my Death Eaters will invade the school and take over. We’ll need an in for that. Which you’ll need to help us with as well. But for now, I want you to be sure you can do what’s asked of you.” I nodded and glanced at Draco whose jaw was still wide open. “You’re dismissed. We have other business to discuss.”
Draco stood in fear still so I grabbed his arm and we took off. We walked quickly back to the castle and we were halfway back when he froze and grabbed my arm. “Taryn, you weren’t serious, were you? You’re not really going to try and kill Dumbledore, are you?” I turned around and stared into his eyes before I nodded.
“Yes. I was serious. I still am. You don’t get it, do you? He’s going to kill us if we don’t do this. No wasn’t an answer he was willing to hear. And if this is what I have to do to keep Tobi and my family safe, this is what I’ll do. With or without your help.”
I turned around quickly and walked off towards the castle. He soon caught up with me and we walked in silence back into the castle. I walked past the Great Hall, not hungry for lunch. We made it to the hallway closest to the Slytherin house and I sighed. “I need to lie down, I’ll see you later.” I walked off quickly and made my way into the common room.
I went into my room and laid down. I wasn’t truly tired until I laid down but then I was overwhelmed with exhaustion. I closed my eyes and before I knew it was sound asleep. I only woke up a few hours later to someone opening my door. It was dark out, and I wondered if I’d missed dinner. “Draco…what’s going on?”
He seemed agitated about something as he paced around my room. “Your sister was talking to Dean Thomas tonight. Apparently, he asked her out. Why does she even bother associating herself with guys like him, and I know she talks to Potter and some of the other Gryffindors. Do your parents know about that?” I rubbed at my eyes and glanced around the room. If he was here he was probably coming to wake me up for dinner.
“No, and they don’t need to. It’s a phase that she’ll grow out of. What’s with you lately?” He shook his head and muttered to himself before turning to me and announcing it was dinner time. He waited for me to change shoes because the hells were killing me and we went to dinner. I spotted Granger there and my anger boiled up once more.
After eating I caught up with Blaise in the hallway and smiled at him. “Blaise, my good friend, you’re good at potions, aren’t you?” He grinned at me and glanced around.
“What do you need, T?” I smiled at him and as we walked back to the common room I explained my plan. He said that would be easy and he’d get to work. I grinned to myself as I got ready for bed that night. Granger would pay for what she’d done. And the best part was with Blaise’s help, it couldn’t be traced back to me at all. She’d know who did it, but she wouldn’t be able to prove it. I’d never been a huge wiz at potions.
I went to bed that night too excited to wake up the next morning. I woke up early and went to the fifth floor and took a long shower. I got myself all prettied up for the day and woke up Draco. I waited for him to get ready and then we headed down to the Great Hall. I loaded my plate up and watched as people trickled in. My sister made her way to her table with her friend and soon most of the students were there. I glanced over at Blaise who shot me a wink and a nod letting me know that it was done.
I ate my breakfast and smiled to myself widely when I heard a scream across the Great Hall. Everyone looked up quickly to find the source, but I knew where to look. I looked over at the Gryffindor table to see Hermione standing up and she was covered in disgusting looking boils. The entire Slytherin table burst out laughing and most everyone else did too. Draco nudged me laughing hysterically and I shrugged. I felt eyes on me and glanced over to see Tobi staring at me. I could tell she disapproved but it was fine, she’d get over it. Hermione had had it coming since day one, and she was lucky a few boils was all she got.
Hermione looked over at me laughing and screamed as Ron and Harry grabbed her and wheeled her out of the Great Hall, headed to the Hospital Wing no doubt. I laughed even louder when I waved at them and Draco, Pansy, and Blaise joined in. We all finished our breakfast and ironically enough headed to our Potions class that we had with Gryffindor. I walked with Draco and smiled wickedly at Potter. I passed behind him and shrugged. “Shame what happened to your friend, Potter. She should probably be more careful with her pumpkin juice next time, hm?” Draco laughed loudly as we took our seats. I noticed Tobi enter the class and realized she would probably be in a few of our classes because she was advanced. I smiled at her and she returned the smile before sitting down. I noticed that Granger never made it to class which made me snicker. But I did notice that Ron kept staring at me, but he didn’t seem angry and I wondered why.

Servants of Insanity ((Chapter Six)) Questions
I stared after her with narrowed eyes and my hands clenched tightly. I hadn't really thought threw the idea of hitting Granger, it just kind of happened when she kept yelling at my sister and Draco was holding Taryn back so she couldn't do anything. My body reacted before my brain caught up with it and before I knew what I did Granger was bloody and crying. And there was a bit of satisfaction as I looked at Taryn who looked at me proudly. But at the same time, I didn't enjoy the idea of actually hurting someone, no matter the reason. And now to make things worse I had to have Detention, for a month, with Draco. Whom i was still mad at after his comment on my iPod.
I slowly made my way down the corridor fiddling with the hem of my shirt and made my way to the Hufflepuff common room, ignoring the looks as I went. Once I was in the common room everyone who was in there turned to look at me and i rolled my eyes slightly.
Hannah Abbott perked up of the couch and looked at me accusingly. Great, this is not how I wanted to spend this year, with the Hufflepuff prefect up my arse about every little thing I did and Hannah is one person who never liked me. The fact that she disliked Taryn only made her hate me more. And the fact that I decked Granger in the face probably didn't help my case any. But no amount of mental preparation could have prepared me for the words that came out of her mouth.
"I knew you should have been in Slytherin" she said and I tilted my head slightly. "Keep talking Abbott and I will confirm your theory." I snapped. It wasn't like me to act like this. I was the one that avoid confrontation not the one that seeked it out, but I just wasn't in the mood for it today and now with the idea that my sister was a Death Eater my mood dropped greatly and I wasn't above punching someone else in the face to satisfy the irritation I felt. Hannah stepped back slightly and i shoved past her harshly and made my way up to my room and sat down on the bed twirling my wand in between my fingers as I stared at the wall as my mind went a million miles and hour.
Taryn was acting different she had been for the majority of the summer, more angry, more impulsive...more secretive. Something was going on and if she really was a Death Eater, the only other people that would know would be our parents and Draco. I bit my lip slightly and made a mental note to ask him in my detention with him tomorrow.
After a while I made sure that I had everything unpacked as well as having everything ready for my classes tomorrow before making my way outside. I walked the grounds ignoring the critical looks i was getting. When everything went down with Granger it was mid morning so naturally everybody in the entire school had been down in the great hall.
I wasn't entirely sure where I was going all i knew was that I didn't want to sit in my bed all day but I also didn't want to have to deal with anyone at all. Not even my sister. I just wanted to be on my own away from everyone. At least for a little while.
And that lasted for about an hour before someone sat down next to me and looked to see Harry. I sighed slightly and rested my head on his shoulder. Despite all the issues he has with my sister and Draco, Harry has never blamed me for it. He was actually a close friend and we grew closer when Cedric died. He wrote to me over the summer and everything.
"Sorry about punching Hermione." I said quietly as he rested his head on top of mine. "She is pretty upset about it" he said and I smiled slightly. "Well tell her to consider herself lucky all she got was a punch, if Taryn-" "She knows that" he said with a slight chuckle causing me to smile slightly. "Taryn looked about ready to kill" he said and I nodded. "Yeah, she seems like that a lot lately to be honest." I said.
"Do you think she joined?" he asked and i shrugged. Honestly I did, but I wasn't going to tell him that.  "I don't know. I hope not" he nodded and left it at that and we fell into silence. It was a comfortable silence. We talked a bit more before Ron came down looking for him and sent me a look, not a nasty look more of a sympathetic one either. "Tobi" he said with a small nod that I returned. "Ronald" I said and he pulled a face causing me to snicker and Harry to shake his head before standing up. "I'll see you later Tobs" Harry said and I nodded and sent them both a small wave before turning back to look out over the Black Lake with a sigh.
I gave myself another half an hour to talk myself into going and talking to Draco. But when I got to the Great Hall both Draco and Taryn were nowhere to be found and I narrowed my eyes slightly before walking over tot he Slytherin table. "Blaise have you see Malfoy or my sister?" I asked and he shook his head. "No baby Cavanagh, I haven't" he said with a smile. I rolled my eyes before turning on my heel and walking away.
I made my way out of the great hall and saw my sister walking towards the Slytherin common room and I sighed slightly before turning around and running directly into Dean and almost sending us both to the floor as well as almost breaking my ankle in the process.
He wrapped his arms around me tightly and held me up causing me to smile as I looked up at him. "Thanks Dean" I said and he smiled. "Anytime Beautiful, anytime"
I felt a small blush rush to my cheeks as I slowly pushed away from him. I had been used ot the compliments from Dean. He'd been saying them since my first year. And he had asked me out numerous times. I always tell him no, I'm not sure why either. Dean is a good friend but he just, wasn't my type.
"Would you like to accompany me to the village the first weekend we are allowed to go? Yes, on a date" he said as I went to open my mouth and I smiled slightly and shuffled slightly. "Just let me know" he said bending down and kissing me cheek before walking into the Great Hall. I rolled my eyes slightly and walked towards the direction my sister went only to be stopped by Draco.
"Hey I was just looking for you" I said and he narrowed his eyes. "What did Thomas want?" he all but spat at me and I rolled my eyes. "He asked me out" I said "What did you say?" he asked and I narrowed my eyes.
"Where did you and Taryn disappear to?" I asked and his face immediately changed and I tilted my head. "Answer my question and I shall answer yours" I said and he shook his head. "It doesn't matter Tobi" he said and I smirked slightly. "Then you don't need to worry about me and Dean now do you" I said before turning on my heel and walking away from him.
I'd bug him more about it tomorrow when we didn't have to worry about someone hearing the conversation, that way he was more willing to answer my questions.
And he will answer my questions, all of them.

Servants of Insanity (Chapter Five) Something Wicked This Way Come
The ceremony was like every other year, we clapped when a new Slytherin was added and ignored everyone else. When the food came I ate slowly and when it was all over it was up to Draco and me to show the first years to our dormitories. We stood outside the portrait to our underground hideout and I turned to the first years. “The password is ‘serpents bite’. You are not under any circumstance to tell anyone outside of Slytherin this password. If I find out you’ve done so I will dole out severe punishment as well as docking our house points, am I understood?” They all nodded in unison and I uttered the password loudly watching as the portrait swung open revealing the entrance.
We walked down the step and into the dimly lit common room and I turned to Draco. “Take over for me, I have patrols tonight with Weasley until Snape takes over for us.” He nodded and I patted him on the shoulder before walking back out of the common room. The portrait closed behind me and I headed towards the front entrance. I rolled my eyes when I approached to see Weasley already waiting for me, his arms crossed and one foot tapping.
“There you are, ready?” I rolled my eyes again and walked past him starting the patrol. I had always found patrols to be boring, until Cedric that is. Talking to him made the time pass quickly, and half of the time, I didn’t want the time to end. “Sooo…we just aren’t going to talk this entire time?”
Growling under my breath I turned to see him beside me. “What exactly is there to speak about, Weasley? I don’t want to be here and neither do you.”
“Well…you can call me Ron, first off. And I actually don’t mind patrols. I’m not exactly thrilled they’re with you but I can get over that if you can.” Gritting my teeth, I turned my head straight and continued to walk in silence for a moment. “You used to patrol with Cedric Diggory, didn’t you?”
At the mention of his name my entire legs wanted to lock up and my throat swelled. I focused heavily on my breathing and keeping my face straight as I turned to Ron. “Yes. Your point?” He shrugged slightly and let out a small breath.
“I dunno, just figured if you can get over doing patrols with him you could eventually get over doing them with me, that’s all.” Shaking my head slightly I stopped and turned to him quickly.
“Don’t go around comparing yourself to him, Weasley. You are a quarter of the man Cedric was.” At this Ron’s eyes went wide but after a moment turned soft and he cleared his throat.
“I wasn’t trying to compare myself to him…. I was just saying. So, you were his friend then?” I glared at him a moment before I started walking down the hallway once more.
“If you’d like to call it that, sure. We were friends. He’s the only friend I have and ever will have outside of the Slytherin house.” Ron caught up quickly to me and nodded at my statement.
“He was a good guy. Helped Harry a lot during the games, I don’t think he would have made it through without Ced’s help.” I nodded, pretending to listen as my mind drifted to the night that Cedric pulled me behind a suit of armor and kissed me. Cedric had been my first real kiss, and if Snape hadn’t come walking down the hall it would have been perfect.
“I guess I never really thought someone like you would have a friend outside of Slytherin.” I paused momentarily struck by what he’d said and turned.
“What do you mean, someone like me?” At this he realized he’d offended me and began backtracking heavily.
“I-I mean, look at you. You’re hands-down the most popular girl in school. And you’re basically the Queen of Slytherin. You don’t really come off as the type who’d have friends outside of Slytherin. And you’re not very friendly…sometimes.” I stared at him for a bit before being unable to help myself I cracked a smile.
“The Queen of Slytherin, huh?” He realized I had smiled and began grinning like a fool. He nodded to what I’d said and I nodded. “Interesting. I always thought I’d be the Princess.”
Chuckling slightly, he shook his head. “Nah, you’ve definitely grown up from a Princess.” I smiled slightly but looked away quickly. I hated to admit it but he wasn’t horrible company to keep. We walked in silence for a few moments before I glanced over and realized he was deep in thought. He opened and closed his mouth a few times but finally turned to me and blurted it out. “I heard a rumor that your parents were Death Eaters.”
I froze and stared at him for a long time before I exploded. “How is that any of your business, and how dare you not only ask but accuse! I heard you had an idiot for a father and a busy body for a mother but you don’t see me going around asking if your dad is an absolute moron like yourself! Buzz off, Weasley.” I stormed off at this but I heard him following quickly behind me.
“Wait! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to say it, it just kind of came out!” He grabbed my arm and I stopped but yanked it out of his grasp. We stared at each other for the longest time before my face slowly softened and he gave me a small smile. But something overtook his face. Before I knew what was happening he’d gently grabbed my face and smashed his lips against mine. I was so overwhelmed at first, I didn’t know what to do but then realized what was happening.
It dawned on me that this was my first kiss since Cedric, and this made my heart ache. I yanked away and before I truly knew what I was doing my arm cocked back before springing forward quickly and punching Ron square in the nose. I heard and felt the crunch of his nose breaking under the force of my punch and I took a few steps back as I touched my lips. He had no right to take a kiss from me. It wasn’t welcomed and I quite honestly wasn’t ready to kiss someone other than Cedric. It somehow felt like a betrayal even though he’d been gone almost a full year now. He’d meant something to me. Even if nobody but us knew, even if it was completely ludacris and out of bounds for both of us.
Right at this moment Snape rounded the corner. He stopped as he tried to take in the scene. Ron was on the ground, clutching his nose for dear life as blood seeped through his fingers and was everywhere, on the ground, his shirt, and even my fist. My mouth hung agape as I waited for Snape to yell at one of us. Ron quickly got up and shot me a look before turning to Snape. “I-I ran into a wall.” Snape stared between the two of us and I avoided eye contact. I knew that he knew Ron was lying but who was I to throw myself under the bus.
“For God’s sake, Weasley, could you be any clumsier?” He shot me a look before turning his evil gaze back to Ron. “Well, don’t stand there like a blundering idiot, get yourself to the Hospital Wing!” At this Ron took off, I got the feeling he didn’t want to spend any more time in Snape’s presence than he had to.
Snape and I stared at each other for a moment before he cleared his throat. “Well…I’ll take over patrols now. Get to bed.” I nodded and scurried away quickly before he could say anything else. I made my way quickly to the Slytherin common rooms. The fire was lit but it was so late no one else was awake. I made my way into my room. Prefects got their own rooms which was a blessing. I sat on the edge of my bed and thought through the night. I touched my lips once more and couldn’t stop thinking of Cedric.
I was driving myself mad when I shook my head and realize I needed to keep myself distracted. I spent the next hour unpacking my trunk and getting myself ready for bed. I climbed into bed and tried desperately to think of anything except Cedric but my thoughts quickly drifted to Ron. I wondered why he had kissed me. I must have fallen asleep trying to figure it out because I woke up to someone pounding on my door. I gasped and practically fell out of bed. I quickly covered myself with a robe and opened the door to see Draco dressed and ready for the day, although his hair was messy. “Morning sunshine, get dressed and come get breakfast with us.”
Yawning loudly, I turned around, leaving the door open for him to enter and walked straight to my closet. I rummaged through a couple things before putting the outfit together. I selected a crisp white skirt, and a baby pink crop top. I grabbed a floral pull-over and then grabbed a pair of tan wedge heels. I came back out laying the outfit on my bed. I turned to Draco lazily and sighed. “Are you just going to stand there watching?”
He rolled his eyes but challenged me with a smirk. I smirked back and shrugged. “Suit yourself, Malfoy. I’m not easily embarrassed.” I grabbed the bottom of my night shirt and pulled it over my head before he quickly turned pink and turned around. I knew for a fact Draco had never looked at me like that but he had his bravado to maintain. I changed quickly and got my heels on before quickly going to my small bathroom. I brushed through my hair letting it cascade down my shoulders and did my make-up quickly. When I was done I smiled at myself in the mirror. I looked damn good.
I headed out and Draco and I made our way down to the Great Hall. Barely anyone was there and the majority were Slytherins or Gryffindors. I spotted Ron with Potter and Granger. His nose was mended but he still had a huge bruise around his nose and one of his eyes was slightly swollen. I avoided looking at him as we sat down at our table. Draco immediately started to load up his plate but I took my time. I put some bacon and toast on my plate and filled my cup with coffee. I added copious amounts of cream and sugar and sipped at it as Pansy and Blaise droned on about their summers.
I was sipping on my coffee when the table went radio silent. I glanced at Pansy who was glaring behind me. Marcus and Blaise both looked as though they might faint and when I glanced at Draco his mouth was practically drooling. I opened my mouth to ask what the hell they were all staring at when a voice spoke up behind me. “Can I sit with you guys?”
I would recognize my sister’s voice from anywhere. I turned around with a smile on my face when Pansy spoke behind me. “This is the Slytherin table, little Cavanagh.” Tobi’s face fell momentarily when I gritted my teeth and whirled around to face Pansy.
“First off, her name is Tobi. Second off, you mouth off to her again and you’ll find yourself in the Hospital Wing choking up slugs for the next week. You disrespect her again and I’ll come for you, Parkinson.” Pansy’s face practically turned white as I turned back to face my sister who was grinning ear to ear. “Of course, you can sit here.” I turned to Blaise and waved my hand. “Scoot down.”
He moved quickly making room for Tobi who shot him a smile before squeezing in beside us. I pushed a plate towards her and gave her a stern look that she knew mean to eat something. She hardly ever ate these days and it worried me. She started to load her plate before Draco began snickering. “I heard Weasley spent the night in the Hospital Wing.” At this I froze, a piece of bacon halfway to my mouth. Tobi shot me a look but I kept my composure. “Wonder how that happened…” At this Draco looked over at me and I could feel my cheeks flushing a scarlet red.
“Who knows, the kid is a klutz. I’m sure he just ran head first into something gawking at Granger.” He smirked at me but kept eating his food. We were in the middle of a conversation about how idiotic it was we had to take Defense Against the Dark Arts when I felt someone shove my shoulder from behind. I froze and instantly my hand twitched for my wand. Everyone at the table stare behind me as if the person had lost their mind. The entire school knew better than to fuck with Draco or myself. I turned slowly and was shocked to see Hermione Granger behind me, shaking angrily.
My jaw was locked as I stood up slowly and balled my hands into fists. “Granger, you must have lost your fucking mind to think you could lay your filthy Mudblood hands on me and get away with it!” The entire Great Hall grew quiet with the tension in the air. At the word Mudblood Granger grew redder in the face.
“I know what you did, Taryn. He won’t tell Harry or I the truth but we know that you did it! How dare you lay a hand on him. I ought to teach you a lesson.” I burst out laughing at this and was about to insult her when she hauled out and shoved me. I stumbled back and almost fell but caught myself in the nick of time. I let out a growl and barreled towards her when a pair of muscular arms grabbed me and held me back. I was screaming at Granger when Tobi stood up and before anyone could stop her had decked Granger in the face. I gasped, and then began laughing as Hermione grasped her cheek and began shrieking.
Tobi turned to me and gave me a proud look, but the laughter stopped all too quickly when we heard a stern voice behind us. McGonagall’s angry voice filled the Great Hall. “Malfoy, Granger, both of the Cavanagh’s’! To Dumbledore’s office at once!” Granger was now crying as she realized the trouble she was in and we all marched to Dumbledore’s office, McGonagall in tow. She burst through the door with all four of us following and explained to him what had happened.
At this we each took turns telling our sides of the story. Then Dumbledore called Ron into the office with all of us. His face was pale as he entered the office and I smirked at the bruise on his face. Granger stared angrily at me. Dumbledore turned to Ron and smiled. “Dear Ron, could you enlighten us on what happened to your face, please?” He glanced at me and for a moment I thought he was about to tell the entire room he’d kissed me and gotten punched, but his face softened as he turned back to Dumbledore and shrugged.
“I ran into a wall last night on patrols. I wasn’t paying attention and that’s my own fault.” Dumbledore stared at him for a long moment before turning his attention to me. I smiled sweetly at him and shrugged.
“See, he tells the truth. Next time, Granger, I wouldn’t go around telling everyone a girl beat up Weasley unless he wanted that to be the story he told. A little embarrassing for him, don’t you think?” I shot her a look and her hands balled into fists but Dumbledore interrupted our little glare-off.
“You’ll all be receiving detention. Either for lying, hitting someone, or being involved at all. Tobi, you will be doing detention with young Mr. Malfoy. Hermione will be serving detention in the library. And you, Ms. Cavanagh will be serving detention with Mr. Weasley. I’m sure after this we’ll all be able to find a happy solution to our problems next time?” I gritted my teeth hard as we all realized this would be our lives for the next month. “Be glad that’s the only punishment I feel like doling out today. I could have all of your Prefect badges, Quidditch broomsticks, and any other extracurricular activities you all so choose to participate in.”
At this we all grew quiet. I’d take a month’s worth of detention any day over losing being a Prefect and Quidditch. We all grew silent, all of us waiting to be dismissed. But I was shocked when Dumbledore spoke next. “Can I have a moment alone with the Cavanagh sisters, please?” Tobi and I shared a look as everyone stood up and exited the office. Dumbledore interlaced his fingers together as he stared across his desk at both of us. Tobi wiggled in her chair under his gaze but I stayed firmly still and stared him down.
“You two ladies are exceptionally bright, and have everything going for you. Shall I spend my year worrying about you two?” Tobi opened her mouth to answer, no doubt with a polite response when I spoke over her.
“I can assure you your time is better spent elsewhere, Headmaster.” I said the last word dripping with sarcasm and contempt. Tobi glanced at me with wide eyes but I was in the middle of a stare-off with Dumbledore. His eyes softened but mine remained hard. “And as for my sister, she needs only me to look after her.” Dumbledore nodded and smiled.
“I can see you love her very much, I only wish the best for both of you.” I opened my mouth to answer when a sharp, burning pain ran up my left arm. I let out a soft gasp and gripped my forearm with my right hand. My dark mark hidden with a spell, but the feeling of it burned brightly. It could only mean one thing; the Dark Lord was very near and calling to me. I sucked in the pain and looked back up at the Headmaster who had his eyes glued to my bare forearm. Tobi too was staring at me until he spoke.
“Young Tobi, may I have a word with your older sister, please?” I avoided her eyes as she nodded at the Headmaster and stood up muttering about being right outside. She left, quietly shutting the door behind her and for many moments Dumbledore and I sat in silence. “Taryn, I’ve had my eye on you since your arrival here. From the beginning, you’ve been one of the brightest in your class, rising to every challenge that’s come your way. Rising to the top of your class and the highest of ranks on the Slytherin Quidditch team. Yet, I worry about you. You walk around as though there is a darkness that follows you, at times, consumes you. I worry this will lead you to make choices you otherwise wouldn’t, choices that could put yourself in harm’s way. I believe I can help you, if only you allowed me to do so.”
I stared at him for the longest time before a smile cracked on my face. It was written all over his face that he truly believed the words he spoke. He truly believed he could help me. But I was too far gone to be helped. “Headmaster, with all due respect. Some people can’t be helped. And your time is better served with those who can.” I stood up quickly and headed towards the door when he spoke again.
“Anyone can be helped, Taryn. Anyone who seeks that help out.” I froze for a moment, thinking about what he’d said. I slowly turned and stared at him.
“You truly believe that? That anyone can be helped?” He nodded slowly, as if to make me understand what he was saying. I gritted my teeth and spoke again. “What about Voldemort, sir? Can he be helped?” At this his face turned ashen, it was obvious I had caught him completely off guard. He opened his mouth and closed it a few times before his face turned grim.
“No. I don’t believe he can. Voldemort is too far gone to be helped.” I nodded as if to make my point but he spoke softly. “But you, Taryn, you are not too far gone to be helped. You merely need to block the darkness out and choose to let the light in.” I stared at him for the longest time as my left forearm continued to burn. A lump formed in my throat because I wished I could believe him, wished things weren’t as they were. But I’d made my choice.
“As I said, Headmaster. Your time is better served with those that can be helped, those who want your help. Someone like Tobi.” We stared at each other a moment more, me desperately begging him to watch her after I no longer could before I walked out of his office. As promised, Tobi was waiting for me when I left. I tried to walk past her down the corridor but she grabbed me.
“You owe me answers, Taryn. I punched someone for you today! And now you’re acting all weird. What’s going on?” She stared at me and by the way she kept glancing at my left arm I could tell she had a few theories. She was getting close to finding out, but she wasn’t ready yet. I had kept her out of this loop for a reason, and for now, she needed to stay there.
I reached over and pushed her bangs out of her eyes, letting my hand linger on her cheek. “Tobi, I appreciate what you did this morning. You didn’t have to, but I appreciate it. Granger was mistaken, and she was angry. I could have handled her myself, in fact, I will be handling her. But you don’t need to worry about that.”
I turned to leave but she grabbed my arm again tighter this time. “Taryn…. have you done something? Something unspeakable?” When I turned to look her in the eyes I knew what she was asking me. And I yearned to tell her. But it wasn’t time.
“Tobi, I need you to leave this be, okay? I’ve made some choices, some I’m not proud of. But I’ve made it this far, and I’ll continue on.” I stared deeply at her, willing her to understand. “Tobi, I love you. And I will do whatever it takes to keep you safe, from anyone that wishes you harm. Don’t worry about me, I’ve got myself under control.” She stared at me but I could see the curiosity burning in her eyes. I smiled. “Enjoy the rest of your day, classes start tomorrow and we probably have detention too. Enjoy your last day of freedom. I have some things I need to do. See you around?” She nodded and I walked off quickly to find Draco. If my arm was burning his was too, and this wouldn’t mean anything good.
I really hope you guys enjoy this! Let us know how we’re doing! -C

Servants of Insanity (Chapter Four) Bad Ideas
I watched as she walked away and shifted uncomfortably under the gaze of my house mates, and just about everyone in the entire Great Hall. I bit down on my bottom lip and my attention turned to Draco who was looking back at me. I raised an eyebrow and he shrugged slightly causing me to let out a frustrated sigh before sitting down next to Jilly. I pretty much just zoned out the entire Sorting ceremony and once it was done and everything else was done the food appeared on the tables and I shuffle slightly before standing up and quickly making my way out the door. I really didn’t feel like eating right now. I managed to get out the doors before Taryn looked up so she didn’t see me. Once I was far enough away I slowed down and shoved my hands in the pocket of my robes.
I glanced around to see if anyone was around and when I deemed it safe enough I reached deeper into my pocket and pulled out the little iPod shuffle I had and unwrapped the headphones. I slid the headphones in my ears before turning it on and pushing play.
Normally, we aren’t allowed to have Muggle objects at school, not like this at least. But Dumbledore had made an exception for me in my first year because I was isolated and alone and I guess he worried about me, or something like that. The only person other than him that knew about it was Taryn and that’s because she is the one that bought it for me the time we were in London on our own.
Muggle shops were very different from ours, and the only thing that had caught my eyes was a dress and the iPod. I didn’t have enough for both. Or at least I thought I didn’t. It wasn’t until last year I found out she had given me hers. I thought she had bought me the one in the shop because she had one, but she had given me hers and that made it mean so much more to me. So, Taryn gave it to me so when I was all alone in Hufflepuff she was still with me in a way. And that meant the world to me. Hufflepuff was lonely without my sister.
I never did understand why I was in Hufflepuff until my third year, well in all honesty I still don’t know. When I asked Dumbledore why the Hat had taken me from my sister and made my family all but disown me at first all he had told me was because I had the traits of every house, mostly that of Hufflepuff and Slytherin. The Hat went with Hufflepuff because of the kindness and restraint I have as opposed to my sister. I still didn’t fully believe it. But I stopped questioning it.
“Clair De Lune” quietly drifted through the headphones and a small smile formed on my lips as I walked. As the song ended I heard footsteps behind me and wheeled around with my wand pointed directly at the chest of Draco. I slowly dropped my arm and ran my hand through my bangs pushing the away from my eyes. “Are you bloody insane?!” I asked throwing my hands up in the air and he smiled slightly.
“That is the second time today that a Cavanagh has had her wand pointed at me, and here I thought we were friends.” He said and I snorted slightly shoving my wand back in my pocket.
“Maybe you should make yourself known when walking behind someone.” I said and his smiled dropped.
“I did, Tobi. I called your name, twice actually. And once I called your full name,” He said and I flinched slightly.
“One time I get yelled at by my mum around you and you never forgot my middle name.” I said and his smiled returned for a moment but then it faded.
“Is this why you didn’t hear me?” he asked grabbing one of my headphones and gently pulling it out of my ear. “What is this Muggle junk?” he asked and I shoved his hands off my headphone quickly and glared, something I don’t think he has ever seen because he stepped back slightly.
“Shove off, Malfoy.” I snapped before walking away from him.
“Tobi, wait!” he said but I ignored him and stomped my way down the hall towards the Hufflepuff common room.
“Pig sticks.” I muttered causing the picture to swing open to the entry way to the Hufflepuff basement. I glanced around and sighed in contentment. The basement/common room was around and inviting to walk into. Normally you could see the grass and the flowers seeping in through the circular windows along with the sunlight during the day. However, right now the moonlight shined through, which was equally as beautiful. My eyes traveled around the room, to all the plants hanging from the ceilings and sitting on the tables all around the room, even next to the black and yellow chairs and couches placed randomly. It was beautiful. One thing Hufflepuffs, myself included, were good with…plants.
Our common room, much like that of Slytherin’s was below the ground, theirs much more than ours but still. It was nice and much easier to sleep in them than the towers like Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. Our common room was also the best out of all the houses. It was the most welcoming room in the entire castle if I’m being honest. I loved the common room, I spent a lot of my time curled up in the yellow and black polka dot chair in the corner against the bookshelf and covered with a hanging vine plant that I didn’t know the name of. It pretty much was my chair, everyone knew that. It’s where I read, studied, did my schoolwork, everything. I loved that chair.
I made my way towards the girls’ dormitories and pushed open the door to the same room I had been walking into for the past five years. I walked over to my bed and sat down on it, okay, I flopped face first into the pillow while shoving my headphones back into my ears. I shared this room with three other girls, Jilly of course, that is how we met and then two other fifth years who in all honesty, I didn’t even know their names. They kept to themselves and Jilly and I kept to ourselves.
I closed my eyes and thanked God that we had a day to ourselves before we started classes. And of course, I took after my sister and was in advanced classes every year. Which meant more work for me and most times I wasn’t even in class with my year. But I was okay with that, I didn’t much care for anyone in my house, it was only ever Cedric and Jilly.
I don’t remember falling asleep but when I woke up my headphones were in my ears still, a spell cast to keep them there unless they were pulled out by a person. My hair covered the pillow, my headphones and my face. “The Drift” by Blackmill playing in my ears, also a spell to keep the battery from ever dying. I pushed myself off the bed and walked into the washroom and looked at myself in the mirror. My braid was a disaster, wasn’t’ even over my shoulder like normal and my eyeliner I had on yesterday was smeared on my face.
It took me about 30 minutes to make myself look alive before I took a shower. I used my wand to dry my hair before getting dressed in a simple black skirt that ended right above my knees in the front but flared out towards my ankles in the back. I paired it with a simple yellow long-sleeved top and a pair of black leggings and slipped on a simple pair of black heels with bronze buttons on the that Taryn had given me for Christmas the year before. I wrapped a black ribbon around my neck and let it hang down to my stomach and tied a small bow before grabbing the Black Pearl pendant necklace out of my trunk and slipping it over my neck carefully.
Draco had bought it for me for my birthday about two years go. When I thought he hated me and wanted nothing to do with me because I wasn’t in Slytherin like the rest of both of our families. I thought for sure he hated me. But he got me a necklace and he has been a close friend ever since. Well, he kind of has to be, he is Taryn’s best friend, or at least damn close to her best friend. They have been friends since before I was even born.
I shook my head from the thoughts of Draco and quickly pulled my brush through my hair and did my usual braid letting it rest over my left shoulder before turning around. I spent the next 15 minutes putting all my stuff away, once I was done I turned off my iPod and slipped it in the drawer by my bed before making my way out of the room quietly as to let Jilly and the other girls sleep, as they had done for me last night.
I made my way down to the Great Hall to see very few people up, there was about ten people in here, Taryn and Draco were two of them. There was nobody at the Hufflepuff table, Hufflepuffs were known to never be up this early, and Jilly was asleep so I bit my lip slightly before quietly making my way over towards my sister and Draco. Taryn’s back was to me but Draco saw me approach and looked at me and blinked slightly. Now I felt like this was a bad idea. And he wouldn’t stop looking at me either. I smoothed out my skirt, momentarily hoping he liked what I was wearing, hell I hoped Taryn liked what I was wearing she had spent all summer with me getting a new wardrobe because I swear my body decided this summer was a good time to grow into itself or something.
I bit down harder on my lip for a second before fiddling with my hair, a nervous habit I’ll admit, and took a deep breath glancing between Draco and my sister who I don’t think even knew I was here yet.
“Can I sit with you guys?”
Enjoy guys! -S

Servants Of Insanity (Chapter Three) Hard Times
We sat through the entire Prefect meeting barely listening. Occasionally Draco and I would laugh at something the Head Girl said but other than that it was fairly silent. “As we all know, we need to be on high alert this year for suspicious behavior. Last year’s tragedy will not be forgotten and we need to be aware of what to look for if the Dark Lord tries to infiltrate the school.” My eyes immediately shot up to her as she spoke of Cedric’s death.
Cedric Diggory’s death had rocked the entire school, except for the Slytherin house. He was the nicest guy in school, and everyone had loved him. His death was exactly as she’d said, a tragedy. I felt my eyes start to well up with tears and I stood up excusing myself. I hastened my way to the bathroom shoving people out of my way.
I got myself into the bathroom quickly and locked the door behind me. I wiped the tears that had spilled over and shook my head at myself in the mirror. This wasn’t who I was, getting upset over a guy in Hufflepuff. But Cedric, he’d been different. Out of every guy I’d ever known in my life apart from Draco, he’d seen right through the façade. He’d never let my reputation or the opinions of others change how he treated me. Never once had I seen fear in his eyes when he’d spoken to me. We got appointed Prefects on the same day and had been given patrols on the same nights.
No one else had really known this, but we used to patrol together and talk. We’d talk for hours until our patrols were up and it was time for us to go to bed. He’d been good friends with Tobi as well which I was beyond thankful for. I knew us being in different houses could be difficult sometimes but I’d always tried to watch after her and protect her. I couldn’t have protected her from Cedric’s death if I tried to. I also couldn’t help her cope, because I obviously didn’t know how to either.
Once my face was no longer blotchy and I looked normal again I unlocked the door and walked out. I got halfway down the hall when kids started flooding out to get to the bathrooms to change. I slammed shoulders with someone and turned around to bite their heads off when I saw the red hair. “Hey, I was just looking for you.”
I narrowed my eyes at Ron and glanced around to make sure no one was paying attention to us talking. “Why would you be looking for me?” His eyes softened even though my tone was harsh and he took a small step forward.
“I wanted to make sure you were alright…and to tell you we have patrols together the next couple of nights.” It was a kind gesture, I had missed the end of the meeting, but I didn’t get why Weasley even cared.
 “I’m fine. Why wouldn’t I be?”
He gave me a small smile and it started to baffle me. It was like the meaner I got the nicer the kid became to me. In past years Weasley avoided Draco and I at all costs, even going as far as to take the long way to classes so he wouldn’t run into us. Now all of a sudden, he seemed to have lost his mind. “You ran off when she mentioned Cedric, I assumed you two were friends. I know you had patrols with him last year…”
It took me completely off guard that he’d known I patrolled with Cedric, or to have made the assumption we were friends. I cleared my throat and shook my head, trying to shake Ced from my memories. “Like I said, I’m fine. He was just some kid that died. I just needed to use the restroom.” I shoved past him and made my way back to the Prefect cart. I grabbed my robes and went to change when I ran into Draco who looked full of thought.
“What’s up?” He shook his head; his robes had been changed so he must have just come from the bathroom.
“Nothing. Um, you should get changed. We’re almost there and we’re in charge of taking the 5th years up to the castle, I’ll watch the Slytherin kids if you want to watch over the Hufflepuffs and make sure that Tobi gets settled in.” I nodded, noticing how his cheeks flushed with color when he mentioned the Hufflepuffs. He’d probably found some Hufflepuff to screw and just didn’t want to tell me.
Walking past him I quickly got changed and grabbed my luggage as the train stopped. I scurried out with Draco as we found the fifth years. I scanned the small crowd for my sister and found her with her friend. I smiled slightly at her before I was approached by a Gryffindor asking questions. “Buzz off and wait in line.” I shooed him away and Draco and I got everyone ready and started towards the castle.
As we made our way Draco found me once more. “What classes are you taking this year?”
I shrugged and glanced behind me to make sure Tobi was following along. She seemed fascinated in Draco and I talking. “Transfiguration, Potions, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Ancient Ruins, and Divination. You?” He grinned at me widely and nodded.
“Same. I bet we have the same class schedule again.” I laughed at him because we’d had the same class schedule since we’d started school. We usually tried to keep it similar so that if he needed help I’d be up to speed with the coursework. We finally made it up to the castle and directed everyone to their proper tables.
I stopped Tobi before she sat down and smiled at her. “How was the train ride?”
She shrugged and glanced behind her. Some of the Hufflepuffs were watching her and I knew it was because of me. A lot of them didn’t understand how we were related, and most of them were just afraid of me. “Fine. You?”
I shrugged along with her and sighed. “Fine. We talked about some safety precautions and stuff with the Dark Lord in the Prefect meeting.” At the mention of him her eyes widened much like anyone else’s would have.
“He wouldn’t try anything with the school, would he?” I desperately wished I could tell her no, but it would be a lie too big. Shaking my head, I patted her on the shoulder.
“The teachers wouldn’t let him hurt any of the student’s, Tobi. And I wouldn’t let him hurt you, so you have nothing to fear.” She seemed less than comforted by what I’d said and she glanced away for a moment.
“Yeah, that’s what they said about the Games too.” At this comment, my jaw stiffened. I’d never told Tobi about Cedric and me, whatever we had been. And I didn’t want to change that now. I didn’t want to take away from the memory of him, and I would be if she thought we’d both lied to her. She looked up at me, sensing something was wrong and I faked a smile.
“Get seated and have some food. I’ll be over there if you need me.” She nodded and I walked off quickly taking a few deep breaths. It was hard, everything was hard, but this year would only get harder and I knew that. Big things were in the works, and I needed to stay on top of them or people would end up getting hurt.

Servants Of Insanity (Chapter Two) Tingles
Flopping down on the seat I rolled my eyes. I loved my sister, I did, but sometimes, I just didn’t understand her. I glanced over at Jilly to see her settling in her seat, slowly watching out the door to see if Taryn was going to come back. Jillian Blakeledge, the closest thing to my best friend behind my sister. She laced her fingers together tightly and had a thoughtful expression on her face causing me to tilt my head slightly. “What’s up, Jilly?” I asked causing her to slowly look at me.
“I don’t understand how you two are related, let alone how you get along so well. You are complete opposites.” She said quietly. I simply shrugged as a response. It was true though, I was completely opposite from my sister. She was impulsive and assertive, where I was more resistant and withheld. I didn’t really like the conflict that she craved. I had more tolerance than she did too. Which at times was actually pretty funny. But most of all, I was a typical Hufflepuff. I got along with everyone and just had the patience that I swear my sister lacked. She always was a typical Slytherin, just like the rest of our family.
A pang shot threw my heart at the thought. I was the only one in my family to ever be sorted anywhere but Slytherin. I think my only saving grace was that at least I wasn’t in Gryffindor. My mind shot back to listening to our parents last night, praising Tar like she was a bloody goddess. Which she kind of is to be honest. She was beautiful, smart, and people basically did whatever she wanted and not just because she was a Prefect.
I rolled my eyes at my own thoughts and glanced out the windows literally just zoning out for the rest of the ride. Jilly nudged my foot gently and I slowly turned to look at her and she titled her head slightly. “What have you been thinking about? We are nearly there.” She said and I blinked and smiled slightly at my thoughts.
“Honestly, I was thinking about Tar and how when Ron walked up he looked like his brain was malfunctioning.” I said and she giggled slightly.
“Do you think he likes her?” She asked and I shrugged.
“Don’t all boys have a thing for my sister?” I asked and she nodded.
“Cedric did too, right?” she asked and I flinched slightly at his name.
Cedric Diggory had been my best friend. Even above my sister at one point. When I got sorted into Hufflepuff, I didn’t know what to do. I was afraid my family would hate me, afraid my sister would hate me. I was alone, I didn’t know anyone. He took me under his protective wing so to speak. Made sure I was always okay, helped me with my homework for God’s sake. Like he was my only saving grace and when he died, it almost killed me too. I think that my sister had been watching me a lot closer since it happened.
I slowly stood up along with Jilly and grabbed my robes from my trunk that I had left on the ground at my feet. I followed her out of the compartment and we made our way to the toilets to change. I waited my turn and once I was inside, changed into my robes. I glanced up at my reflection in the mirror and tilted my head. I had the same white hair as my sister, but the black in mine was more prominent than in hers. And her eyes were a brilliant greyish-blue while mine were greener, from our father. I tapped my yellow painted nails against the sink of the washroom and sighed. I’d been forever judging myself against my sister, and she always won.
When I managed to get over it I slipped out of the stall and ran directly into someone. A small scream escaped my tips and I tightly shut my eyes waiting for the impact of either the door or the floor. Instead, I felt arms around me, preventing the fall. I slowly opened one eye and blinked slightly. “Are you okay, Tobi?” I tilted my head as he set me on my feet. His arms were cold, like really cold. I could feel it in my bones.
“Yeah, thanks, Harry.” I said and he smiled down at me.
“Head up in the clouds?” I smiled up at him and went to respond when someone beat me to it.
 “Shove off, Potter.”
I looked up at Harry to see him glaring and I mentally groaned before spinning around to face the blonde boy that stood behind me. “Shut it, Malfoy.” Harry said. “I’ll see you later, Tobi,” he said before carefully walking around me and literally shoving Draco out of his way.
“Was he bothering you?” Draco asked taking a step towards me.
“No, he is my friend. Something I hope one day you as well as my sister will get through your heads.” I said and he simply rolled his eyes.
“He is bad company to keep, Tobi.” He said leaning against the wall blocking me in the corner, considering I had been in the second to last stall. I can only assume Harry had been in the last one.
“And what should I consider you as, Draco Malfoy?” I asked and he smiled, like a real smile not his normal smug smirk. I had known Draco for a long time. Granted, as a child he had spent more time with my sister considering they were the same age, and the fact that I kept more to myself. I enjoyed the Malfoy’s magnificent library whenever I was forced to go over there with my parents.
My eyes traveled over Draco slowly. He was already in his uniform but his robe hung loosely over his arm. His long sleeved white shirt was tight on his arms, showing off his muscles. I snapped out of my staring to look up and see that signature smirk of his and automatically rolled my eyes. “Like the view there, Cavanagh?” He asked and I scoffed before I could stop myself and his smirk only widened.
“Shut it, Malfoy.” I shot back and he smirked.
“See, there is the Slytherin.” He said and I rolled my eyes.
“You are the only one who sees it,” I said and he smiled and gently pushed some of my hair from my face, letting his fingers linger on my neck for a moment.
“I see a lot.” He said quietly causing me to look at him and he dropped his hand quickly and turned around without another word and walked away leaving me I the hallway staring after him.
I sighed slightly and shook the thoughts in my head away before heading back to the compartment. Jilly was already back and she tilted her head and looked at me with a small smile. “What took you so long?” I shrugged slightly and she sent me a smirk. “I saw you with him.” She said and I looked at her but felt my heart beating faster.
 “With who?” I asked.
“Do you like him? Did he ask you out?” she asked and I narrowed my eyes.
 “Who, Jilly?”
I talked to two people and I needed to know which one she was talking about in order to decide if I was going to laugh or not.
 “Harry, of course!”
I laughed, a little too hard I think, and shook my head. “No, of course not! Me and Harry, ew. I mean he is cool and all, but no.” I said causing her to roll her eyes at me. I shook my head to make my point before looking out the window to see it, Hogwarts, in all its glory. It was beautiful and I didn’t realize just how much I missed it until I was sitting there in my seat not being able to look away from it.
“Now all we have to do is worry about getting threw the ceremony and then, then we get food.” Jilly said and I found myself laughing along with her. But in all honesty, I wasn’t very hungry. I could really go for some pumpkin juice. Mainly because right now I wanted to think of anything other than the fact that my body still tingled from where Draco touched me.
Enjoy guys! Feel free to comment and message us! -S

Servants Of Insanity (Chapter One) Bad Start
I glanced around my room for the millionth time trying to decide if there was anything else I needed in my trunk. Sighing I sat on the edge of my bed and reached over to pet my black cat, Jinx. She purred under my touch and I smiled to myself. Heading into my 6th year at Hogwarts I was excited to just get started already. I jumped when the clock struck 10 o’clock and stood up quickly smoothing out my mini-skirt. “It’s almost time to leave, Jinx. You ready?” She meowed in my direction and I laughed to myself.
“Mum wants to know if you’re almost ready?” I jumped and whirled around producing my wand before realizing it was only Tobi.
“Jesus, Tobi! Knock next time, you scared me half to death!” She grinned at me and I smirked at her before flicking my wand. A pillow off my bed went flying towards her and she didn’t have time to deflect it.
“Taryn! Stop using magic for everything! You know mom says we need to learn to do things without magic!” I rolled my eyes dramatically at her before cracking a smile.
“Lighten up, Tobi, what mom doesn’t know what hurt her…or me.” She giggled at my joke and the glanced around my room before narrowing her eyes.
“Where is everything?” She walked over to my closet before gasping. “Your entire closet is gone, how’d you do that?”
Walking over I closed my trunk and smiled. “Easy, I charmed my trunk to hold all of my stuff. Come on, we’ll do it to yours before we leave.” I linked my arm in hers and followed her to her room. I showed her easily how to charm her trunk and then we heard mum calling us from downstairs. Grabbing my trunk and Jinx in her carrier I headed downstairs where our mother stood by the door tapping her heels.
“Girls, we’ll be late if you don’t hurry up! Now get in the car!” I rolled my eyes and walked past her with Tobi in tow and we climbed in the car. Thirty minutes later we were at the train station. We rushed past the Muggles, my mother’s nose so far up in the air it was surprising she could see straight and ended up at platform 9 ¾.
Mother looked around for what I could only imagine were the Malfoys while I inspected my freshly painted Slytherin green nails. “All mum and dad could talk about this morning at breakfast was you being a Prefect. It was like I didn’t even exist.” Tobi muttered this to me under her breath so that mom couldn’t hear her. I glanced at her and gave her a smile.
“Come on, you and I both know they’re proud of you. They just don’t get the whole Hufflepuff thing. Plus, being a Prefect is a pain in my ass. The only reason I even did it was to have access to the fifth floor Prefect’s bathroom and to boss people around. Plus, it’s ten times easier to stay out of trouble while causing it.” I winked at her and her mood seemed to lighten up.
“There they are! Narcissa!” My mother squealed at her best friend and pulled Tobi and I forward. I pulled free from her and glanced at Tobi.
“Mum, I have to get on the train. I have to get all the kids in order and get to the Prefect meeting. Write you next week?” She barely glanced in my direction as she nodded. I winked at Tobi before walking off with my trunks. I handed them off to one of the train workers and carried Jinx inside. I left her in the Prefect cart and began patrolling the halls of the train.
Someone grabbed me from behind and I quickly whirled around, wand produced and shoved into the person’s throat before I realized it was just Draco. “Jesus! What is up with people scaring me today?!” I pulled my wand away from his throat as he smirked at me and I smacked his shoulder. “Good to see you too, asshole.”
“Well, well, well. Taryn Cavanagh gets scared, shocking.” I rolled my eyes before starting to walk the halls once more. I shoved a first year out of my way as Draco lazily followed behind barking orders left and right. “How was your summer, Tare?”
Sighing deeply, I made it to the Prefect carriage and glanced around realizing the Head Boy and Girl still weren’t there. “Boring as usual. We went to a few balls, you were there for that. Quidditch games. The usual.” I glanced behind me and started making my way back down the train. We started to pull away from the platform and everyone began waving and shouting at their parents.
“Where’s Tobi?” I shrugged as Malfoy asked this and then spotted her a little way down the train looking for a spot on the train with one of her Hufflepuff friends. I spotted her glance into a carriage before sighing and moving on. Draco and I walked up quickly and her friend cowered behind her, obviously terrified.
“Tobs, haven’t you found a seat yet?” She glanced behind me at Draco before returning her glance back to me.
“Um, no, they all seem to be taken…. it’s fine! We’ll find something.” Before she could finish her sentence, I’d opened up a carriage door and glared in at the second year Gryffindor students inside giggling.
“Everyone, out.” They glanced up before realizing it was me and scrambled out quickly. I smiled as Draco laughed loudly behind me. I turned back to my sister and her cowering friend and grinned. “There. One’s empty for ya.”
She sighed and looked almost sad for the second years. “I could have found a spot, Taryn. You didn’t have to run them off.” I shrugged and leaned against the open doorway.
“I know you could have, but now ya don’t have to. Just say thank you and move on, little sis.” Her friend thanked me from directly behind her and I smiled at my sister.
“Hey! You can’t run off second years from their seats, Taryn!” I gritted my teeth as someone’s voice shouted out from behind my sister. She and her friend both turned as I spotted the all too familiar red hair coming straight for us. Draco growled from behind us and took a step forward to be beside me.
“Weasley, you’re starting the wrong fight! I would walk away if I were you.” Draco spat at him and took a step forward before I grabbed his arm and pulled him back.
“Don’t.” I stared at Ron right in his eyes and they seemed to almost soften which threw me off. “He’s not worth it this little in to the year, we’ll have all year to make his life hell.” I smirked at Ron before pulling Draco back a little bit. “Come on, we should get to the Prefect cart anyway…” I glanced at Tobi who had an odd look on her face. “You’ll be alright?”
She nodded at me as we all ignored Ron and Draco snarling at each other. “Good, I’ll be in the Prefect cart if you need anything.” I tugged at Draco’s arm and he turned around and stormed off. I made eye contact with Ron once more before giving him a snarl and turning around quickly following Malfoy to the Prefect’s cart before the meeting started.
I could already tell this year would be an interesting one.
