I thought I might share one of my new tattoos. A couple years ago, a dear friend and I coined the term “fish bag moment”

A fish bag moment might be sitting all alone in an empty new apartment after coming out and upending your life, or starting a new job in a brand new line of work because it’s closer to your dreams

It’s what happens when you take a leap of faith or make a hard decision for yourself, when the future is so hard to visualize and everything feels scary. You’re just a fish in a bag and you can’t see where you’re going

There is a profound loneliness that comes over me once and a while, especially when my friends elsewhere are sharing their moments of joy or excitement or what-have-you via Snapchat, Instagram, and group texts.

The fam just finished planning a bowling night, a full month before I would be sharing a continent with them. The guys from work are meeting their friends from their most recent trip abroad for a night of cards. The friend from my last job, who recently relocated with his wife to the same country I now live in, is on a collegiate-flavored tour of some studios a few hours north. K is visiting her aunt, baby in tow—she will be meeting an old friend (whom I am also familiar with) for a day a or two, just to catch up. D is in a city two countries away. E is with S and his wife and newborn, soaking in the new baby joys, playing auntie (a role she is especially good at, and especially relishes in).

And I am home. I am in my not-so-silent house, the projector whirring quietly as it scrolls through Google Photos, my punishment for leaving a video on pause too long. The 3D printer is whizzing and occasionally banging as it prints what I hope will be a trophy for a silly award ceremony my workplace does (to award the funniest mistake of the month…it’s more camaraderie-coded than it sounds in text). The fridge is humming, the radiators are clicking, the phone emits an insistent buzz as I ignore another Duolingo reminder to “practice your German!”

The papers of my book rustle periodically as I turn the page.

I am home. And I feel so alone.

It’s a pretty standard punctuation, and it’s coded into pretty much every Arabic-letter font to elongate like that when you type “dash dash”

A hyphen (-) indicates a hyphenated word, possibly split.

The en dash is slightly longer than a hyphen and is used primarily indicate a span of time (from 1992–1998)

An em dash (—) indicates an additional or expanded explanation/thought, one that probably shouldn’t be its own sentence, but might be helpful to include for flavor, insight, or context reasons. It is fairly interchangeable with parentheses, but I like em more.

“I received education both pre- and post-formal schooling. The school—if you can call it that—was our front porch, and I was ever the eager pupil; my father made an excellent teacher.”

someone on twitter is trying to claim that use of an em-dash is an indication of AI-generated writing because it’s “relatively rare��� for actual humans to use it. skill issue

to those of you who are moving here from tiktok, from someone whos used both tiktok and tumbr for years...

1. DO NOT censor your posts

dont censor sex, abuse, suicide, dont censor it. we dont have censors like tiktok does, you wont be banned for talking about these things and tagging them properly helps people avoid them (also, we dont have shadowbanning here)

2. we dont really have an algorithm

you follow who you follow, and you see posts from who you follow or what you search. the 'for you page' is basically useless here. this also brings me to my next two points

3. dont crosstag

we get it, on tiktok you have to crosstag for reach, but thats not really a thing here. just tag your posts properly (also posters often leave more info about the post in the tags!! and when you reblog stuff you can leave your own notes in the tags, kind of like the old "repost comments" on tiktok)

4. dont expect to go viral/be famous

"viral" isnt really a thing on here (at least not for the average blogger). your posts will probably get 2-10 likes and you wont get nearly as many followers than on tiktok. thats just how tumblr is

5. blocking is your best friend

tiktok is VERY discussion based, and while tumblr is much more discussion based than other social medias, its still not a good place for ragebait/discourse. dont interact, itll make your experience worse in the end, just block and move on

6. you cant go into someone elses house and start rearranging their furniture

this is tumblr, not tiktok. dont diss old tumblr users for how they use the site or try to change them, thats like going into someone elses house and trying to rearrange their furniture. we've been here longer and we're familiar with the site and its culture, either find your niche, adapt, or find a different app

Last book: book 14 of Wheel of Time (yes this is the second time I’ve read the series this year, shush)

Last movie: wicked! I really enjoyed it! I forgot there was more after Defying Gravity (aka the entire second act lmfaoooo) so I left the theater wondering wtf they’ll be doing next 😂

Last show: Great British Bake Off! Before that we binged Taskmaster (s14-18)

Relationship status: happily married! Celebrated 5 years a few weeks ago

Sweet/savory/spicy: mmmm right this minute, savory!

Current obsession: husband got me into warhammer so I’m building a display-only army (I have no desire to actually play). I’m having a lot of fun though!

Looking forward to: husb got me a 3D printer for Christmas but it was on back order, so that’ll be here in a few weeks!!

Last Book: in the middle of rereading Novice Dragoneer by EE Knight. One of my favourite fantasy novels. I read the other popular book about riding dragons recently and needed to read something good instead.

Last Movie: watched Run Lola Run for the first time a couple days ago. Very good, but I couldn't tell you what it's about (I could try, but that really defeats the whole movie. Iykyk)

Last Show: showing my wife M*A*S*H. We're in season 2 and her favourite is Radar. My favourite is Margaret, but you all know I'm a sucker for an Adult Woman.

Relationship status: Married so please send all inquiries through my wife for prior approval.

Sweet/Savoury/Spicy: sweet

Current Obsession: picked up Metaphor: ReFantazio a couple days ago. It's very good. A great deal of beautiful red headed women. Adult women too. Happy chanukkah.

Looking Forward To: got a couple sca events coming up in the next couple weeks and my wife has agreed to accompany me!
