Howdy, you whippersnappers. I sent off a DNA test on Mouse. I’ve had her for 12 years after finding her as a stray. I’ve always referred to her as a purebred Jrt, because she appears to be one and whoever bred her either thought she was or was trying to pass her off as purebred since her tail is docked and sees removed.

Turns out my old girl is 86% Jrt and 14% Miniature Pinscher. I’m not terribly surprised, since she isn’t well bred.. but it’s so amusing.

How are the pack doing?

Everyone is doing great! It’s been raining like hell for weeks so we’re living in a constant state of muddiness. :) Andddd Christmas family photo!

When mom asks if you want a cookie, but you know she doesn’t actually have one.

1. Puppy never receives vaccines

2. Puppy gets Parvovirus

3. Puppy arrives at hospital unresponsive, temp too low to read, bloody diarrhea pooling on to the exam table.

4. Blood pressure so low it is almost impossible to set an IV catheter.

5. For several days it is touch and go with explosive bloody diarrhea.

6. Dog managed to pull through.

Let me present you with another situation I had to experience.

1. Dog never receives vaccines.

2. Dog is a full grown adult and contracts Parvo AND Distemper, as well as heartworms.

3. Dog is hospitalized and on IV fluids for days.

4. Vomiting, diarrhea, eye and nasal discharge.

5. It’s about 11pm at night and I am crying over this dog who is laying on his side but still slowly eating. I still have a little hope since he’s eating. Last time I see him, I kiss him on the head so he knows that SOMEONE cares about him. Wipe my tears and head home.

6. Next morning, he stands up.. and then drops dead.

Rest In Peace, Hoggle.

There’s nothing like an anti-vaxxer telling me that vaccinating your dog is poisoning it.

I have seen several hundred parvo dogs, and probably 50 Distemper cases this year alone, with a 100 more unconfirmed, but had all the symptoms at our local shelter. I have held dying puppies because they never received vaccines.

Fucking FIGHT ME.

Is it hard dealing with animal deaths? I want to become a VT but I’m afraid, I love animals too much and will bawl my eyes out after everyone

Sometimes it is. I’ve become accustomed to it, unfortunately. But every now and then I get a case that makes me cry. Like a bulldog that came in for heat stroke and was euthanized because her temp was over 110F. That just hit me in the feels that day.. because she died as a result of her breed standard. And a puppy adopted from our local shelter that got Parvo, owners paid a thousand for hospitalization and he survived.. just to get Distemper (which he got from the shelter).

And because of my job, I’ve been present for the euthanasias of several of my family or friends’ dogs... which is always very hard.

But honestly, most of the time I’m ok. Sometimes it’s sad, but I usually don’t cry. Before I became a tech, I didn’t think I could handle animal death either. I couldn’t even touch a dead animal. But, you get used to it. It’s always sad, but you get used to it.

It makes things easier knowing you are ending their suffering.

And, while it may be hard to deal with the deaths, the lives you are able to save make it all worth it. That’s what you need to hold on to.
