Asaba Harumasa and Self-Worth
Alright! I am back to talk about Harumasa once more! Why? Because I love this man a lot.
As the title says, this is about Harumasa's self worth. I'll be mentioning some of his trust events here of course.
Some warnings for mention of suicide attempt.
In the Rank up three event, we encounter him at Port Elpis talking to a girl outside the lighthouse. Harumasa mentions that the girl looked like she was going to jump, so he talked her down from it. He also mentions that he shared some of his personal experiences with her. It is possible that he may have considered doing similar himself before, but things changed and he saw a little more value in his life.
However, just because he saw a little more value in his life doesn't mean he believes he has as much value as anyone else. I don't think he really values himself as much as he does the lives of other people.
During his agent story, A Name Written In Water, Harumasa gave his spinal fluid so that Kana, Ryosuke, and Tsubaki wouldn't have to. He was afraid for their health and safety. Even when the proxy tells him he needs to go to a hospital, he dismisses it and says he will be fine. Then he says he will fight his ethereal turned master.
When he says "No one values my life more than I do", I think he is saying that he doesn't think other people see any value in him. While he doesn't see much value in himself, Harumasa still wants to live. He wants to keep fighting to give his own life meaning and importance. Because he knows he will be dying, so he wants to make sure he is able to contribute something meaningful before the end comes.
But Harumasa likely isn't aware or used to having people who genuinely value and care about him. With Section 6 and the proxies, he has people like that. And slowly, he would be able to understand how much they love him and wish for him to live for longer.

Asaba Harumasa and Relationships
So I saw a few posts saying it wouldn't be fair for Harumasa to be in a relationship with someone because it would hurt them when he does. But that is completely wrong to say. He is just as deserving as anyone else is to be able to have a relationship.
And saying that he shouldn't be in one because of his illness? That is unfair to him. Yes it would hurt the other person when he does die, but it doesn't mean he shouldn't be allowed to pursue a relationship. Harumasa likely already believes that he doesn't deserve to have relationships with people and having people keep a distance from him would only affirm the belief. And having people leave because of his illness only adds more to his belief that it is his fault people leave him.
Speaking of specific relationships he has, with the proxies Harumasa was tentative about letting them know about his illness. But of course they were able to figure it out from spending some time with him during his agent story. He slowly started letting them in just a bit more the more he spent time with them. Harumasa is happy to be able to spend time with Belle and Wise. But there are still some things he wouldn't be so willing to talk to them about. He passes off some of his own concerns as a joke so that they don't worry about him. While he let's the proxies in, he is afraid of giving too much because he thinks that could lead to them leaving too.
And with Section 6, they are people he grew to trust. Harumasa spends time with all of them, but he never shared about his illness with them. They only ended up finding out after he had nearly died.
With Soukaku, he sometimes jokes around with her. But he will apologize if he makes her cry. Like when she tried some of his coffee and he joked about how his life span was shortened now. When Soukaku started crying about not wanting him to die, Harumasa promised her he would live to 100 even though he knew it wasn't realistic for him.
With Yanagi, he is someone she worries about and nags for work. But she still looks out for him. In the Pale Wasteland story, Harumasa mentions how Yanagi had been ready to call a hospital and plan a funeral when he had started coughing up blood. Yanagi cares about his well being. She had even subtly told the new recruits he was training that Harumasa was sickly and that they should make sure he doesn't overwork himself. And lots of the new recruits listened much to Harumasa's annoyance. He had only been trying to make sure Yanagi didn't overwork herself.
And with Miyabi, Harumasa does care about her even if he teases her sometimes. During the Bringer incident when Miyabi is captured, he reminds Yanagi that they need to focus on capturing Bringer. Not because he doesn't care about Miyabi, he does care about her. He just also knows that if they focus on rescuing Miyabi, Bringer could get away. And Harumasa trusts that Miyabi will be okay. And she is. As I had said before, Miyabi also looks out for Harumasa by getting him things she knows he will like (bitter melon juice) and she praises him a lot too. She believes he is stronger than he let's on and says she never wants to make an enemy out of him.
While Harumasa had asked the proxies to kill him if he were to become an ethereal, I think he wouldn't actually let that happen. Even if he were to ask anyone of Section 6 to do the same thing, he wouldn't wish that on any of them. During the movie event, he says it would be horrible to watch your loved one die in front of you. So I think that if it were to come to it, he would take things into his own hands and stop himself before he becomes an ethereal just so no one he loves has to be burdened with doing it.
Even if you do or do not ship Harumasa with anyone in Section 6, it is hard not to see how close he is to all of them. They are people who care for him and he cares for them in turn.
Harumasa is someone who is just as deserving of love as any other person is.

More Things about Asaba Harumasa
Spoilers for his Agent Story: A Name Written in Water (of course) and other events
Another thing I remember is something that happens during Harumasa's agent story, A Name Written in Water. When the proxy threatens to break their partnership with him after hearing Kirishima say "Oh, you're deteriorating rapidly... Looks like luck is on my side."
Harumasa immediately caves and tells them what he had chosen to do because in that moment, it felt like they could leave him and he was afraid of that. He knew they were concerned when he told them he had given his spinal fluid to protect the kids because he could tell they were not in good condition. And he dismisses the proxy's concern with "It's fine. The dose was small enough not to cause any serious side effects. Besides, my tolerance is different from theirs. My body… is used to this kind of strain."
He cares about other people a bit more than he does himself. He had grown up in a place that taught him he was less than others because of his condition. He doesn't see himself as important compared to other people. Compared to others, he believes he doesn't really have loved ones to return to, but he is wrong. Harumasa has the proxies and Section 6. After learning everything, they accepted him for who he is and chose to stay with him.
Of course, Harumasa had to ask them to continue to treat him as they have before. He doesn't want to be pitied for his illness, and they respect his wishes after a little. Section 6 shows their care for him in little ways. Like during the food event, Miyabi got him some bitter melon juice. She knows he likes bitter things, so she got him something that was bitter and could help with his health.
Tumblr media
She is showing her care for him in her own way. Just like how Yanagi is making sure he still has his job in order to have enough to make a living. After all, he would need money in order to afford all of his medications that he needs.
Despite it all, Harumasa is still surprised to find out people care about him in these ways. It just isn't something he expects from other people. He never really had that growing up. It is all still something he needs to get used to.

Pierce Through the Darkness
Summary
Hoshimi Miyabi was the blade that cut through the darkness, and Section 6 was her sheath. They were always there to make sure justice was delivered. Miyabi was the one to protect them, not the other way around. It was never the other way around. Harumasa wished that she would allow him to protect her one day.

Asaba Harumasa and Abandonment
Totally not doing this because of the mischaracterization posts I have seen about him.
Alright lets talk about Asaba Harumasa, our favorite archer from Hollow Special Operations Section 6. To be honest, he is my favorite character in ZZZ. His agent story really sold him for me.
What we had learned was that Harumasa was abandoned in a hospital by his parents after his diagnosis of Ether Aptitude Regression Syndrome. We don't know why his parents did that or if they are still alive, but the event had an impact on him. He may not have remembered them very well, but the fact that they abandoned him stuck with him.
Then he met his master. For Harumasa, his master became a father figure who taught him many things. Thanks to his master, he learned how to wield a bow, use a sword, and how to survive. However, Harumasa also notes that he realized his master was one of the people behind the development of the ether aptitude booster drug. Despite that, he still loved his master.
When his master had told him he was leaving, Harumasa's first instinct was to ask "Master… Are you leaving? Just like mom and dad… Did I do something wrong?" The first thought he has is that this is somehow his fault. I think having someone he loves leave him had caused abandonment issues for him, and this was a factor in how he started to present himself to others as he grew up.
Putting on the act of the joking slacker could result in people choosing to keep a distance because they are annoyed with that kind of behavior from him. But his act was also to hide his illness from the people around him. After all, Harumasa doesn't want to be pitied for his illness. He wants people to treat him like a normal person.
But he may have trouble seeing himself as a person. In his character demo, he sees his reflection as the Thanatos ethereal. He also images the people around him calling him a monster. It is likely Harumasa sees himself as a monster because of his illness, and he fears that the people around him will see the same.
I think he is the kind of person who tries to keep people at a distance to avoid the pain of being abandoned again. But at the same time, he yearns for companionship because he doesn't want to be alone either. This is actually something people can experience, and it does make it difficult for people to establish long standing relationships.
Harumasa experienced abandonment and is afraid of it happening again, but he is making some efforts to know other people. If you forget to show up to hangouts with him, he says things like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He quickly says he forgives the proxy because he doesn't want to come across as clingy. He is also afraid the clinginess will just push the proxy away. So he tries to sound like he is fine with them not showing up to see him.
The two experiences he had with abandonment greatly impacted his life. Harumasa is afraid of growing close to people, but he is also afraid of being left alone. It is partly why he doesn't want people to know about his illness too. He thinks that once people find out, they would leave him to. And much to his relief, Section 6 accepts him despite it all.
Asaba Harumasa is someone who has experienced abandonment, but he is learning to heal from it. I think he is a strong person, and he will be able to open up to more people overtime. He will find more people who are willing to accept him for who he is.

Break the Chains
Tumblr media
Summary
Harumasa had always known the day would come sooner or later, but he wished he had more time. But since that day had arrived, he decided that he would take his own fate in own hands. This was not something he could let someone else take care of. If this was the end, then he would decide how it all ended.

Show Me Kindness (And Stay by my Side)
Tumblr media
Summary:
Miyabi saw no point in going to the banquet, it was part of their job and they were going to be talking with TOPS. Harumasa and Yanagi said it was necessary, but Miyabi did not understand why they all had to be there. With a banquet like this, she doesn't know if anything could go wrong.

Please someone explain to me what exactly is the Voice Actor Hoyo drama and how exactly is a Chinese company at fault for a (mainly) USA strike?
SAG-AFTRA goes to war against AI and starts the strike. All union members are meant to be on strike and not promote the video games from the companies who didn't sign the interim bargaining agreement. Now, Hoyo is a Chinese company and outsources its eng VA to other studios. Each of its games are in different studios. Why does Hoyo have to sign the agreement and not just the eng Studios?
Would Genshin and other non-union projects have to become union projects? Is it not allowed for non-union members to work on union projects in the voice acting industry? Would this greatly affect the non-union VAs? I like sources with these answers and not just anecdotal evidence or 'I'm a VA trust me, bro' without proof that you actually are a VA. Just like I'd like to see a true source about the 3000$+ yearly fees to join the union.
Zenless Zone Zero recently had some drama for replacing two voice actors without prior notice. The game is under Sound Candence Studios which, while not under the agreement, has in fact a clause about AI-protection in their contracts. And ZZZ and the studio are not 'struck' by the strike. But 2 VAs decided to strike anyway. One was confirmed to not even be part of the union. I think the biggest issue here was 'without prior notice' as there was no reason to strike a company that essentially doesn't have much to do with the strike anyway.
And Hoyo is changing Genshin's studio to SIDE studio, probably to bypass the strike but also to ensure that they won't have this problem in the future as they don't only use USA based VAs. In fact, they replaced a character's VA with a VA based in Japan. With a Japanese agency. In SIDE's Tokyo branch. And not only are fans mad but also the USA voice actors bullied the poor guy on twitter/x. Now, Kinich was only voiced in ONE patch. Why such drama? Because he lost a job he isn't doing? USA is not the only english speaking country in the world, and I'm sure that a lot of people in Europe, Africa and South America also play Genshin in English. People who may not be aware of the strike and complain to Hoyo about the voiceless characters. Hoyo never made a contract with the original VA, Formosa did, so they have no responsibilities towards him. And Hoyo has no moral reason to continue to employ USA citizens. Not their country, not their strike. If an American company did this, I wouldn't like it and it would be easy to sway me on SAG-AFTR's side. But since it's a Chinese company with an intended worldwide audience I'm more on their side. They waited for more than half a year for the US to get it together and come to a conclusion and it's their right as a foreign company to act upon the complaints of the consumers. (Hopefully, they also take the complaints of diversity and story telling in Natlan to heart as well). And honestly, I would like to have more VA's outside the US in general. I dislike the overexposure of USA media and licensing groups.(Hated it since 4kids got the rights for Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh for all of the 'western world' and countries like Germany had to take the USA versions of the shows, instead the original Japanese like they did with Digimon and One Piece. Seriously, same channel one after another you would hear Brock say in german: 'jelly filled donut' for rice ball and then hear Zorro say onigiri or riceball later)
Anyway. I do have a bias, but I'm still on the fence since TikTok, Reddit and Youtube all have different sentiments and opinions depending on the information, misinformation, and rumors they heard. I just want clarity. I would even read the entire interim bargaining agreement to properly understand what is happening. Except the bullying. There is no reason to attack an American born Japanese person who has a wife and a child in Japan for taking a job his Japanese agency probably told him to take. The moment the audition started the old VA lost the job. He didn't betray anyone.
There is also the fact that it seems Wriothlessly's VA isn't om strike anymore since he does promote Genshin on his YouTube again.
