Decided to focus on my WIPs that are Knock-Knock or Knock-Knock adjacent, though I think all of these have to do with the D&D-ified version of the character that I rotated for like 3 years with friends.

I decided to dig back a bit because ‘current WIP’ is anywhere between a sci-fi space marine kill code and having a government erase your ability to control your own body (neither of which have to do with Knock-Knock.)

Well let’s make this interesting then, there’s a WIP that’s so old I forget when I first started working on it. It had to do with different D&D characters trying to show The Lodger how they cast spells. Some casted traditionally like a wizard, others pulled from Gods, and others just threw shit into a potion and made things happen. The Lodger had to learn on the fly and discover that the magic actually comes from Within or whatever. Maybe I ought to try and pick that up again, I remembered it being fairly fun to write.

Literally almost all of them I almost started writing about the plot of ‘doppelgänger’ again until I realized I started talking about that in a separate post, whoops lol. That doesn’t count then.

Oh! I literally just told my old DM about this one, I wanted The Lodger to be mean to someone in their nightmare because he has control over dreams in D&D (long story) and they were being immoral and lying and etc. And while The Lodger has a code about not harming anyone in the real world, he never promised to not traumatize people who are being Mean

First impression

Honestly, it’s hard to think to all the way back when I first played Don’t Starve. At first I didn’t pay super attention to him because he was just The Vessel and I hadn’t started thinking about video games as a serious story telling medium yet (idk why I grew up playing Little Big Planet), but when I realized each character had different examination texts I went back and immediately went “Oh. He’s HILARIOUS, what a nerd lol”

And then I proceeded to draw and write about nothing but Wilson to this very day.

Impression now

I forget what a goober he is sometimes. Like, I love puns, but every time I go back to read his quotes it makes me want to steal his lunch money and shove him in a locker. I love him so much.

Favorite moment

When he sees Maxwell for the first time off of the throne, and instead of chopping him up with the axe that he’s currently holding, he decides “No, this is personal.” And proceeds to try and deck Maxwell with his bare hands.

And also when he begrudgingly offers Maxwell his food in the same comic.

And also how he says “Good day to you, [player]!” To everyone except Maxwell, to which he says “Decent day to you, [player]!” The British insults are off the charts.

Idea for a story

I scrapped this a long time ago because I think I decided that being a coder wasn’t for me, even with things like RenPy that does everything for you, but at one point I wanted to make a Wilson Dating Game as a joke where each ‘skin’ had its own personality. It was supposed to have a nod to undertale where you flirt with a Meat Effigy as training, but later on if Triumphant Wilson gets jealous he’d kill you. But if you weren’t mean to the Meat Effigy, it would save you.

Maybe one day if I ever get more energy or time, I’ll try to pick it up again. It was supposed to be a fun little project but when I realized how much work went into it I went “nahhhhh I’m good.”

Side note, have you seen the code for Doki Doki Literature Club? Good God.

I try to make him short a lot. The only exception to this is Triumphant Wilson, in which I think he would use shadow magic to make himself taller. I admit I only do this to bully him <3

Sorry this took so long to answer! Going to start with The Lodger, and I’ll put Maxwell from Don’t Starve under the cut!

First impression

I remember the most striking thing was the art style, his eyes were absolutely haunted and I loved them. His design alone is what got me looking at the game.

Impression now

He’s such a little gremlin. I mean, come on, look at him! He’s such a little shit being an unreliable narrator, and I think that’s my favorite character flaw I’ve ever had the pleasure of observing and writing.

Favorite moment

Which leads into the next point, I think the most haunting part of the game was The Lodger constantly contradicting himself and abruptly saying “Help me.” with no other explanation. I know the gameplay is clunky, grindy, and completely unfair—But I will ride and die for the atmosphere at least.

Idea for a story (Mentions of disease/rotting/minor horror elements! Skip to the next one if you don’t want to read this!)

I’ve had this draft called ‘doppelgänger’ in my WIPs for ages, but it was meant to be The Lodger finding a wounded stranger out in the woods and nursing them back to health. There’s a funeral custom about draping things over mirrors, so The Lodger hasn’t seen his own reflection in years. Prattles on and on about how this poor stranger should have taken better care of themselves, they look uncanny! Their eyes look hollowed in and their skin is a deathly pale and their red hair looks like it’s falling out—

By the time he realizes it’s a living and breathing copy of himself, he’s already invited it into his home, and he has to decide what to do from here on out.

Is this fandom even big enough for popular opinions I think the lodger would be an antivaxxer in modern times, you know bro would PANIC about conspiracy theories

Him and his bed (and if you’re not with the government, I’ll ship him with basically any other man even if it’s toxic just to try and experiment with what he would do in a relationship. Please for the love of god keep him away from the girl in the woods though her Steam card is LITTLE GIRL not grown woman, that’s his daughter not his date)

Favorite headcanon

I always struggle to decide which is more heartbreaking and plausible, if The Lodger is some guy that a nearby town/city sees every now and then and never sees him again for months on end, or if no one even knows he exists and his house is just a stop in the middle of nowhere.

Though while we’re on that note, I think regardless he is insanely lonely and LOVES company of any kind. To the point where it can be kind of overbearing. But he’s trying his best.

Now, about that Maxwell guy

First impression

I haaated him, but only because I always imagined him smugly laughing every time I died to something stupid in Don’t Starve. Everything felt like concentrated spite towards my journey to the throne (that never even got past King of Winter)

Impression now

I like him so much as a character. I remembered unlocking Maxwell with cheats just to run through his dialogue in game (even though I could have just looked at the wiki, I wasn’t smart okay) and watching someone else get to his throne. It was such whiplash for me to realize that someone who (allegedly) was taunting me was actually just in an insane amount of endless misery.

Favorite moment

“Even the king is bound to the board.” Such an iconic line for me.

Also any time he whines about physical labor or his clothes getting dirty always makes me laugh

Idea for a story

It’s hard to say, I don’t tend to do a lot of writing for Maxwell since my amazing and most best friend in the world often writes him. Though I’ve always found the concept of Wilson interacting with William funny. I think once upon a time an ancient moon ago, I wanted to draw a mini comic where Wilson and William were spying on Maxwell using bush hats. Wilson goes ‘Alright, go talk to him.’ and William replies ‘No way, I scare me!’

Sigh, simpler times.

Unpopular opinion

I haven’t interacted with the fandom in LITERALLY YEARS so this could have changed, but I think people like to try and pull like… Internet cancel culture on this old man. Saying that just because he was evil once, he’s evil forever. And while I don’t think he’s entirely sunshine and rainbows, the man was poor and I get why he literally made a deal with the devil. You can tell that he never wanted at least Charlie to get involved, and he quite literally was gaslit back into the dark side, so. I dunno, be kind to your elders or something.

Initially I was so off-put by Maxwil, but as I’ve gotten older I think it’s one of my favorite opposites attract tropes.

I love Maxlie more than anything though. 10/10 friends to lovers to enemies to lovers, no notes.

I think he likes to do magic tricks for the kids. Or anyone who will watch and won’t make fun of him. He may put on a refined gentlemanly front but I think he’ll always be a nerd.

This was such a cool addition!!! The added abilities and move sets are neat!

I’m not as familiar with the newer gen (never played Scarlet or Violet) so the addition of Rabsca was very interesting to me 👀 I like the idea of Madibuzz or Honchkrow (or Murkrow) being on the team because of the crows you hear while in the forest. I also love the idea of it being a team battle with the little girl!!! She gives me the vibes of wanting to battle everyone while the lodger just wants to stick to his research lol.

This was such a fun question to ask I’ve gotten so many insights from people! I think poison is a sick archtype for a team, what with the forest rotting and all that and poison types being so good in battle

I can’t believe I didn’t think of Glimmora though, nightshade is SUCH a good representation of the rotting forest! Also did I mention that I would probably lose a battle against this team lol I never optimize in Pokémon, can’t complain about the difficulty if you make it impossible for yourself because your entire team is filled with flying types

I can't paste the picture but my personal pokemon team for Lodger is: Litwick, Phantump, Parasect, Persian, Mothim, and Polteageist! -- @theworld-ologist

A lot of these Pokémon I feel really fit him too, even the Persian, which I can see him happily letting it crush him when it thinks it’s still Meowth size lol. Can’t it learn Hypnosis also or am I misremembering?

For the Lodger's pokemon team: Litwick, Drifloom, Dusknoir, Trevenant, Misdreavis, and Murkrow

Focused more on a team made of metaphors for the themes of the game than a proper battling team. The only one of these 'mons that the Lodger has any control over is litwick; all the others refuse to obey and much prefer to tease and torment him around his house

Lol I think our lists ended up being really similar! I imagine his official “team” is Sawsbuck (Named Fyodor,) Trevenant (Named Lev,) Musharna (Named Artyom,) Noctowl (Named Pavel,) Hypno (Named Maxim,) Gloom (Named Eva) with a mention of Litwick (named Alina) as nothing more than a companion. Let me go into depth…

First off, I always saw Litwick as his ‘Companion’ Pokemon. Always following him around and helping him out, sitting on his shoulder or warming his hands, things like that.

Litwick, along with Musharna (then a Munna) were Pokemon he’s had since he was a child given to him by his parents, Litwick to try and ease his fear of ghost types as well as be a sort of nightlight, and Munna to try and eat his raging nightmares.

Trevenant was previously a Phantump he traded with his father, trading him a Kadabra in return, so they each got a trade evolution out of it.

Hypno was a Pokémon he later reluctantly trained up to try and help him around the woods specifically with subduing Pokémon with sleep. Similarly to Noctowl, though that was less of a training session. Gloom also helps with this (you can see the theme of sleep being at least half of his party) as well as maybe he uses it’s sheddings for herbs and tea and whatnot (what would Gloom tea even taste like I wonder)

I imagine there’s a Mimikyu and Cubone that he spoils after straight up just adopting them too. Or Pokémon similar to that archtype.

Now the Sawsbuck is more of a personal reference that I don’t think I could explain away too in depth unless I’m begged, but I imagine that’s the typical mount he uses to get around quickly.

As previously mentioned I imagine he HATES battling, that includes seeing other Pokémon battle, so a lot of the ‘exp’ his party got was probably him interfering with and stopping fights, if a Pokemon ever fainted he’d do his damndest to nurture them back to health. This was also over the period of a VERY long time

There’s probably lots of other ghost type Pokémon creeping around his house. Plant types are his guilty pleasure because there used to be a lot more around his house growing up, but they’ve all left/died/migrated/whatever

I do love your idea of Litwick just kind of being there as a guide though, and the other Pokemon mainly just being there to annoy him lol, anyone remember Haunter licking people to paralyze them just for fun?

NO I'M LITERALLY MAKING A KNOCK KNOCK/POKEMON BLOG THIS MINUTE oh my godddd

the only pokemon I had plans to give him was Purrloin because of the scrapped cat character. I'm not sure what else to give him if anything, especially if he's not a very avid battler. I wouldn't expect him to be? It doesn't seem like he'd like the confrontation, or the idea of his pokemon getting hurt. But I think he'd participate if he felt obligated to or felt like it was a "custom" or "rule" he ought not to ignore.

Ghosts are something I've been turning over in my mind because I'm not sure whether he'd like them or not. I think in general, regardless of his opinion, they'd be more drawn to him than they would be to the average human.

What were your thoughts?

Haha, expert timing! I love the thought of him having a Purrloin though, esp with the reference to the cut black cat, you share my thoughts exactly on how he would view battling 👀 always having his slippers stolen though…

I imagine his cabin in the woods would act more as a safe haven or daycare for Pokémon, I always considered his trainer title being Pokémon Breeder since he really prefers to just co-exist with them rather than use them for battling.
