What is Voguing?
Voguing is a style of dance that originated in Harlem, New York. It evolved out of the LGBT ballroom scene community. It gained its popularity by Madonna in her music video named “Vogue”. The style of dance has changed from what it once was known as.

History Behind Vouging
The dance was inspired by the magazine “Vogue” and the famous poses the models would do. Originally voguing was characterized by model-like poses with linear, angular, and rigid body movements. Currently, the style of dance has taken on a new form called “Vogue Fem”, which consists of five elements; the duckwalk. catwalk, hand performance, floor performance, and spins and dips. Vogue Fem is influenced by ballet, jazz, and modern dance. The intensity of the dance ranges from Dramatics to Soft.

Where Do You Go To Vogue?
Voguing takes place at balls, events where people in the LGBT community gather to have fun. There are several categories people are able to “walk” in, performance being one of them. New York City remains as the mecca of the vogue scene.

The Duckwalk
The duckwalk is one of the elements in vogue fem. The person is balancing themselves in a crouched position on the balls of their feet. Then they are supposed to kick one foot forward and then repeat the motion with the other foot. The kicks are supposed to go along with the rhythm of the beat.

The Physics Behind the Duckwalk
When you are in the crouched position before you kick out one leg you have potential energy. When you kick out one leg, some of your potential energy converts into kinetic energy. There is also static friction which allows you to balance yourself and to not slip. Additionally, there is an action-reaction force between your feet and the floor. When you kick, you push on the ground and the ground “pushes” back, which is why it looks like you’re bouncing when performing the duckwalk.

Mg and Fn are equal in magnitude and are action-reaction forces. The force applied is greater than the force of friction because despite there being static friction, you are still moving.
