Numbers carved into the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, Greece (first photo). The stadium was built in marble on top of the site of the ancient Olympic stadium in 329BC. It was renovated (maintaining original marble) in 566BC, 140AD and more recently in 1869 and 1895 in order to host the first international Olympic Games in 1897. I think these numbers were carved in 1869 or 1895 during one of the later renovations. In the second picture, ancient greek Attic numbers on the podium.

I decided to start documenting the historical type in my neighborhood of Brooklyn. The area is getting developed and many of these old industrial buildings are getting torn down. Here is my first post on the subject, all are early 20th century industrial signage found in Williamsburg Brooklyn.

Art Deco signage in Miami South Beach. The Art Deco hotels on south beach were built in the 1930’s during the depression and the signage was an integral design element. The bright colors though, were added in the 1980’s.

Custom three dimensional lettering and charming hand cut gold decals. I only wish the store was open. Rome, Italy.

Handmade sign at a corner shop in Nolita. There is so much to love about this sign but I think the ‘G’ is the best part.

Labels printed directly on the glass look cool and feel good in your hand compared to soggy paper labels.

Handmade sign atop LIXIES fish market in Port Huron, Michigan. My father is from Port Huron and growing up our family often drove out there. Signs like this used to be all over the midwest but are now more rare. I particularly like the z shape of the S.
