I think your confusion is based entirely on a difference opinion on what "Original works" constitutes. By adding the "fannish" adjective, you're immediately implying it's not an original work, it's a derivative work, based or inspired by something else. Which is fine. But it's not really "original" anymore, is it?
At the end of the day, A03 has an Original Works category that's not actually meant for Original Works. It's openly hostile to Original Works authors, because at the end of the day, the end goal of an Original Works writer is to: 1) Eventually get paid for their work. 2) Level up their skill to fulfill the above objective. 3) And most nefariously of all (in A03's eyes), build an audience to eventually sell their product to. And because A03 is a fanwork archive that must remain a non-profit at all costs for legal and ethical reasons. Ones I do not disagree with. I understand the necessity for their stance on Original Works. Because at the end of the day, A03 is the *largest* community of writers and readers on the internet, and people will inevitably try to use that as a way to advertise themselves or their works for profit.
I know this, *because I nearly did it myself* before reading the TOS. A03 allows Original Works while simultaneously not allowing it because they know an original works author can and will use their reach on A03 to violate the most important rules of the TOS.
While A03 states that it allows Original Works, it also simultaneously states that it can police what Original Work can be allowed.
Tumblr media
*Which is fine.* I understand where they are coming from. They are protecting themselves. But the TOS does explicitly state, "Original Works is allowed" and then provides legal language to say that they can also deem it unallowable and remove it at their leisure. A03 is very hands off where this is concerned, rarely to never enforcing it (to my knowledge), but they have included the framework to protect themselves in the event they feel the need to do a purge.
Wow, now there's a bot going around on Ao3 telling people that the "moderators" will delete works from "deprecated" fandoms and impose bans.
Fearmongering bullshit, but it's fearmongering bullshit that seems to be taking advantage of the recent spotlight series in order to trick authors into deleting their fics.
Just. Why.
What the hell does anyone get out of making these bots.

Actually, as someone who has read A03's TOS, original content is technically against their terms of service, but they allow it anyway. It's weird.

This depends on what your definition of "anime" is, because I've seen some people gatekeep it.
My first shounen series? Dragon Ball. No Z, GT, Super, just regular ol' Dragon Ball. But I've heard this one "doesn't count."
So, after that, I watched Sailor Moon (I had a kid sister who loved it, and even though I am male and more or less hetero, I enjoyed it). I've also been told this one "doesn't count."
My first anime movie was Ninja Scrolls. I was probably too young when I watched it. When people get confused and ask what Ninja Scrolls is, I try to explain it, and people get confused and think it is hentai (which, fair), I am once again told it "doesn't count."
Then we have X (also known as X/1999, but we're talking the series, not the movie or manga, so it's just X). I remember (and I'm dating myself here) going to a Blockbuster with my sister and picking this out, kind of curious as to what it was. We knew about anime (see: previous entries) and always wanted to get into it, and this was our opportunity. So we tried it.
My sister thought it was okay, but I loved it. It was melodramatic as all hell, prone to unexpected rains of cherry blossoms and feathers, had a plot barely held together with twine and a little gum, definitely visually influenced by other products of its time, and it completely falls apart in its final act (A trademark, I'd later discover, of a LOT of anime of the time), but its cast. Wow, its cast. I don't think I've ever loved a cast of characters before or since more.
And yes, I am aware that some of said characters are a little cliche-ridden, and one character in particular is a little YIKES on closer examination (looking at you, Kusanagi), but wow I loved this anime. I still do. I haven't watched it in years, and I'm kind of afraid to, because I worry it won't hold up.
Oh, and I'm Canadian.
That post about death note being "everyone's first anime" (untrue statement) made me curious and now I want to gather data for science
Can you reblog this and tell me where are you from and what was your starter anime?

I started a new writing project a few months back, and the site I am primarily posting on wants you to have a cover to go with your work. So, I commissioned an artist and had a cover made for a writing project I will never see financial recompense for.
And then I discovered nearly everyone else on the site is just using AI for their art covers. I've never been more embarrassed for a community.
A I "art" PSA
To fanfic writers, you can't go around being upset at A I companies scraping your work for their damn ChatFicPt only to turn around and embed A I illustrations into your fanfic. The A I "art" is also born from stolen uncredited work.
The artist reserve as much right to be upset at your A I "art" as you would be if your work is stolen and plagiarised without credit or payment. If you want illustrations, there are so many solutions:
1) just rely on the damn reader's imagination. We can assure you the reader has a very active brain and understands what you are saying without an illustration.
2) do edits. A well done collage of images (e.g. fancast of your faves, stills from other movies, stock images, screenshots) can establish moods far better than A I art. A I crap are at best generic as fuck and are most times off putting and uncanny.
3) collab with / commission fanartists. Your fic is worth it.

Question: What is the greatest magic of all? Answer: Friendship, right? [B]: The greatest magic of all is not friendship, it's chronomancy, the ability to control and warp time. If friendship were the greatest magic, look, it's a pet peeve of mine (...)

Because it's the cool new way kids bully each other now. It's hard to fight against a bully when they cloak themselves in self-righteous indignation. Also with the added bonus of feeling morally superior while you do it!
Please return us to a world where Notp and squick are used for a ship you don’t like instead of just making up a load of bullshit about how immoral it is or w/e lol

Piece of writing advice I've heard before, but have had to re-internalize for the millionth time:
Never write for what you think your audience wants. Only write for yourself. Anything you write only for your audience will never receive the thanks it deserves, whereas something you write for yourself will always be beloved by the only person that matters.

People used to comment on web comics.
People used to comment on fanfiction.
People used to comment on fanart.
People used to comment on OCs.
I hate "content" culture.
I hate "consuming content" and scrolling immediately to the next thing.
People used to be excited about the art that other people created.
People used to want to share that excitement with creators.
I hate this future.

You have to run the server, as you're setting what people in the server can use.
I dunno about anyone else, but the ability to report on "Feedback/New Feature Request" now seems to be removed. It's not an optional category to report on.
Discord has added generative AI features to servers.
Here are THREE THINGS you need to do today.
1️⃣ YOUR SERVER
Go into server settings -> roles -> Default permissions
Search for "external apps" and disable it
Tumblr media
2️⃣ YOUR FEEDBACK
Access Discord support -> https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
Go into Help & Support > Feedback/New Feature Request
Denounce generative AI and request the feature be removed. Bring up privacy concerns for yourself, your data, and for minors.
You will get an automatic reply to this request- PLEASE REPLY TO THE EMAIL TO PUSH IT TO THE TEAM or else it will get discarded.
3️⃣ ON MOBILE
Access your app store
Leave a 1 star review and publicly denounce generative AI and Discord's use of it
Reblog this to spread the word, I'm tired of the enshittification of the things I use in my day to day life.
