Again, yes to everything you mentioned!!! Holy quintet’s designs individually make so much sense to their backstory and magic and even as a group they are so much more visually interesting to me growing up.

It definitely feels like there’s more research and consideration in making their designs because of this (The way it even ties with their transformation sequences in rebellion and witch forms) and it feels like they all have a purpose… Lowkey Magia record girls feel like they’re created so that there’s a magical girl for every anime girl archetype (although they are trying to make a magical girl for every element but yeah)

I’m playing Madoka Exedra and seeing the other magical girls from magia record, it’s a little upsetting to see the gachafication.

I realized while talking about this that what makes Madoka designs so compelling is that they’re not all entirely feminine, which is very in theme with Madoka’s whole thing with subverting from the Magical girl genre. So it makes sense that they use “masculine” weapons, “masculine” style of fighting, use “masculine” motifs, I think basically a lot of the characters feel cool first before they are cute or pretty (positive)

I would be fine with magical girls that give the impression of sexy but it feels like 70% of the newer ones are all doing sexy 💔 so it’s not as fun as before

I don’t hate every magical girl design from Magia Record but there’s a lot of designs there that feel more like they understand the design principles from the og Holy quintet than the others if that makes sense

Since I’m on the topic of magical girl designs I don’t like with Magia Record, I just wanna say I’m so bothered by Felicia Mitsuki’s design because there’s so much potential with her. I get this feeling that they intended for her to be a viking inspired magical girl but it’s just not executed well OTL I would’ve really loved if they leaned into the viking design more

No no! These are the exact characters I had in mind when I think about who still keeps the design principles of Holy quintet too.

I am not against character’s being designed to be sexy at all, but I completely agree with you that there’s more tact with how the fanservicey design is handled with these particular characters.

It’s so true! So many of the designs feel like they want you to focus on the silhoutte of their body, rather than focusing on the distinct silhoutte of their outfit. Among the magia record designs I feel like Sana is the most “in theme” with Madoka’s visual language and has the same level of storytelling in the design like Holy quintet, I hope that makes sense somehow?

Again, it’s not even because I hate it when girls are showing skin but I just understand the story they’re trying to show (The contrast of a timid girl with a brave knight’s outfit, like that’s so interesting!)

Anyway I’m so glad there are people that agree because this has been bothering me for a long time! And I’m sad how so many of the new Madoka magical girls keep going into this Gacha game direction rather than the unique visual language of the original 😪
