Journal of a regular Med'Student
It's been a while since I started thinking : Maybe I should try blogging sometime, share my experiences, joys and maybe problems with the inhabitants of the "World Wide Web". Well, here goes nothing.
To start things off, I'm a 23 years old medical student from Morocco. What you guys should know is that Morocco adapts French as its second language so my English might just be ... Awful.
I lead a pretty regular life, I hit the gym when I can, I cook when I can and I play my video games when I can. But out of all these things, what I enjoy the most is studying medecine. It's a twisted love and hate relationship that most medical students can relate to I assume, we love what we do but at the same time we (I) HATE how time consuming it is. So after 7 years of going through hell (aka medical school), I've developed certain mechanisms to try and manage my time and get the best out of it. So for my first post ever, I've decided to share some of those with you.
Now I know what you might be thinking, You and I don't share the same lifestyle nor do we share the same hobbies, that's why I'll try and be as general as I can so you might pick a thing or two up, and who knows, you might find it useful.
So the first step is a no brainer, PRIORITIZE. I know how much you like your Sunday football games on TV or your Monday Rick and Morty episodes. But you should always keep in mind that you can't have enough time in a day (it's only 24 hours after all, and you need sleep on 8 of them and then work on 8 of them) to fit in all the pizza (aka hobbies. I love food. Don't judge). So better start prioritizing. Make a list of all the things you like to do, and sort them from most beneficial to less beneficial. Now don't get me wrong, beneficial could mean a lot of things, and what I mean by that is it can differ from a person to another, it's all subjective to you and only you. If you enjoy a show so much you feel delighted and satisfied after watching it, then it's beneficial. Does a certain activity help you relieve stress, then it's beneficial. Does a certain hobby help you improve as a human being, you got it, it's beneficial.
Now that you got aaaaall your stuff prioritized, time to organise it all and fit it in your schedule. Personally, I found that an oldschool calendar is the best way for me to do it, why is that ? Because when you take out your pen and srcibble notes on actual paper, it creates a certain bond of involvement in the task at hand, making you more likely to stick to it later on that day. But as I said, that's for me, you might find the use of your smartphone or computer more handy. Bottom line is : Find the best way to organise your day and stick with it.
Now this I where things get a bit harder : Commitment; It's easier to make plans than sticking with them for a long period of time. It will only get tough as time goes by, but there are no magic solutions out here. Be as active as you can and stick to your schedule. But don't get me wrong, this is not a stiff military program you have to apply to perfection, there is always room for change and adjustments. The key point is not to get bored, and for that you must not fall into routine. Flavor up your time schedule and try adding new things, new experiences. You don't feel like designing that logo, why not hit the gym instead this time or cook dinner ? Point is : Always be active, don't fall into boredom because it only bring dark times.
All that being said, these remain only few general tips of how I like to get-by. You might find them helpful as you might find them as tasteless as broccoli (No hate for broccoli lovers out there 馃槏). Each one of you is his own self, you're not a random copy of a book, you're your own book, write your story yourself and flavor it up the way you like it, that's what life is all about, individuality.
