Music is the medicine to many emotional ailments - the music you play directly and indirectly affects your listeners, be it on a mix tape, in the headphones, or in the club.

Always entertain your audience. Create a following whether you're a 100% request Dj, 50/50 request, or zero request Dj. Your audience will get to know you for what style you play and what styles you can play.

Handle your requests tactfully. You never know who is on the receiving end of a request you may not want to take. Make a short list of responses for requests you may not necessarily want to play.
Here’s a couple examples:
1) Sorry, I didn’t bring that record with me tonight. 2) I knew I forgot something. 3) Add it to this list of requests and I’ll see if I can get to it tonight. 4) That might work in a set I have planned for later, I’ll see if I can fit it in.
Avoid responses like: - hahahah, are you kidding me!? - you listen to that ____!? - _____, I don’t take requests! - would you like fries with that?

The Edison Phonograph - the world's first record player. In 1877, Thomas Edison discovered the process of recording sound by attaching a needle to the tip of a cone that was placed along a spinning cylinder that etched the vibrations of his voice onto the cylinder's surface. He then placed the needle back at the beginning of the etched groove to hear his voice, singing Mary had a Little Lamb. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonograph

Gauge your audience. Read your crowd by observing how they respond to what you play and when you play it. Follow their lead or capture their interest with the music. This is programming.
