There's something about atheism that I've repeatedly tried and failed to put into words on several posts on this blog but I think I finally got it.
Atheists are the only religious minority who, even (or sometimes even *especially*) in ostensibly progressive spaces are not allowed to ever act like they're sure of their beliefs.
#I have Thots about this that I may try and put into words later#but specifically the idea of new atheism as a reaction to bush evangelism#because I think that flattens it#SO MANY GWOT fanboys started as new atheists#in that they were looking to launder their islamophobia under a banner that allowed them to distance themselves from W#which isn't to discount the legitimate issues in American culture wrt how atheism is treated#but the GWOT stuff left a scar on its legacy that I think impacts the normie reaction to this day
