"we don’t get many strangers here" - //for a muse of your choosing :)
At first, the words didn't really register in his mind. Rai wasn’t someone who had a low alcohol tolerance, but he had been too lost in thought to really pay much attention to his surroundings. And that included noticing that someone was actually talking to him.
“Oh?” He still managed to give a sunny grin when he snapped out of his daze, setting his drink down and looking over at the brunette, “Well, I can’t say I’m a stranger to this place, but I definitely haven't seen you around before, miss.”

“Kick names, take ass.“ (with Touya pls)
Tomoe could only stare for a moment, as though trying to figure out a particularly difficult puzzle. In reality, she couldn’t tell if he was serious or just...Stupid.
“Try switching that around first.”

At his answer, the little blonde went quiet again, almost as though she was planning on clamming up once more. In reality, however, she was weighing the pros and cons that might come should she choose to go along with whatever the new stranger had planned.
Pros: She’d be able to get out of this stuffy room and eat food that wasn’t soup or weirdly flavored pudding.
Cons: If he was feeding her, he’d want something in return, because that was just how adults worked. And that something probably had to do with the questions the first guy had been asking her.
To be fair, some of the questions weren’t that bad. Her age, what her name was, where her parents were. Easy- she was almost ten (the truth), her name was Mihoko (mostly the truth), and her parents were dead (her mother sure was, but hell if she knew anything about her father).
But then there were other things. Where was she from, why did she run away, did she have any family in the village, did she come from another country, had she been trained in the shinobi arts, how long had she been in the forest-- on and on and on. If it weren’t for the fact that she knew her family wouldn’t bother reporting her missing, she would’ve been worried they had figured out who she was. That someone had recognized her. As it stood now, though, she was more or less sure they thought she was a botched attempt at a spy or something.
“...Curry. I’ll eat with you if it’s curry.” Mihoko eventually decided, the stubborn look on her face suggesting that she wouldn’t be persuaded otherwise. There was a saying that beggars couldn’t be choosers, but she wasn’t the one who needed something in this case. She was the one who might have something they wanted.
Not that she planned on promising to tell him anything, though. Food first, and maybe if he proved not to be an ass, she’d give a few answers.
#baby mihoko is too smart and stubborn for her own good#she hasnt gotten good at lying yet though so we'll see how this plays out

Had she actually felt bad for overworking her body and getting put into this position once more, she might have looked a little guilty listening to the doctor talk about shinobi having a difficult time readjusting to the more calm ways of civilian life, because that was exactly her problem. She’d been taught to sleep, breathe, and eat ‘shinobi’ since she was born, like a great many other people. Setting all of that aside wouldn’t be happening any time soon.
That being said, Tomoe didn’t feel very guilty at all. As much as she wasn’t looking forward to being scolded for this once she got home, it wasn’t anything she would apologize for. Injured or not, she wasn’t helpless- was she just supposed to turn a blind eye and let those merchants get robbed? That would’ve gone against everything she was taught.
“I’d appreciate that,” Prickly as she could be when it came to medics, she wasn’t a rude person most of the time. She understood that they were just there to help her more than harm, “Is there anything I need to do for the next few days to help? I can’t stay here- I have political dealings with your kage to see to.”

Rai certainly understood that way of thinking. As much as he tried to keep his mind away from that train of thought, even over ten years later there still wasn’t a day where he didn’t wonder how differently life could have gone had he not been taken. Maybe he would have died with his family, maybe they would have all run off together and still be a family. There were so many ‘what if’s’ and ‘maybes’ that it drove him crazy sometimes. Ari, at the very least, seemed to be taking a more healthy, positive approach to the whole thing.
Or he hadn’t turned into a nomad who was constantly searching for his lost family, anyway.
“... I don’t know if I can answer that without coming off as rude, mister,” the Uzumaki hesitantly replied after a few moments, even giving a soft laugh. For all they knew, soup really was the only thing his new shinobi friend was going to be able to cook with any type of success, but he didn’t want to sound discouraging, “Though it’s nice to know you plan on using a sickly, dying man who can’t run away as a guinea pig for whatever it is you come up with.”
He was only teasing, really, forcing himself to his feet soon enough. And while the world did spin for a good few seconds -was it spinning or was he swaying- he managed to not collapse all of a sudden. Whatever had been in that soup of Ari’s had made him feel better than he had before, that was for sure, but he was still more or less sick. Not nauseous, but he had a fever, or at least he’d guess as much if he was trying to self-diagnose himself.
All the same, he made it to the sink without too much issue. As long as it had been since he’d seen his mother, he knew that she wouldn’t be very pleased with him if he just left dirty dishes at someone’s house when he was their guest to begin with.

the king of crows, pt. 1.
dialogue prompts from the king of crows by libba bray.
and who might you be?
we don’t get many strangers here.
which way should we go?
only thing we can do is keep going.
something awful has happened.
what’s the big idea?
did you mean what you said last night?
what if i accidentally set you on here?
you’re not that charming.
doesn’t matter what’s true. it matters what people think is true.
that’s only a bad dream.
for the first time in my life, i got something to lose.
i know from experience that saying no to you is a full-time job.
i know this must be a shock.
what can i do?
i don’t go anywhere without protection now.
where were you? i was so worried.
i had to know that everybody was okay.
stop joking around. this is serious.
i’m very sentimental about the money.
rich, powerful people protect other rich, powerful people.
who died and made you boss?
i won’t have this bad energy in my house.
we have to at least try, don’t we?
they make the rules to suit themselves. and they change them to suit themselves.
feels nice out here.
something on your mind?
i’ve been wanting to tell you.
i like you but i’m frightened.
does love even matter in this mess of a world?
aren’t you going to say something?
seems like you’ve already made up your mind.

▬▬ι══════════════════════════════════════════ι▬▬
It’s right about now that Kono-- Mihoko was starting to regret trying to sneak out of the hospital. It wasn’t like she was trying to run away or anything, that would’ve defeated the entire purpose of running away to Konoha to begin with, but a person could only stay in their hospital bed for so long. Besides, she wasn’t stupid. She knew full and well that they weren’t keeping her in there because she was still sick (because she wasn’t) as much as they were waiting for someone to come and deal with her.
Unfortunately for the little blonde, while she had managed to escape out of her window, she hadn’t made it all of ten feet before some man had just appeared in front of her without warning. He was probably as amused with her escape attempt as she was with having it ruined, but that must have been enough to catch their attention since he’d all but dragged her over to this place soon afterward.
‘This place’ being some stupid too small room that had her picking at the freshly healed scar on her palm in an attempt to stop from being so jittery.
“I am not telling you anything.”
And Mihoko meant it, too. They had been trying for probably over an hour to get her to speak, to tell them anything- even just her name- but she’d refused thus far. And this had been going on long enough that the stranger’s patience was likely running out as much as her own was, or at least she’d assumed as much when he left and came back with another person.
If they thought numbers could intimidate her, they were wrong. The new guy didn’t even look very impressive- all he’d gotten from her when being brought in was a rather dismissive once-over before her attention went right back to the other shinobi in the room, brown eyes as sharp and wary as ever.
But then,
“Would you feel better if we tried talking over some nice food?”
Now that, admittedly, got the small girl to look back over to their new ‘companion’, pausing right before her fist looked out. For a second, it even looked like the idea had softened her up. Until she opened her mouth, anyhow,
“I’m not five. I know you’re trying to bribe me.”
If she was unimpressed before, her opinion of the new shinobi seemed to lower even more after that. And yet she didn’t immediately dismiss him again as she had last time, instead simply observing for a few moments. After months of being in the hospital and being on weird diets because of how messed up her body had been, offering real food ...was a better start than any of the other adults had managed.
“...What kind of food?”
#minato your last ditch effort might just work#mihoko is in defensive mode right now but she has her priorities#especially if it means getting her out of the too small room#she's a rude child i'm sorry you just got completely dismissed-

The Fire Daimyo had nine children with his wife before she was finally unable to have anymore. The birth order is as follows: Girl, Boy, Boy, Aratani, Girl, Boy, Girl, Boy, Boy.
However, rumor has it that only three of those children were biologically his, as his wife was allegedly a woman who took visitors late at night when her husband was working. There was never any proof of this, as paternity tests weren’t a thing and no one who was worth any merit actually caught her in the act, so no punishment or divorce followed. Nevertheless, it was an open secret that even the Daimyo himself was aware of.
The man was never outwardly cruel towards any of his children in particular, but he did show favor to some more than others, and of those he favored, Aratani was the one he loved most. From a young age, she had been close to her father more-so than her mother, and that never changed. It caused a rift between her and her siblings as they were jealous of the attention and favoritism she got, but none could truly hate her. She was a kind girl, the one it was nearly impossible to dislike.
Aratani was even allowed privileges that should have gone to one of her older brothers- sitting in during official meetings, helping her father make decisions about political situations, writing diplomatic letters. She was seen plenty around court and by the shinobi that visited the Daimyo’s estate and became a rather popular person due to that.
In the end, however, there was only one true use for a woman of her status: marrying for political advantage. Even her father’s favoritism couldn’t save her from the match her mother made with some well known man, so it was a fate she obeyed quietly.
But even she couldn’t help but be lead by her heart when it came to love, and if the end result was a bastard child and betraying her entire country, it was a shame she could die with without complaint.
Being her father’s favorite, one might think that her daughter, Mihoko, would have been treated with the same attitude. But the man mourned the loss of Aratani greatly and was even slightly embittered by her betrayal. It was much easier to simply ignore the child who had his little girl’s face than to interact with her at all. So while he knew of her fate at the hands of the rest of the household, he turned a blind eye.
Meanwhile, his wife was more disgusted by the fact that there was a bastard carrying their blood than she was saddened by the loss of her daughter. She might not have been a faithful woman, but she knew her place and wouldn’t have ever been so blatantly treasonous. Aratani brought great shame not just onto herself, but on the family as well, and that was something the matriarch would never forgive.
The rest of the family felt more or less the same about little Mihoko. Some still loved their sister and mourned her the way their father did, others mourned her and hated the child that took her away from them, and there were even some who were as disgusted and ashamed about the entire situation as their mother.
No one was ever quite brave enough to lay a hand on Aratani’s daughter, but not all of them tolerated her well either. Mihoko’s grandmother in particular would lock her in a small cabinet where they stored their teas and other herbs for hours on end when she got tired of seeing her around, or if they were having some important guest over. Some of her aunts and uncles would say vicious, barbed words that dug in deep, and one of the things that affected her most was when she would be outright ignored by the others. As though she never even existed.
Aratani might have been a kind woman that could forgive anything, but the same could not be said for her child. Years of being treated like this is what eventually lead Mihoko to being an angry, distrustful child who was more prone to snapping at any adult that approached her than to talking to them civilly.
#under the cut because i went deeper into this than i expected????#here have some sad mihoko lore for no reason#tw for child neglect#its nothing explicit but mihoko did not have a happy childhood#i was just randomly in the mood to write more about her past regarding her family so you guys get this#[You want a Fight/I'll bring a War] Mihoko Musings

That...wasn’t an answer he was expecting, honestly, and his surprise showed on his face. While he knew of sages and was aware that there were people in Konoha who could utilize nature chakra the same as anyone else could with another element, he’d never personally interacted with one. His work was in a completely separate category than whatever it is they’d be assigned to, and it wasn’t as though someone like him would go out of his way to interact with others, interesting abilities or not.
Yet as antisocial as Takemikazuchi might be, it is precisely because the woman was a stranger introducing him to something new that he watched her with rapt attention. He wasn’t the friendly sort, but he soaked up information like a sponge in water, regardless of the fact that she suspected it wouldn’t mix well with his own way of sealing due to it being specialized more for her. A person never knew when any kind of knowledge could become suddenly useful in the future.
“...You’re a very unique person.”
That was probably the closest the grey-haired man would ever get to giving a compliment, but as stilted as they might have sounded, the words were genuine. This was the first time he’d seen someone use nature chakra with seals in such a manner, and it was likely his first time seeing healing chakra- or any kind, really- of that color. Even his own lightning nature was blue.
“The seals I use feed solely on my chakra in particular to keep them from accidentally being set off by another person,” And to keep anyone else from being able to deactivate them as well, “So I understand your own only working with you. But I’ve never tried sealing with actual blood as opposed to ink, so I might have to experiment with that now as well. The new seals could possibly take better to it than to what I was using before and hopefully stay dormant long enough to get the effect I’m looking for.”
#trust me fam i have no idea what i'm doing either#i was abysmal at science so i am absolutely just going with ti#>:| IT

His question had been an innocent enough, hopefully subtle dig to try and get just a bit more information about everything, but he hadn’t expected Ari to react the way he did. It wasn’t anything dramatic or loud, but the way his expression changed and his face shut down was enough to let the younger male know he’d hit a rather sore spot. Rai was fairly positive he wasn’t being told the whole truth about what had happened, too, but he knew when to push for more and when not to. Curiosity aside, it ultimately wasn’t his business to stick his nose in.
“Some siblings just don’t get along with one another,” the Uzumaki managed after a few moments of uneasy silence, giving a tired smile, “My little sisters got into fights with me all the time, and they were even worse with one another. It’s just a family thing, I guess.”
Granted, he and his sisters had never been that bad. They just acted like kids were prone to- stealing one another’s things, tearing up each other’s toys, generally being a nuisance to everyone. It was only natural that with four children who had their mother’s bloodline in them, there would be plenty of fights going on at any given time. It had just about driven their parents crazy, trying to corral all of them and instill some sort of manners and ‘proper’ behavior, but they didn’t have as broken as a family as he suspected the shinobi across from him had. Even with all of their fights and trouble-making, they had loved one another fiercely, and at the end of every day had more or less forgotten they were even fighting to begin with.
Of course, that had been years ago. Long enough that he had lived more of his life without them than with, and for all he knew, they could have become totally different people. Mio could be some sweet housewife, Nozomiko a sullen shinobi, Shizu an upbeat businesswoman. There was every chance that they didn’t even remember who he was- they’d been just about to turn five when he was taken. And there was also every chance that they were no longer alive. He’d learned first hand what happened to people with ‘exotic’ bloodlines, and his sisters had always had more of their mother in them than he did.
But those were thoughts he didn’t like to focus on. It was much easier to just remember them as they were and ignore the ‘what ifs’ that had plagued him since the day he’d discovered them gone.
#ari reliving his family trauma made rai relive his as well LMAO#rai is here for all the good things but now its just internally commiserating#'broken family' 'yep' 'me too fam'

“Wrong on both accounts.”
He’s less than impressed.
For such a loud mouth, Rakurai sure is quiet.
“I’m a top with every person, thank you.”
She doesn’t want to answer either, but her red face is probably answer enough.
