Cassini prepares for final orbital “Grand Finale” at Saturn.

Erik Wernquist, the same filmmaker who created 2014’s “Wanderers” and a stunning New Horizons promotional film in 2015, has created a new video highlighting NASA’s Cassini mission’s final days at Saturn. The Cassini spacecraft will begin its final series of orbits to cap a 13-year groundbreaking science mission known as the Grand Finale. For the first time ever in Cassini’s time at Saturn, the spacecraft will fly in between the planet’s rings and atmosphere. No spacecraft has ever before flown in this region of any of the solar system’s ringed planets. After 23 orbits, Cassini will dive into Saturn’s upper atmosphere September 15 where it will be destroyed. In 2008, mission managers explored a range of End of Mission scenarios that would protect Saturn’s moon’s from Earthly contaminants before ultimately deciding on atmospheric reentry. Cassini began her End of Mission manoeuvres on November 26, 2016, when it began the first of 20 ring-grazing orbits. A close flyby of Titan April 22 will alter the spacecraft’s trajectory to begin the first of 23 orbits in the Grand Finale, which will begin April 26.

Cassini launched from Earth on October 15, 1997, and entered Saturn orbit June 30, 2004. Six months later, on January 14, 2005, the European-built Huygens probe attached to the spacecraft landed on Titan, becoming the first probe to land in the outer solar system. Originally scheduled for a four-year mission ending in 2008, Cassini received two mission extensions in 2008 and 2010, with the latter ending in 2017. i’ve been thinking about sam and trying to figure out why she’s… not a good person and i realized that i isolated her behavior to how she acts towards her friends and didn’t really look at the influences on her.

when i was thinking about the relationship between danny and his parents, i realized that sam and her parents actually have a very dysfunctional and abusive relationship. her parents want her to be someone that she’s not and refuse to respect her or relent their opinions despite the distress it causes sam. they attempt to control her life by trying to force her into clothes they like versus the clothes she’s comfortable in; they will actually harass her to the point that she has to physically remove herself from her home; and they try to restrict and control who she associates with (see control freaks, reality trip, and reign storm). danny and tucker have never been to her home even though they’ve been friends for years and when they are invited over, sam’s parents aren’t around. sam knows her parents will disapprove of her friends, so she never let them meet tucker or danny. because of this, whenever sam is at home with her parents, she probably is under a great deal of stress and feels extremely isolated. she always has to be on the defensive because she is being emotionally attacked and manipulated by her parents.

which is a problem because sam cares a lot. she cares about the environment, she cares about animals, she cares about individual rights and autonomy, and she really cares about the people who care for her. but the problem is that she’s so used to being aggressive and defensive about her interests and who is she, that she naturally lashes out and gets embarrassed or worried when she lets her guard down. she’s fast to judge harshly because it’s how she protects herself. and she drinks in every time she gets a “win” because it means she actually has control of something. that’s why she is probably so active in so many charities, works out, and is at fentonworks all the time - she’s trying to stay in healthier environments. (and also why she’s not an a-lister - they so similar to her parents)

i just… really want to apologize to sam now. you’re not a horrible person, kid, you’re just trying to get by the only way you know how.

Open Roleplay - Karaoke Night

Why did Sam decide to go do karaoke?  Because why not?  It’s not like there was anything better to do at home, and she wasn’t about to stick around to greet her parents’ rich friends again.  Because, you know, having her own flesh and blood judge her every move was bad enough...having people who mean virtually nothing to you talk down to you is just sad.

So here she is, at that gothic bookstore that she visited so much.  After the poetry disaster, they decided to try something slightly less...doom and gloom.  Of course, a majority of the song choices were not all that cheerful in themselves.  Not that it mattered...not many people visited that bookstore anyways.

When her turn came, the owner was a tad bit apprehensive about letting her perform.  After the incident with Kwan, he had to make sure that it wouldn’t happen again.  Of course, Sam assures him that Kwan was at the core of that problem...and that he wasn’t going to be accompanying her any time soon.

As she steps onto the small stage that was always present, Sam looks out over the ‘crowd’...a grand total of maybe 5 or 6 people.  Folks don’t go to book stores to hear music...obviously.  Her eyes momentarily stop on your muse, but it seems she is simply counting heads.

Adjusting the mic. and turning up the music on her phone, she begins - her song of choice being this one in particular. Whether your muse sticks around to listen...well, that’s up to you.

Whenever you wanna go, man-

Weekends without homework were always nice.  And a certain goth girl had taken it upon herself to leave the house and get some fresh air.  And by leave, I mean sneak out early in the morning before her parents can come and wake her up themselves.

The very thought made her shudder.

She knew she’d be lectured about it when she got home, but she honestly couldn’t care less.  It’s not like she was leaving town - as much as she would like to anyways.  But, she’d eventually have to go back and she knows it.  So she’s gonna enjoy this while she can.

Not really having anywhere to go in particular, she almost automatically made her way to Danny’s house.  At least the Fenton parents were a tad less...insufferable.  They certainly didn’t treat her like she was destroying her life anyways.  

With her purple spider bag slung over her shoulder, she walked up to the door and rang the bell...she’s wondering if she should have called first. Oh well...who knows, maybe this would be a pleasant surprise for Danny.

Danny, Sam and Tucker developing their own language, it mostly being a blend of Ghost and Esperanto and gibberish. They use it to communicate to each other without anyone else knowing what they’re saying, when they need to speak about private things, communicate battle tactics without the enemy knowing what they mean, or just to annoy people. 

and then they take it a step further and start speaking in codes in the trio tongue. brief shorthand to get info across quick, like “d7 to mark2-0-K down 9 at count.” the trio are gamers so it’d be similar to how they plan plays, only quicker.

and everyone thinks they’re crazy for having this made up language. Dash teases them because “Didn’t you know you were supposed to grow out of kiddy playing, you dweebs are regressing. Wonder how long till the diapers come into play again.” and they just. talk about how dumb Dash is. right in front of him. because Dash can’t understand. and they laugh about it. and it pisses Dash off. It gets to the point where the trio speak nothing but their own tongue when they’re not in class. they develop a written form of it using ghost letters but they change which letters are assigned to which sounds and combine some letters to form new ones so if even a ghost tried to read what they write it would just be absolute nonsense on top of a language that it wouldn’t know.

Jazz tries to get Danny to teach her, but he refuses because he doesn’t want to confuse her. Teach Sam and Tucker how to speak the handful of ghost sounds that humans couldn’t really replicate had been hard enough. Valerie is confused by the new behavior, but quickly becomes suspicious when she overhears and recognizes a few words being spoken by Phantom.

Jack and Maddie steadily get more and more worried about this kind of behavior because they even speak it to each other when they’re all together in their house. Sam’s parents Blame the Fenton’s for corrupting their daughter by teaching her devil tongues and they don’t believe Jack when he tells them that the language wasn’t Ghostspeak. Tucker’s parents try to not mind but it starts to worry them too. all three sets of parents try to ban the Angela by way of grounding or the threat of not allowing them to see each other anymore, but that just causes the three to shut up. and not say anything, secret language or otherwise. so they eventually just agree to let the kids continue to speak the language though they’re not happy about it, but for their part the trio do cut it down a considerable amount.

Danny accidentally writes part of his papers in the language. Mr. Lancer is beyond done. 

And Vlad just doesn’t even try to understand. Danny tries to annoy him with it but Vlad just ignores him. When Danny doesn’t stop, Vlad begins speaking back to him in an equally nonsensical, fake language, one that he, Jack and Maddie made back in college. it becomes a virtual nonsense conversation because they keep talking to each other but they have i no idea what the other actually means. sometimes it evolves into arguments other times its surprisingly calm and they seem to communicate well. Danny uses every chance he gets to insult Vlad. Vlad uses the opportunity to reveal, in detail, his exact future plans right to Danny’s face.
