For Claudia, Lestat's influence will always linger. "That's his daughter," Hayles said simply. "He doesn't need to be a ghost. He's in her."

Transcendentalism is dead. It’s still relevant when it comes to understanding the self, but it’s outdated in that its practices of isolationism and complete self-reliance are extremely problematic. Isolation is deeply damaging to the average person’s mental health. Humans are extremely social creatures and to forsake that aspect of our lives is plain disadvantageous to any person who practices such. Personally, I think that if I were to practice transcendentalism the way that Thoreau did, I would do well for a few days. I would eventually start to miss my friends and family however. I would mourn the loss of socializing with others.
The aspects of transcendentalism I find good however is its emphasis on confidence and loving yourself no matter how “good” or “bad” you may be. To accept yourself and your faults is something that we have lost as a human race and perhaps, we never had that ability to begin with. To develop that ability however would be beneficial to everyone. To live shamelessly has its faults of course, but shame is ever pervasive in western culture. To live in a world without shame and where people are completely secure in theirselves, sounds like paradise and hell.
