Finding the right mixers and shakers for your lab
Any laboratory that requires homogenization of samples before testing is incomplete without laboratory mixers and shakers. Laboratory mixers and shakers are the instruments that assist the user in the formation of a homogenized mixture by dynamic agitating and mixing of samples. These instruments are applicable in various industries such as pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, and beverages. Furthermore, shakers and mixers are widely used in laboratories such as wastewater treatment, biotechnology, pathology, and life sciences.
Laboratory mixers and shakers include orbital shakers, vortexes, rockers, rollers, and rotators.
Here are a few essential Mixers and Shakers for your lab
· Vortexers
Vortexers are commonly used blender instruments that move in a circular motion. Vortexers are used to mix small vials of liquid. It includes an electric motor with a vertically oriented rotating shaft. The driveshaft is attached to a cupped rubber piece which creates a cushion or pad-like structure. As the motor runs the rubber cushion or rubber pad oscillates in a circular motion. When the test tube interacts with the rubber pad or touches the edges of the pad, the motion gets transferred to the liquid in the tube, resulting into vortex formation. Vortexers come with variable speed settings ranging from 100 to 3200 RPM. They are ideal for cell suspension in cell culture, and microbiology laboratories, for mixing of reagents, and dilutants in biochemical laboratories. Vortexers give uniformity and speed and make the mixing process more comfortable and accurate than manually. Many vortexers also come with temperature regulators.
· Orbital Shakers
Orbital shakers are used for culturing of microorganisms, general mixing, electrophoresis gel staining, and washing blots. Orbital shakers come with two parallel planes to the work surface. They rotate along with the two planes to create circular shaking motion. Orbital shakers do not generate vibrations. They create low heat during the circular motion which enables orbital shakers ideal for microbial culturing. These instruments usually lodge microplates, large flasks, microcentrifuge tubes, and gel trays.
Orbital shakers can be further modified to incubator shakers by adding incubators to it, to make them suitable for bacterial incubation with optimum growth conditions.
· Rotators
Rotators move in a circular motion around an axis. Traditionally rotators were designed along the plane of the work surface. They were used for the rotation of samples. Now-days, rotators are arranged in a wheel orientation. Each sample achieves 360° rotation resulting in more force, and sample dispersion. Rotators are used for sample mixing in molecular biology, clinical testing, and biochemical laboratories.
· Rollers
Rollers are the mixing instruments that are applicable in the mixing of blood samples, solid-liquid suspensions, and sticky substances. The unique design enables rollers to offer gentle mixing of collection tubes. They accommodate sample tubes in a horizontal stationary position for rotation between rotators. They are perfect for clinical labs, research labs and other laboratories where even a slight tube spilling could be dangerous.
· Rockers
As the name suggests, rockers mix the liquids by swinging back and forth. They offer very low agitation, and gentle mixing, unlike the high-speed shakers. This quality makes them ideal for tissue fixing, incubating tissues, and cells as during tissue fixing for incubation, it is very crucial to keep tissues intact without disruption. Rockers are also applicable in blotting applications and in blocking as both the procedures demand careful handling. Rockers offer secure and slow rocking motions enabling proper adherence of blot.
There is a huge variety of shakers and mixers available in the market. They are available in different configurations including capacity, duration, speed, slope, etc. While selecting the right mixer for your laboratory it is necessary to consider the nature of samples used and type of procedure being performed along with the size, and volume of the sample. Find out the exact speed of motion and direction that suits your sample, type of process and the desired feature of the device before final selection. This small study will help you to get the right equipment for your laboratory.

Digitalization Can Help SMEs Grow With Less Investment
If SMEs can choose the right marketing strategy even in low budget they can at least cover a portion of the growing market
In the past decade, we witnessed a big digital boom in every sector of business. Not only direct B2C consumer business, even B2B finds it useful to digitalize their business. In the New Year 2020, we can expect at least 60 per cent of industry players to go digital. Due to the government’s push for ‘Make in India’, we have many small entities coming up with the skills to manufacture specialized products. Usually the small entities, SMEs, come with a huge technical potential but have the constraints of a low marketing budget. This makes them weaker in the highly competitive market where we already have big local as well as imported brands. At the same time, the market keeps growing as more investment gets directed into research and development. So, if SMEs can choose the right marketing strategy even in low budget they can at least cover a portion of the growing market. Digital marketing would be the best bet for branding with low investment. Here are a few essentials for SMEs to go digital.
Company website
Creating a company website with details of the business, specialization and products or services should be the first approach, and it can be done in a few thousands invested just one time. Professional videos and photos can be helpful to develop a professional website. It is an efficient way to create online visibility for the company and develop a certain level of confidence on the company in all new visiting customers. Clear information about the business and products can attract more customers across the globe.
E-commerce portals
Listing your products on e-commerce B2B portals could be budget friendly and offer better online visibility for the brand. Many B2B portals are now established in the niche sector of lifesciences and laboratory industry. These portals already have a good online reputation and targeted visitors from the industry. SMEs can take advantage of these portals by listing their products here to grow their business. Usually the portals charge a few thousands for unlimited listing, or first few products also get listed free with just a minimal commission applicable on every sale. Payment gateways associated with these e-commerce portals also helps to make convenient and secured transactions between the buyer and the seller.
Google search engine
When it comes to online business, the first mode of acquiring customers is through Google search engine. If your products get showcased in the top 5 results of Google search, you stand a much higher chance of gaining new customers every day. To get yourself in the top 5, you need to work on the SEO, i.e. search engine optimization of your website. This can be done by adding unique and relevant content to your website, images with alt-text, link building and other SEO related activities. In addition, you can create a Google business page, which is easy and free. You can add details of your company, add photos, regular updates and ask your customers to submit reviews online. Whenever a customer looks out for you, they would be able to see your Google business page. It helps in creating a brand impression to the online audience as well as generates leads in the long term.
Social media
Business pages on social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram can be a good way to have online presence and generate leads, if used effectively. There are various ways to interact with your customers on social media at essentially zero costs except for access to the Internet. Facebook also has a marketplace wherein you can list your products to sell online. Usually it works well for daily consumer products. Social media platforms are growing in terms of number of users every day and can be effectively used to interact with many customers without the need to visit personally on-field.
WhatsApp
WhatsApp is the one of the widely used communication app which has a presence in almost every country. Businesses can utilize the free calling and messaging feature on WhatsApp to interact with customers across continents, develop relationships and convert leads to orders. It’s a good way to talk as well as promote your offers to customers. The only requirement is to know the contact number of your customers.
These are just a few essentials to begin with at a low cost. There are many more modes of digital marketing such as webinars, online advertising and blog, among others, which can be employed to grow business digitally at low costs. Digitalization has the power to target your products to the right audience with less investment and still get worldwide recognition. Knowledge of digital media along with creativity can help SMEs to grow and shine beyond expectations.

ET Healthcare Interviews Biomall’s Founder – Dr. Jhaveri
Life science forms the basic backbone of the healthcare industry, there are chemical, microbiology, molecular biology, cell culture and chromatography products.
Shahid Akhter, editor, ETHealthworld spoke to Dr. S. Jhaveri, Founder & CEO of Biomall.in, Mumbai, to know more about the challenges in the procurement of products in life sciences industry and how platforms can be created to ease the supply chain. Trends and Challenges
In the Life Sciences industry, we have research and development of drugs, pharmaceutical products. The testing of these products, clinical trials and after approval, manufacturing and production are directly fed into the healthcare industry. So, life science forms the basic backbone of the healthcare industry, now we are mainly focused on the R&D part where there are a lot of different products. There are chemical, microbiology, molecular biology, cell culture and chromatography products. Typically a scientist or researcher would require all these products in a timely manner to do any fruitful scientific research and produce results. Typically, all these high-end products are imported from countries like US, Germany, UK and other countries. Then they are imported into India and supplied over here. Long time back these companies used to appoint distributors in India and these distributors would then promote the products, get orders, place an order to the company in US or UK and would get it supplied. As the industry grew these companies started to set up their shops and teams here, however the way the Indian purchase systems exists, they still need to appoint the distributors. In these cases, the salesperson would go to a scientist or researcher, enquire about the kind of product they require, then the scientist after getting an enquiry would send the quotation to the buyer who would then typically get it from two or three vendors. After negotiations, the order is confirmed, intended is created, a purchase order is generated and after which the dealer or supplier would then take these products from the principal company supplier and get paid after 4 to 8 weeks if they are lucky.
This entire sale purchase cycle is anywhere between 7 to 10 weeks right from the salesperson entering the lab until he gets paid. It’s a very lengthy process and what is happening currently is by the time Indian scientist or researcher gets the products into his lab somebody from countries like the US would have already complete their research. This is a major issue and very critical so unless we solve it, we will continue to lack behind in the research and development.
Lab Products and Market Opportunities
It is a 100-billion-dollar market, there is a huge opportunity for aggregators as all of this information is on one platform from where the buyer can select from different types of brand, different types of product on a real-time basis and what kind of offers are available. Additionally, most of the products, as I said, are imported from all these countries and if you look deeply, a lot of these multinational companies are actually sourcing these products from India and China. They are labelling, branding and marketing it so well that typically people end up buying these products at much a higher price. So there is an opportunity showcased for these manufacturers on to the platform, where they can give these products at a much cheaper price without investing much in marketing. Biomall.in Journey and Growth
Biomall initially started as a distributor of life sciences products and big brands like Thermo Fisher scientific, MP Biomedical and Eurofins scientific. After being in business for around three years, we realized that the supply chain was very broken. When I was studying in USA and having completed my PhD in chemistry and chemical Biology in the USA, I used to order all these products online and I would get my supplies in three days. When I saw that the supplies were taking so much time, we thought that there is an opportunity for us to have an online platform where we can aggregate all these products and supply chain can be greatly reduced. With that vision in mind, we started as the competitor portal as the e-commerce market grew, we converted our platform into e-commerce market place where buyers and seller can buy and sell the products on a real-time basis. Biomall currently has 1000+ products, 150+ brands across 100+ categories, we have delivered the products to 400+ cities in India and exported the products to 40+ countries, which is a great achievement. We have been able to showcase the number of Indian manufacturers who have never sold abroad. We have now exported their number of products in different countries and given them great global exposure. In future, we plan to expand these categories and bring in lot more sellers on to our platform and promote this and market it aggressively across different markets worldwide. More and more people can be benefited by the quality manufacturing done in India at very affordable prices and at the same time help the Indian buyer gets the product in a timely manner. This will enable their research productivity efficiently without any time lags, be at par with the global scientists worldwide and help the Indian seller reach the worldwide market. That is the aim in future. We also aim to raise the funds so that we can grow exponentially and benefit millions of buyer and seller across the world.

Dr. Jhaveri talks about Biomall to Bangalore Insider
What made you start your startup and what problem does it solve?
The majority of scientific laboratories in India still follow the traditional system of inviting multiple quotations, followed by indenting, generation of purchase orders and payment to suppliers 30-90 days after delivery. A single purchase-sale cycle thus lasts for months. Even the rate contract system, wherein a vendor is chosen for a particular brand at the start of the financial year, is inefficient as the institute has to rely on a single vendor who might not have stocks readily available and cannot purchase from any other vendor who might have stocks for the required product. Typically a lab buys products from multiple brands so again they need to contact multiple vendors and a lot of time is invested in procuring day-to-day lab supplies. So while a lab in India would take months just to get their supplies; elsewhere laboratories in countries with more advanced purchasing systems would have already completed their project by the time supplies reach the scientist’s bench in India! This is a critical factor that needs to be addressed immediately else India will further lag behind in terms of innovations. Also, inefficiencies in systems lead to increased costs and so scientists spend not only more time but also more money to purchase lab products!
Based on this analysis and the growing consumer inclination towards e-commerce, he (Dr. Jhaveri) found an online platform connecting buyers and sellers of lab products to be a perfect solution to tackle the current problems. Thus, in mid-2016, he launched India’s first online marketplace for laboratory products – Biomall.in.

B2B e-commerce can help Indian chemical manufacturers get global
The chemical manufacturing industry in India ranks 6th in the world for the production of chemicals and contributes about 3%of global chemical sales. It comprises basic chemicals, agrochemicals, petrochemicals, fertilizers, dyes & intermediates, specialty chemicals and many more. The global demand for chemicals is expected to grow annually by about 9% over the next five years. India has a surplus of small to big manufacturers for chemical products that are capable enough to meet the growing demand. So, having equipped with the supply, it is time to utilize online business tools and grow on a global scale.
Today’s buyers are comfortable with going online to search for any product or company. They seek out information about the products, company websites, and articles talking about the company. The generation now demands easy and efficient ways of doing purchases and business. Increased transparency, easy availability of product information and easy mode of online transaction simplifies the process of sales to a great extent and saves buyers a lot of time. For any customer to buy a chemical online the basic information of chemical structure, composition, CAS No and purity is required. When all of this information is provided, customers can easily find the chemical they require and then buy it online. This is much different from consumer goods, where touch and feel of the product are preferred before buying it online.
Due to the above reasons, an online presence has become mandatory for every small to big manufacturer or distributor in the chemical industry. Online reach is very high, as compared to the traditional model of sales, which involves personal interactions with customers. For the supplier, online business demands less investment and offers more profit. Suppliers face zero payment hassles as the transactions are done online via secured modes of payment.
B2B Marketplace
The last five years have witnessed the development of a few B2B marketplaces that focus only on the online sales of chemicals. These e-commerce websites customize their platforms to suit the needs of chemical buyers. They have already invested in marketing of their website so that thousands of customers visit their website every day. The websites save a lot of time and effort for the customers in buying any chemical from a supplier placed anywhere across the world. They offer cost-effective packages for sellers to list and sell their chemicals online on their website. The process requires less investment and basic digital knowledge to list and maintain their product inventory. Digital marketing tools and other options offered by such websites can be employed to increase brand awareness and reach more customers across the world. This is easier than having one’s own e-commerce website, which requires significant investment, dedicated personnel, and continual maintenance. Also, by listing products on such marketplaces, the marketing cost can be greatly lowered and thus the sellers can offer competitive pricing.
Logistics: A major challenge
Unlike consumer goods where logistics is relatively easy, delivering chemicals safely is a major challenge. Also, different countries have their own set of rules and regulations for importing chemicals. So, one must be aware of the customs applicable in all the countries and accordingly manage the customs and logistics for international orders. Usually hiring an agency to manage exports can simplify the process.
Although India has the technology resources to manufacture chemicals, our share of the global chemical supply is just 3%. Selling online on e-commerce portals can greatly help to increase India’s contribution, and if done rightly, it can be the biggest move for Indian manufacturers to get global within less time and low budgets.

Money control talks about Biomall’s online platform
In a one-to-one interaction with Money control, our founder explained the objectives and goals of Biomall, and it’s benefits to scientists across the world. Money control summarises it well in an article:
Rajan Prabhu, a process scientist at a research and development centre of a pharmaceutical company, is looking to buy some acids and solvents, for a parenteral formulation he is developing. However, he isn't too happy with the supplier, who he feels isn't giving him the materials for the right price. On a friend's advice, Prabhu tried Biomall, a first-of-its-kind online marketplace for laboratory, life science and diagnostic products. He registered with the portal and placed an order for the required materials, which he received within a week, thus enabling him to begin his work without further delay. Scientists, research fellows and professors can now buy their laboratory requirements online through Biomall. Products from multiple brands can be procured by a lab user located in any part of the world in a single order. The platform offers a wide range of products including laboratory chemicals, microbiology, cell lines, cell culture media and kits, chromatography, genomics, proteomics, diagnostics products as well as different kinds of laboratory equipment and supplies. Buyers can place an order or even request for quotes directly from manufacturers and distributors, thereby getting the best price along with the latest and most accurate information. Biomall offers the researcher search tools, side-by-side product comparison, category search by application and other dynamic features to ensure that minimum time is spent in trying get all the product-related information. "One of the reasons for Indian scientists and researchers' low scientific output is the time it takes to get the materials, while their counterparts in Western countries like US and Europe, would complete their scientific work by that time," said S Jhaveri, Founder of Biomall, explaining the genesis of Biomall. Jhaveri, a doctorate in Chemistry and Chemical Biology from Cornell University, US, founded Biomall in mid-2016. After working for his family, he started his distribution business for laboratory products under the company Chargen Life Sciences. Before starting Biomall, Jhaveri studied the lab industry market deeply and analysed the problems faced by laboratories, only to find that there isn't any e-commerce platform connecting buyers and sellers of lab products. He decided to launch Biomall to address this gap. Biomall helps in price discovery of lab products, help manufacturers, especially India-based ones, to launch products and also avoid middlemen to the maximum extent possible and passing on those savings to the end-customer. Jhaveri made sure that in addition to selling products at discounted prices, the online portal caters to scientists providing up-to-date product information and the latest happenings in the industry. "Biomall ensures that the researcher gets complete, up-to-date information from the web portal without referring to multiple catalogs and dealing with multiple vendors. In a nutshell, Biomall is a one-stop solution for scientists, designed by scientists, to get complete, accurate and the latest information for lab products and technology at their fingertips," Jhaveri said. Biomall currently sells lab products in 35 countries, servicing 300 cities. The platform hosts over 100,000 lab products from over 150 brands across around 100 categories of laboratory, life science and diagnostic products. It has about 5,000 buyers and over 500 sellers, including multinational companies. Jhaveri said so far the company is bootstrapped, and would be soon exploring possibility of raising funds to invest on technology, logistics, and expansion to newer markets.

YourStory article featuring Biomall.in
In the world of research, scientists are often bogged down by the time taken to procure high-priced materials needed for experiments. But now, there is a business-to-business (B2B) online marketplace that wants to create a platform for the convenience of these scientists, where the entire process of buying and selling has been made seamless.
Biomall.in, the Mumbai-headquartered online portal is focussed on laboratory, life science, and diagnostic products. Founded in 2016 by S Jhaveri, the platform aims to be the one-stop-shop for anything that is connected with research materials.
Jhaveri, who holds a PhD in Chemistry and Chemical Biology from Cornell University, US, was always keen to understand the entire dynamics of this industry. Hailing from a family who was into the business of chemical manufacturing for a long time, Jhaveri became a distributor of scientific products eventually.
Though he was always keen on starting an online venture, given the buzz around ecommerce in India and his positive experience of procuring things online for his research work as a student in the US, it has helped him to do so.
“I felt that it would be a good time to start in the B2B space for laboratory and scientific products, where the buyers could interact with multiple vendors on a single platform,” Jhaveri says.
The start
The initial idea of Biomall.in was to help distributors of these products in liquidating their stocks. Later, he realised that a lot of brands wanted to partner with the startup. This was the beginning of the online marketplace as a bootstrapped venture.
Jhaveri says, “It is a tedious process for any research or educational institute to source these products, as they have to get multiple quotations. And, by the time they get their products, it takes about seven to 10 weeks.”
At present, Biomall.in completes the entire process in seven to 10 days. The platform hosts over 100,000 products from about 150 brands, across 100-plus categories such as chemicals, lab equipment, consumables, microbiology, diagnostics, molecular biology, chromatography, etc. Jhaveri was very clear that he would not hire salespeople to generate business, and everything would be done online. “What we are trying to build is something for the future, where the convenience of buying or selling is seamless,” he adds.
Interest from non-metros
Interestingly, the variety of buyers who come onto this marketplace are the smaller research institutes, diagnostic labs, hospitals, and educational bodies from Tier-II and III cities.
Jhaveri says, “Scientific products are not for touch or feel. All you need is the specifications, and we have noticed that our customers from Tier-II and III locations are more inclined to buying online.”
According to Jhaveri, the established organisations have set procedures that generally act as an inhibiting factor to procure from the startup’s site. It also has IITs, IISER, and IISC among its clientele.
As the entire process is online, it is a win-win situation for both buyers and sellers. The buyers get to see a range of products online, while the sellers get timely payments.
Helping Indian manufacturers
After being operational for a little more than three years, there were still a few positive surprises for Biomall.in. It started receiving a lot of inquiries from the export markets, and this has, in fact, helped the small manufacturers from India.
“I never thought that we would get orders from overseas markets, and we are now helping the Indian manufacturers to reach a wider customer base through digital marketing,” Jhaveri says.
Today, Biomall.in generates around 60-70 percent of its business from the overseas market, while the rest is from the domestic buyers. It has reached to over 300 locations within the country and 35 countries overseas. The business model of Biomall.in is very similar to any other ecommerce marketplace, where it charges a commission on the transaction conducted on the site.
On maintaining the quality of its products which are available on its platform, Jhaveri says. “Being a distributor, we understand this market very well. We do not onboard any supplier on our platform just like that, and always ensure that they have good quality products.” These measures have ensured Biomall.in getting into the high growth trajectory. Over the last year, this online marketplace has recorded over 100 percent growth in business from both the overseas and domestic markets.
“A lot of our buyers are coming back to us, which increases our repeat business. Also, there are a lot more research institutes that are sourcing from our platform. It is a good indication of our journey till now,” Jhaveri says.
Way forward
Biomall.in does not have any direct competition, but other horizontal B2B marketplaces including Amazon also sell diagnostic and research laboratory products. In fact, its biggest competition comes from offline dealers. On the future plans, the founder says that it will onboard more Indian suppliers who are essentially the manufacturers. “Earlier, we were focussed on bigger brands, but now, we have expanded our horizon to smaller companies, and we also help them to tap into the overseas market,” he says. According to Jhaveri, Biomall.in is a profitable operation, and the initial funding was largely from its offline distribution business. “We never went for outside capital, as I first wanted to understand how this works. Now, we are looking to raise funds,” he concludes.
