Komaeda's "Love" For Hinata - A Musing on KomaHina
There’s this thing that this fandom likes to do in regards to the relationship between Hajime Hinata and Nagito Komaeda. More to the point, they interpret Komaeda as loving from afar with the ultimate goal to get his hands on those Hinata-tas, you know what I’m saying?
I don’t put blame on the fandom itself, though, because you can’t really do that when concerning a character like Nagito Komaeda.
Komaeda is … well, Komaeda is … ? Strange. Complex. Confusing. There’s a lot of adjectives that I could put here and even then it doesn’t entirely sum this guy up. Not only that, there is a lot of complex variables that affect his behavior; childhood trauma, frontotemporal dementia, emotional reservation—the list goes on for a while.
In short, he’s hard to understand—but that doesn’t mean he can’t be understood. At least in a general sense. To start off, examine Komaeda’s mental state. I called him ”insane” earlier and I acknowledge full on that that wasn’t right of me—in all honesty, I was rushing and didn’t quite have my thoughts in order.
Komaeda is, no doubt, extremely intelligent. He is able to plan and has incredible both deductive and inductive reasoning skill. In all of the Class Trials, Komaeda comes to the conclusion of who the killer is long before Hinata even has a general idea in his head. He asks questions for the purpose of leading people into his line of thinking, and to hear different answers—not because he actually needs an answer.
Mentally? He’s exceptional. Socially and emotionally? Not so much.
His social and emotional behaviors have led people to the conclusion that he is insane, but it’s not quite the answer. He’s not insane, he’s … Komaeda is … deluded. He’s stuck so far into his disturbed world view and detached emotional state that he comes off that way. Strange. Crazy. Odd. None of which he can help, mind you.
Moving on from that, let’s focus on the points concerning Komaeda’s and Hinata’s relationship:
Komaeda, as a character, has not had a single, true friend for probably the entirety of his life—outside of a childhood pet that was run over and killed right in front of him.
During marchen-v-friendhof’s translation of one of his Dangan Island events, having Hinata suggest hide-and-seek to him has Komeada respond with
Tumblr media
Considering what we know about him and that he been alone for a large period of his life, it’s my speculation that the children he was playing with just simply forgot about him, or tricked him into believing they’d let him play.
As depressing as that speculation is, it’s believable considering what we know about him. After the death of his parents, Komaeda had led a completely hopeless, friendless existence. He’s said so himself—before coming to Hope’s Peak, he pretty much just ”drifted” through life.
To put it simply, Komaeda sees Hinata as more than just ‘his friend’. He sees Hinata as the first person who has treated him like a legitimate human being since probably the death of his parents. To say that Komaeda loves Hinata is believable and, to be honest, completely true.
Now let’s go over what I’ve just reviewed
Komaeda is somewhat “crazy”.
Komaeda loves Hinata.
Both of these are completely factual—however, this does not mean that Komaeda has an unhealthy, crazy love for Hinata. His love for Hinata is completely healthy.
I don’t mean ”healthy” as in ”not gay”, I mean that it’s entirely human nature for Komaeda to come to the conclusion that
Hinata is nice to him.
Hinata tries to understand him.
Despite upsetting Hinata repeatedly, Hinata still takes time out of his day to go see him.
He sort of kind of likes Hinata more than just him being a Hope’s Peak student.
Moving on further, it’s no secret that Komaeda has had a completely traumatizing and sucky life. To put it into a summary,
Faithful pet and best friend run over by a truck while still a young boy.
Parents killed right in front of him while still in elementary.
Kidnapped as a middle schooler and held for ransom, but was let go when the kidnapper realized he was completely worthless.
No friends to speak of.
Diagnosed with later stage cancer.
Diagnosed with an incurable, horrible neurological disease that makes you suffer while slowly killing you. It also makes it impossible for you to effectively communicate with people, or fully understand emotion.
This kid has been through some things, alright, and as a result of that Komaeda is heavily emotionally withdrawn. To put it as simply as I can, Komaeda has no earthly idea how to communicate or relate with his peers anymore.
To give an example: every time Komaeda is being an ”asshole” to Hinata. Playing from Hinata’s perspective, yes, it’s understandable to think that Komaeda is openly harassing him and being mean, but that isn’t it.
When Komaeda says “just kidding”, he means it. He realizes too late that his attempts to try and tease/joke around with Hinata make him instead look like a complete asshole.
                                       ”Komaeda is Gay”?
Concerning the emotional trauma this kid has been through, I really don’t think that Komaeda is emotionally able to make the decision for sure that he is either straight or gay—all he knows, or really cares about, is that he loves Hinata.
It’s never implied that he wants to kiss or do anything romantically appropriate when concerning Hinata, but just that he likes to be around Hinata. Even if Hinata so much as looks at him, it makes him happy.
                    The Infamous ”Daisuki” and “Aishiteru”
Coming from an American who’s native language is English and has spoken nothing but it for the last 18 years—Japanese is confusing. Translations are never set in stone because there are so much ways a specific thing can be interpreted. Now throw a character like Komaeda into the mix? We’re going to be here a while.
In Japanese, there are a lot of different ways a person can say ”like” or ”love”—all of varying degrees. Koishiteru, aishiteru, koisuru, daisuki, suki—
Based on my limited knowledge of the language, “koi” can be interpreted as more of a passion than love. Suki and daisuki have a literal translation of ”I like/I really like you”, so it’s more gentle and … casual, I guess? “Ai” on the other hand pretty much means true love. I think.
If you take the time to do Komaeda’s Free Time Events, and listen to his Drama CD which is pretty much a compiling of all his events, Komaeda uses a lot of these. He uses suki, daisuki, and—the ”nail in the coffin”—aishiteru.
It’s pretty safe to assume that what Komaeda feels for Hinata is ”true love”.
However, that does not mean that Komaeda is truly in love with Hinata, as in from a romantic standpoint. He just loves Hinata. It’s completely different way than what this fandom likes to interpret. He’s not necessarily in love with Hinata—he just loves him.

Kokichi Ouma Character Analysis: Chapter 4 and Grey Morality
Tumblr media
So a quick disclaimer: Yes, I am very aware that this is most likely not canon, or at least not what the writers intended on being canon, nor am I saying that this is 100% canon and should be considered as such. This is just a fan theory/analysis I came up with for my own enjoyment and wanted to share with others, as I like coming up with theories/analysis posts and reworking canons to make enhanced stories and character development in my perspective. I firmly believe that the idea of making theories isn’t supposed to be a shouting contest to see which opinion is the most loud and correct, but should be something to share with others and find acceptance and understanding in different interpretations, even if you don’t agree with them.
I want the disclaimer here to be taken extra-seriously as I know for a fact that this topic within itself is one hell of a problem when it comes to Kokichi’s character. This incident and series of events is what makes or breaks Kokichi’s character for a lot of people. People who see Kokichi’s character as nothing but up to no good be warned; this post is not for you.
However, the said can be said for those who think Kokichi can do no wrong. I may call Kokichi a “precious cinnamon roll” but in reality, the scale of his sins during Chapter 4 is impossible to ignore, especially when it’s such a huge deal that it carries over into the rest of the story of the game. There’s a lot of divide over whether or not Kokichi is a pure saint or pure evil, when in actuality, human beings are far more complicated than black or white, good or evil, and that’s sort of the beauty hidden within this case. Morality is crushed to the ground and stomped on until it’s borderline unrecognizable.
So without further adieu, let’s begin the analysis, and talk about Kokichi’s fall from grace and into a despair so miserable that it ripped him apart.
WARNING, THIS POST IS VERY LONG. Only stop to read it when you have a good amount of time to do so.

The Boku No Hero Academia Vol. 3 Light Novel is finally out and contains a chapter focusing on the Fantasy AU from Season 2 Ending 2! One of the biggest reveals in this chapter is that the Dragon that Bakugou is riding in the Fantasy Ending sequence IS ACTUALLY KIRISHIMA. The context is that Deku and Co. are heading to battle against some strong opponents and come across Bakugou with a fire breathing dragon. Bakugou then tells Deku he wants to tag along, and the translation is as follows:
— Bakugou: I’m coming too. Defeating these men of valor just means that the person who does so is super strong, right? I’m going to fight them and win! Deku: EHH? Umm…it’s okay if you tag along with us, but if that dragon also joins us then that’ll be a little… The dragon listened carefully as soon as he said those words and suddenly morphed into the appearance of a young man. As the others cried out in surprise, there stood before them a young man with red hair who was smiling. Kirishima: Me? I’m half dragon half human! The name’s Eijirou. It’s not going to be a problem if I come along looking like this, right? Anyway, let’s get along! Eijirou, brimming with courage and bright personality, lost against a one on one duel to Katsuki and ended up becoming his servant as a result.
T/N: PLEASE SCREAM WITH ME AS WE BLESS THE CANON THAT IS DRAGON!KIRISHIMA.  Read the entire chapter translated here! Purchase the BNHA Vol. 3 Light Novel here! Scream with me on Twitter!

No.6 (2011)

However, Shion—an elite resident of the city-state No. 6—gained a new perspective on the world he lives in, thanks to a chance encounter with a mysterious boy, Nezumi. Nezumi turned out to be just one of many who lived in the desolate wasteland beyond the walls of the supposed utopia. But despite knowing that the other boy was a fugitive, Shion decided to take him in for the night and protect him, which resulted in drastic consequences: because of his actions, Shion and his mother lost their status as elites and were relocated elsewhere, and the darker side of the city began to make itself known.
Now, a long time after their life-altering first meeting, Shion and Nezumi are finally brought together once again—the former elite and the boy on the run are about to embark on an adventure that will, in time, reveal the shattering secrets of No. 6.”
