His footsteps are getting nearer. How could he have followed her so easily? She’d been running fullstop, yet his pace is casual and relaxed

A branch snaps somewhere nearby, and the sound kicks some sort of dormant instinct into hyperdrive. Kie feels overwhelmed by the sudden urge to flee from her hiding spot and run again – he’s close, too close. She’s the prey and he’s the hunter, and she needs to put more distance between them.

She takes off again, body moving with a sudden burst of speed as she pushes off from the tree she’s hiding behind. A glance spared over her shoulder reveals nothing. She doesn’t see him anywhere – maybe he wasn’t as close as she thought?

In the next moment though, she hears a crunching noise – leaves being crushed beneath heavy feet. The hair on the back of Kiara’s neck stands, and she can’t stifle the nervous giggle that bubbles out of her.

Fuck – she hated to admit it, but she was having fun.

She whips her head around, pausing by another large tree to search behind her once more. She rests a hand on the smooth bark, eyes scanning the area.

Nothing but shadows and greenery – trees, grass, leaves.

No Rafe in sight.

She breathes a quiet sigh of relief.

His hand slams against the trunk beside her face, and his voice is suddenly in her ear. “You’re not very good at this, are you?” he growls.

A shriek bounces off the forest around them. Kiara realizes belatedly that it’s coming from her when the sound abruptly cuts off as he presses his palm against her mouth. His hand is so big he’s got most of her lower face covered, fingers wrapped around her jaw.

He uses his grip on her face to drag her against him, his other arm snaking around her waist. It’s instinct that has her struggling breathlessly, trying to break free, even though she knows it’s pointless.

Even though she doesn’t really want to get away.

Rafe presses her back into his chest – strong, solid, weathering the storm of her thrashing easily. There’s the low rumble of a chuckle as he presses his face against her neck, still holding his hand over her mouth

“I didn’t realize you running from me would be so fucking hot.” His breath is warm as it fans across the skin of her neck, and she whimpers. “Should’ve guessed, though. Everything you do is fucking hot.”
