Long, Long Lived~
IV. "The Kings & The Queens."

The air is crisp, birds chirping peacefully—
until Y/N comes speed-walking down the sidewalk.
They’ve got a piece of toast hanging from their mouth, their bag swinging wildly, and their jacket half-zipped like they lost a battle with the zipper in the dark.
Heizou took a slow sip of his coffee, a grin tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Huh? Isn’t that Y/N?” he said, nudging Kazuha with his elbow and tilting his head toward the chaos unfolding across the courtyard.
Kazuha looked up from his phone, eyes following Heizou’s gaze. “It is,” he said simply, lips twitching in amusement.
Y/N stumbled mid-hop as they tried to clear a puddle, windmilling their arms in a desperate bid for balance. They barely avoided a full face-plant and quickly glanced around, checking if anyone had seen. A single leaf clung stubbornly to their hair, unnoticed.
Heizou chuckled under his breath. “So your interesting little thing is here,” he said, voice low with teasing delight. “Why is she running like her life depends on it?” His smirk deepened. “Doesn’t she know there are no classes today? We’re literally setting up for the festival.”
“I think,” Kazuha murmured, watching Y/N with quiet fondness, “she forgot.”
He slipped his phone from his pocket, fingers tapping swiftly over the screen.

“L/N,” the teacher said, voice sharp but not unkind.
I looked up from my desk, only to immediately regret it.
“What’s the point of the introduction,” she continued, holding up my paper, “if I only find out what you’re talking about in the body?”
My ears burned. I looked away awkwardly, already shrinking into my seat.
“You should improve,” she added, handing the paper back to me with a neutral expression. “Try practicing more after your after-class errands.”
“Yes, ma’am,” I mumbled, gathering my things and trying not to trip on my way out of the room.
And now, of course, I had to clean an entire hallway again—because what’s a bruised ego without some manual labor to top it off?
I made my way down the corridor, broom in hand, preparing to sweep in front of the student council room… and then I froze.
Wait.
Kazuha’s in the student council.
I felt my soul leave my body.
“What will I do if I suddenly see him after that post? AUGH.”
So I did what any panicked, overthinking academic gremlin would do—I moved like a ninja. A very, very bad ninja. Quiet steps. Eyes darting. Back flat against the wall like I was about to rob the literature section of a bookstore.
Don’t see me, don’t see me, don’t see me.
I pressed myself against the cool wall, dragging down dramatically.
“Why did I have to grab the attention of that poetic demi-god who singlehandedly wins every competition to exist?!” I whispered to no one.
Then, lifting my arms to the ceiling like a Shakespearean ghost, I cried:
“Shakespeare! Dostoevsky! Verlaine! Please lend me your spirit so I can pass this essay writing…”
“If you’re summoning dead writers, maybe add Bashō to the list. He was pretty good with words.”
I froze.
Turned.
Kazuha stood a few feet away, arms crossed loosely, watching me with a curious, amused smile—like he’d just caught a wild creature mid-monologue.
Y/N:
...You heard that?
Kazuha (gently):
All of it.
A beat.
I considered melting into the floor.
The floor, tragically, refused.
“I’m sorry you had to see… all that.”
I quickly dusted off my uniform, hoping to salvage the last 2% of my dignity.
Kazuha just gave a soft laugh—gentle, amused, way too kind for someone who just witnessed a full literary breakdown.
I turned to leave, eager to disappear.
…And immediately tripped over absolutely nothing.
Just air.

I sighed, waiting for Yoimiya and Ayaka to arrive at the café. Their festival preparations were taking longer than expected, which left me plenty of time to stew.
I couldn’t shake my teacher’s critique from earlier. Maybe it was time to take her advice seriously and practice more.
I muttered under my breath:
“Shakespeare, if your ghost’s not busy, I could use a sentence. Just one.”
A voice came softly from behind me:
“You call on every writer but never think to ask someone living.”
I froze.
No. No, it couldn’t be. Not again.

III. "With our shaking hands."

Y/N’s POV
I slouched into my seat, barely managing to keep my eyes open. The teacher was babbling on about the upcoming English Month events, and I could already feel my energy draining faster than my phone battery. I swear, every year it’s the same—talk about the events, force us into groups, then compete for grades. At least no actual lessons are involved, but the stress of the events? Yeah, that’s definitely my least favorite part.
"This will also serve as your project. 60% of your grades will be based on the competitions you choose to join." The teacher said, voice stern like they were handing out a life sentence instead of a project.
I glanced at the list of events she was writing on the board.
Y/N’s Inner Monologue
Movie Exhibit. Character Parade. Speech Choir.
Please, no. Not the group projects. Please, don’t make me do public speaking. Anything but that.
Y/N’s Inner Monologue (cont'd)
Impromptu Speech
Spoken Poetry
Oh no. That’s a disaster waiting to happen. My mouth will probably freeze up the moment I’m asked to speak in front of anyone. The thought of stuttering in front of random people makes me want to crawl under the desk. I peeked at the competition list again, trying to figure out which event was least terrifying.
Y/N’s Inner Monologue (again)
Essay Writing. Not ideal, but at least I don’t have to speak in front of anyone. I can do that! I’ll take it.
In Another Classroom – Kazuha’s POV
Kazuha’s class, same time.
"English Month’s approaching," his teacher announced. "Kaedehara, you’re joining the Spoken Poetry competition, right?"
Kazuha smiled gently. "If you believe I’m suited for it, I’d be honored."
His classmates lit up.
"Let’s gooo Kazuha!"
"You’re literally poetry in human form!"
"Our class is SO winning this!"
He chuckled modestly. "I’ll give it my best."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later, as I tried to focus on my thoughts, a conversation drifted through the hallway.
“Did you hear about Kazuha joining the poetry competition?”
“Yeah, everyone’s been buzzing about him.”
“Some say it feels like he’s speaking right to their hearts when he recites.”
I know Kazuha, or at least his reputation. He’s that steady presence at every opening ceremony, the kind of person who doesn’t just say words — he breathes life into them, making everyone feel like they matter. His voice isn’t just nice; it lingers, settling deep in your chest like a quiet promise.
They say he’s been winning gold medals since elementary school—effortlessly, like it’s second nature.
And here I am, drowning in my own self-doubt. People say my writing’s good, sure, but good never felt enough. I’m always... just okay. Never the best, never the loudest, never the one anyone really notices. Someone else always shines brighter — stronger, more confident, more gifted.
Sometimes, I can’t help but wonder if I’m trapped in place, like I’m stuck somewhere between being the best of the worst and the worst of the best. Like I’m clinging to the edge of a plateau, looking up at the summit I’ll never reach.
What if this—this quiet, frustrating mediocrity—is all I’m ever meant to be? What if I’m not meant to be the best?
Suddenly, a soft voice startled me.
“Are you okay?”
I looked up to see Kazuha standing quietly beside me. His eyes were calm, but filled with concern.
“Y-yeah... I just zoned out for a moment. I’m tired,” I admitted, feeling my voice crack a little.
He studied me for a moment, then smiled gently. “That face... it looks familiar, like I’ve seen it before.”
He moved his hand slowly, hovering protectively over the emergency button nearby, as if shielding it from whatever I might do next.
Is he teasing me?!
“Yes, I’m fine,” I tried to say firmly.
He chuckled softly. “I’m just joking. The hallway’s already clean — you can go home.”
“Yeah… thanks.”

II. "Remember This Moment."
──────── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ────────
The next morning, I was summoned to the guidance office for questioning.
"So, Ms. L/N, Y/N," the counselor began, eyes serious. "What was going through your mind when you pressed the emergency button?"
I swallowed hard. "I’m really sorry. I... I don’t know why I did it. I wasn’t thinking clearly."
As punishment for pressing the emergency button, Y/N was assigned to clean the school hallways every afternoon for two weeks.

I swear, my muscles are two seconds away from snapping my bones.
I don’t usually move when I study, so this hallway-cleaning life?
Yeah. Surprise workout. My body is in full betrayal mode.
I drag myself to the shower. Hot water. Brief peace.
And then it hits me—
Homework.
My soul exits my body.

Kazuha recalled the moments before the incident.
“She stopped walking.”
There was a distant look in her eyes, like she was halfway between here and somewhere else.
“Caught in her own head again.”
Then, without warning, her hand lifted — hovering near the emergency button.
A sharp click. The alarm blared to life.

Long, Long Lived~
Tumblr media
I always overthink. My mind is plagued with never-ending thoughts.
I want to excel in my class. I want to be better than before. I want a change.
How hard could that be, when I'm just a student running out of time?
If only I could end it all with the push of a button—
[eeeeeeecccccckkkkkkk]
The sharp sound yanks me from my spiral.
The emergency alarm.
"Everyone in the school, don't panic! Make sure your class evacuates safely!"
What did I do?!
My intrusive thoughts…
I pressed the emergency button.
