Today, December 1, the Cultural Arts Building at UNCW joins museums, galleries, and arts institutions around the world to observe Day With(out) Art. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The first Day With(out) Art was organized by Visual AIDS* in 1989. Coinciding with World AIDS Day on December 1, it was a call for action and mourning that would draw attention to the devastating impact of AIDS on the arts community. Hundreds of museums and galleries participated in the one-day moratorium on exhibitions, shrouding works of art and replacing them with information about the virus. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thousands of arts institutions and organizations around the world continue to unite on December 1 to demonstrate the power of art to raise awareness about the AIDS crisis, which is far from over. Since the onset of the epidemic in the early 1980s, 79.3 million people worldwide have been infected and 36.3 million have died of AIDS. Graduating senior, Olivia Froelich, has a solo exhibition at UNCW’s Boseman Galelry located in Fisher Union. The closing reception for “In Divine Image,” is this Friday December 2nd from 5-6 pm at the Boseman Gallery. It is an open reception and all are welcome to attend. Her artist statement is below: “Throughout western history, a human has acted as reference in portraits of God and Their saints. In Dürer’s Self Portrait as Christ, or Gentileschi’s Self Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the artist modeled a divine figure. If one can look into the eyes of God by observing man made works of art, then there must not be such a vast separation between divinity and humanity. I am inspired by my ever-developing relationship with God and religion, as well as my interest in figurative art. I explore the oneness of divinity and humanity while creating each of my works.
