UNDERGROUND MUSIC POST #3
10-8-22
In this post, I will discuss a not-so-underground artist, A$AP Rocky. Rather than ranking his discography or talking about one specific album, I will discuss individual songs.
Originating from Harlem, New York, Rocky is a commonly known name in the music industry. His "psychedelic rap" sound sets him vastly apart from other mainstream artists. One of the main songs where this is prevalent is "Excuse Me" on his "AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP" album which was released in 2015. The song starts with trippy vocals that hit your ears in a different style than a "normal" rap song. Through the 1:20 of the song it almost seems as though Rocky is having a conversation with someone/himself. Once 1:21 hits, the flow of the song switches. Rather than it sounding like he is talking to someone else/himself it sounds like he is now speaking to the audience. He is telling a story throughout this song. This song definitely hits differently when wearing headphones so I suggest you throw the best headphones you got on, turn the volume up and see what you can make of this song!
The next song that I will discuss is from the same album. The song is titled "West Side Highway". The skeleton of this song has a very Kid Cudi-like sound to it. Rocky takes a soft gentle approach with his voice in this song and we can hear that while he sings the hook. He does have a feature on this song, James Fauntleroy. Fauntleroy adds some incredible background vocals that make you feel like you are listening to this song while chilling on a cloud. The beat of this song really carries the attention of the listener. The bass line as well as the hi-hats really drive the beat into your head. Rocky clearly had fun making this song and he proves how versatile he is.
The last song I will talk about is "CALLDROPS" which is off of his "TESTING" album. This song starts off in a wild record scratch fashion. The beat is playful but also calm. He has samples running every so often serving as background noise. At about 1:28 in the tune, you can hear Rocky take on a deeper, artificial voice. It helps suck the listener back into the words that are being said. At 1:33 the song takes an interesting turn. We are able to hear a conversation between Rocky and the feature on this song, Kodak Black who was in prison while they recorded this. It is not unique to add a conversation between rappers who are on the outside and rappers that are on the inside. However, with that being said, Rocky was able to use the prison recording and implement it in the beat as well as using his voice to adlib Kodak's voice. While it might throw some people off hearing how Kodak's voice recording is muffled and a bit hard to hear, Rocky and his writers/producers knew exactly what to do to create a very memorable song.

UNDERGROUND POST #2
10-7-22
Today we will discuss some of the top rising talents in the underground music world with under 10K followers on IG. These artists are indeed "underground". While some of these artists have a strong community of listeners they are only steps away from breaking through.
The first artist we will look at is Chris Cart3r (IG: @chriscart3rmusic ). Cart3r has 7+ singles and EPs out on all platforms. One of his top songs "Lost" features M.I.C. as a guest artist. This track touches on the love that seems to be lost between two people. While Cart3r touches on topics of love, longing, curiosity, and desire in this specific track, he is not limited to the range of other themes ... which he displays in the rest of his discography. Cart3r has new music dropping on 10/26. This is a highly anticipated EP/LP where he demonstrates his ability to create a wide variety of different sounds. Cart3r was kind enough to send us four of his unreleased songs that will be featured on the album. To say the very least, we are excited. There is so much to look forward to on this project. One of our favorites is a song titled "Had it all". This is a slower track than what we are used to with Cart3r, but nevertheless, this song is straight from the heart. We won't go into much more of the unreleased music because it is not ours to share... but be on the lookout for it (dropping on 10/20/22).
Another artist that is making a name for himself is Mati (IG: @matis.mp3 ). Mati is a Minneapolis-based rapper with a ton of flame. With only 3 singles of his own out now, we have a lot to look forward to. His tune "Back to the basics" touches on his early life and the different hardships that he faced. He takes on two different voices in this tune. He has a higher, melodic tone when singing the hook and takes on a lower tone of voice when talking about some of the more serious moments in this song. The two different voices could symbolize his growth throughout his life. Another track that has caught people's attention is "Please don't tempt me". If you haven't heard it yet... go check it out. We would classify this song as an "instant add". This slow track says a lot about who Mati is as an artist and how versatile he is. We are excited to keep track of him as he is making his way through the industry. Mati has new music coming out on 10-14-22 and we highly recommend checking him out before he blows up.
These two artists are featured on our Instagram page @underground_mus1c be sure to go check us out and follow us there for more new music every day!
