STD Awareness Month
Tumblr media
April is STD Awareness Month!
Sadly, there is no way to avoid the statistics: the number of reported STD cases are at an all-time high, and if you are sexually active, you are at risk of infection. So what can you do to help lower these frightening numbers? We need to arm ourselves with facts and information about STDs and to talk with a medical professional (available both in person at UND Health Services or through our online app).
Since April is STD Awareness Month, now is a great time to take control of your own sexual health by getting and staying informed. The CDC has a great STD Awareness Month website that has many different resources for both the healthcare providers as well as those individuals who are at risk or may be affected by STDs. For sexually active people, STDs can compromise their health. Getting tested for STDs is the only way for a sexually active person to be sure of their STD status and stop the spread of STDs to their different sexual partners. The possibility of having co-infections, which means having more than one STD at a time, makes it especially important to get tested for all of the most common STDs on a regular basis.
STDs often have symptoms that mirror other diseases, making it difficult to diagnose if an STD isn’t being looked for specifically. Many STDs are accompanied by flu-like symptoms, such as a sore throat, fever, muscle aches, and swollen glands. These basic symptoms make it easy to mistake an STD for a cold or flu. Some STDs are completely asymptomatic, meaning they show no symptoms at all.
Most STDs can be treated easily with minimal side effects if detected easily and quickly, but others, such as syphilis, can cause severe complications or even death if left untreated. In the case of incurable viral STDs like HIV, hepatitis, or herpes, the infections can be managed with medication, but become more traumatic and life-threatening if left untreated for too long.

Hey UND,
SAY YES, GET THE TEST!!
Americans get around 20 million STDs every year... and young people actually end up making up HALF of those cases. Even with these crazy statistics, still, fewer than 12% of young people say that they have been tested for STDs in the past year.
Don't be afraid of getting tested... STD Testing is quick and painless, it's usually just a quick swab or pee in a cup. Testing is also confidential if you want to keep it to yourself, you can. No one needs to know. Testing can also be free or cheap. Most insurance covers STD Testing, and on campus, we will be having a few free STD Testing Days. All in all, it is better to get tested now, rather than later. It becomes a problem when STDs go undiagnosed. Take chlamydia—it can lead to a serious condition called a pelvic inflammatory disease that can cause infertility when left untreated.
Come out to student health today, check out our mobile app, or call to make an appointment!!

UND students, come out and get tested! One in TWO sexually active young people will get an STD by 25 and most won’t know it. Come out and get tested so you aren't one of the ones who doesn't know. Be SAFE, not SORRY
Most people think they would know if they had an STD... Well, that's actually not true. The truth is that many STDs have no signs or symptoms. The only true way to know if you have an STD is to get tested! Many people get confused or scared when it comes to getting tested for an STD. Some people might think that an annual doctors visit will be enough testing for their health when in all honesty it's not. If you have had any sort of unprotected sex, or have a new partner (or more than one partner), or for any reason, you might be nervous about being exposed to an STD, come into UND Health Services and talk about getting tested for STDs. You can also check out our mobile app. On the app, you will have the ability to make appointments, chat with real on-call medical professional, find some information on STDs and even different fun facts.
