"I would like to get rid of the homophobes, sexists, and racists in our audience. I know they’re out there and it really bothers me.”

On this day in music history: September 26, 1984 - “Purple Rain” by Prince & The Revolution is released. Written and produced by Prince, it is the title track and third single from the film and soundtrack album. The song is recorded live at First Avenue in Minneapolis on August 3, 1983 (along with “I Would Die 4 U” and “Baby I’m A Star”). The show was benefit concert for the Minnesota Dance Theater and also marks then nineteen year old guitarist Wendy Melvoin’s first live performance with the band. After the initial live recording, a string section will be overdubbed on to the end of the track in late August/early September of 1983 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, CA.  It will also be edited down significantly from its original length, removing one entire verse and guitar solo from the song. The single will be backed with the non-LP B-side “GOD”. Featured in the film as a brief instrumental interlude, the single will feature vocals by Prince. The extended instumental version will only be released on the European 12” pressing of the single. In the US and many other countries, the 7” and 12” pressings of the single will be pressed on purple vinyl, with the 7” edition coming packaged in a translucent plastic sleeve with a still image of Prince from the film on the front. “Purple Rain” will peak at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on the R&B singles chart on November 17, 1984, and is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
