I love how Brennan has decided that Wealwell is a weirdness onion that can be unpeeled layer by layer for laughs. And the touch of Goldbeard's gold is actually fantastic - it gives him a kinship with the dreamers of the Zephyr over his repo man brothers. Not to mention the blessing of Zac's "Pappy flashing back" face.

^ In one day. Which is kinda the point here-and why I can be pretty critical of how we see the same things over and over and over in Medieval style fantasy media.

No writer or creator is limited by history or “historical accuracy”.

Anything you can possibly imagine has a historical precedent.

I would say I have a pretty good understanding of translation politics for someone who’s monolingual and so I understand that the volume 5 epilogue suffers from ‘choices made by the translator are factually accurate but change the whole vibe’ syndrome. The maxcleod things for me is that it’s so fun that for all tense and purposes they should swap roles. Max privately educated and rich should be playing the low level clever 6 steps ahead character and Oelthra granddaughter of the adventurer of all tm and daughter of two combat ready sovereign citizens should be the one going to blood lust and taking wild risks, grappling with the (so far) big bad. But it’s not! These two are both obsessed with adventure and longing for something more than where they were raised! And they both do it in a way completely antithetical to how they were raised
