Every single one of the Gotch brothers could be getting crazy sloppy back shots every night and it wouldn't matter as long as it was from a person of respectable status - but Maxwell is in the fight pits with the randoms and the normies. He's voluntarily entering spaces where his class status is secondary to his physical prowess. Yes the gay jokes are fun, but that's not the POINT of the character.
