I want to create characters and make them all individual and their own but every time I try, I completely blank

Why is it that in almost every D&D group I’m in, SOMEONE wants to have a joke character. And no, I don’t mean like a choatic neutral bard or something, I mean a goddamn chicken. You wanna be a fucking chicken??? A CHICKEN???

I SPENT SO MANY HOURS CRAFTING HOMEBREW RACES, AND CLASSES AND SHIT AND YOU WANNA BE A NORMAL FUCKING CHICKEN WITH A BIG SWORD??? REALLY???? REALLLLYYYY????

So no, I don’t really mind bards.

After a year of watching CR, the cast’s panels and the Between the Sheets interviews… I think I can safely say that the most important lesson I’ve learned from them is how life-changing it can be to surround yourself with good people.

Surround yourself with people who are open and vocal about how much they love and admire you, who call themselves your biggest fan and who are there to support you through your path to greatness.

Surround yourself with people who enjoy their own interests unapologetically, who genuinely seek for the things that will make them happy and who are not restrained by what people will think of them. 

Surround yourself with people who aren’t afraid to show affection through words or physical gestures, who are shamelessly in love with their special other and who see that their love is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Surround yourself with people with healing energy, people who will listen to you attentively, who will offer a helping hand when the world is falling down around you, who will try their best to understand your struggles.

Surround yourself with people that are loud, who aren’t afraid to exist brightly and colorfully, who laugh and cry and have fun and feel with every fiber of their being. 

Most importantly, though, be that kind of person. Put positive energy into the world and you will find it coming back to you. This group of nerds is just a taste of what unapologetic genuine shameless love can accomplish. And I feel grateful every day for the reminder that there’s someone out there who, when you least expect it, will show up and love you and make life a thousand times better.

Online D&D is a chaotic mess.. How the snitzchel do people do it?!

I've just started a campaign for a small group of 3 players. Trying to DM online for the first time, and the first session was... A cluster fuck. There is no other way to describe it... I have no clue how to make this work out, but I hope that time and getting to know each other better will help us figure it out... I know that as the DM it is my job to help the players realize how they can do better, but I feel so lost myself... The online platforms I've found (like roll20) doesn't really work for me, my players are making their characters act like idiots that would not have survived to adulthood like that and they're talking over each other... How do I fix this cluster fuck?! I don't know how to tell them in a nice way that they need to fucking use their brains and not just walk up to the elves in the tavern and try to put them to sleep with magic without saying a word to them first... ELVES ARE IMMUNE TO THAT SHIT AND WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WALKS UP TO STRANGERS AND TRIES TO DO THAT RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM WITHOUT SAYING A WORD?! Just to be clear here, none of my players are first time players, so they should know their stuff.. I play with two of them in face to face campaigns and the last one has many, many years of experience with tabletop RPGs....

… then other times (like today) I spend 5+ hours making character sheets and story notes and maps for a new campaign and it feels like it’s been 30 minutes.
