Long ago in a manner of time not perceived by anything in this franchise, there was one Unmaker.

Just one. A single virus tearing through existence. It was very, very slow going.

Then that one up and died. A deity of that caliber just vanishing made a universe-infecting plague; destroying, yes, but mostly distorting. Destroying would come later but, in the meantime, Primax Alpha strains kept getting infested with reality-breaking animation errors.

So, to keep that from happening... an Ummaker was made every ten universes. This also helped the Light Bringer, because he used to be One Mind spread thin; now the load of all duties is generally spread in instances of ten.

To suit that, both deities are given a lifespan. Ten universes, no matter their perceived length. When one universe ends, they're transferred into their incarnations of another; usually this is of the same strain as before, but it's not uncommon for multiple strains to be included into a workload. Late into the 9th, they'd be assigned a replacement, who would see them off into nothingness.

... or, if they're Unicron, the younger one eats the older one.

Even if one of the twins 'dies' before their time, the damage is significantly less than before. The universe still erodes quickly, sure, but the damage is contained to any universe that incarnation occupies. That's an acceptable loss.

The whole lot are generally hiveminds, sharing info and events and news, but there is no leader or singular identity. It's like twenty really like-minded people stuffed into one room and left to do whatever they want.
