when I was a little kid at some point I got upset with my parents because I didn't have a crucifix in my bedroom and they did- I was like why do YOU get to be safe from vampires??? you're okay with me getting my blood sucked???? so we took a little trip to the catholic store but the one closest to us was run by a group of nuns that had been moved here from romania. I got a little baby pink cross and this sweet old nun was like 'aww, is this a baptism gift?' and I was like no. I need to be protected from vampires. and she immediately got SO serious and was like 'this is the best one we've got, you'll definitely be safe' and since she was literally from vampire land I was convinced she was like, van helsing. like the whole time my parents had been laughing about how cute my fear was but she literally Knew dracula and was taking my concerns seriously I held this over my parents for so long lmfao

If you tell children that boys like to climb trees and girls like to play with dolls, the boys that identify strongly as male will climb trees and the girls that identify strongly as female will play with dolls. 100% of the time.

If you say that men are inherently violent but that good men control themselves, then boys and men who identify strongly as male will gravitate towards violence, while girls and women who identify strongly as female will avoid it. But if boys and men also identify as good they will avoid committing real violence unless it's seen as good violence.

But then you have some men who are not committed to being good, and who identify strongly with their gender but do not feel secure in it. For example they were victimized in some way and that made them feel feminized because being a victim is gender-coded. So they are looking for a way to affirm their gender and they aren't particularly concerned about how that affects anyone else. The quickest and easiest way to do that is to attack someone. Boom. You're a man. 100%. Because even an ounce of femininity would have kept you from doing that.

What people say about gender has an effect in the real world. It's not theoretical. I would very much like to convince people to change what they say about gender but it's like punching slime: all you accomplish is getting your hands dirty.

This is why the people I'm most suspicious of are the *men* who say men are bad and can't be trusted. It's like they're making excuses for themselves.

The idea that men are violent and can't be trusted is just the worst part though. I have two different neighbors where the dads are the ones who are home with the kids most (kudos to them) but the moms still do the laundry.

It ticks me off and to blame that on them being men both excuses them as individuals and gives them some kind of masculinity points for making their wives do everything except pay for child care.
