A carved and painted sculpture of the 1964 Honda CB77 Superhawk motorcycle at 1:1 scale. The Honda CB77 Superhawk is known for its speed, power and reliability and in many ways set the paradigm for modern motorcycles. This particular motorcycle is also the famed motorcycle from the 1970’s best selling novel "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values." In this semi-autobiographical fiction, the author, Robert M. Pirsig, rides a Honda CB77 Super Hawk across the western United States with his son and a copy of Walden by Thoreau. Robert Pirsig wrote: “the real cycle you are working on is the cycle called yourself," participating in a populist desire for self-improvement.In many ways, this carved and painted motorcycle sculpture and its construction is part of a series of dialectical motions, connecting a body to labor to materials to economies—a complex gathering of a self in the world. An additional component of this project involves a series of 36 paintings of Honda CB77 Superhawk motorcycle parts based on images from ebay auctions.
