truly someone who can physically, financially, socially and politically crush you. no wonder cat was fucking terrified when she made a move on laila.

characters in this series that have grown up used to power and can wield it second-hand say some truly chilling things. laila repeatedly implies she holds the lives and fortunes of her neighbours in her hand and would not hesitate to use them to benefit her friends. and kevin casually says in front of witnesses that he can get riko to bribe the judicial system and get andrew free of his drugs. i don't even think they really realize how they sound to normal people because power and privilege are what they've always had within their reach.

On a serious note though Neil talks the way he does because he was raised to be deeply hostile to other people and has no self-respect worth mentioning.

You know the saying, "If you cant say something nice, don't say anything?" Well Neil doesn't know how to say anything nice. That's why when he actually wants to be social, he tends to just shut the hell up so he can't ruin the moment. The best he can manage is yapping about exy.

And he doesn't give a shit when people insult him because he doesn't believe there's anything worse for him to be than alive. Seth, Riko, Kevin, they call him worthless and a waste of air—each for their own reasons—and deep down he doesn't disagree. He thinks he's a bad person who doesn't deserve to live, but being bad means he's not obligated to help the world by offing himself.

Neil is rarely insulted by the digs people make about him as much as he is annoyed by having to hear it. He only retaliates when somebody pokes at people he considers actually worthy of respect, like his mother or the foxes. And when he does retaliate, he rarely refutes any of it, preferring to launch grenades meant to get everybody arguing and forget where the conversation started.

Potential hot take, Neil Josten would make a either a great emergency medicine doctor or trauma surgeon. First off he runs hes and adrenaline junky. He loves GSWs for sure, and like my preceptor I feel like they would call him a black cloud. He'd attract all the level trauma calls. PLUS it would drive Aaron up a wall because all the knowledge came easy to Neil, and he'd end up working with him.

years ago, I don’t particularly remember when, I read on nora’s blog about how the trojans would be champions the following year; I thought “oh, interesting” and never thought of this again

days later, during my post third-re-read-of-aftg and completely obsessed with jean, I thought “isn’t it funny that the ravens lost their first game ever not after kevin, but after jean left? like, how insane is that?”

and, well, once might be a coincidence, but twice? oh, twice, for me, it’s a pattern

not only did the ravens only lose after jean left, but the trojans only WON (or will win?) after jean joined them. so, you can call me delusional (I was deep in my all-jean-only-moreau era) but it’s kinda funny, isn’t it, that they spent years trying to figure it out who between kevin and riko were the best, just for it to be jean fucking moreau

Aaron minyard is selectively mute, I like to think that when he does speak after a while it's usually to insult Neil, also when he is struggling he prefers to stick with Andrew or Nicky but eventually Neil and Kevin
