The Bronx
An interview with Matt Caughthran, vocalist from The Bronx after their show at The Forum, 17th November 2012. (Pictures to follow)聽
So, what do you think of Tunbridge Wells? It is your first time here. Yeah, it is. And it was really cool you know. To be honest with you we were kind of burnt a little bit when we showed up because we did two shows in Kingston; we played last night and we played today at like, 2.
Was the show last night with Bilge Pump? No, no, same three bands. There's a band called Feed the rhino playing tomorrow.. but other than that, it's been with Axes Of and Blasted and so, when we got here today, tonight rather, we were all just kind of like 'woah, we gotta rally, we're really gonna have to do this right now.' And it was really refreshing because you know, sometimes shows like that, they teeter on such a thin line of being awesome and being just kind of average. And I felt the crowd tonight was amazing and they were really ready to have a good time and stoked to see our band come here and play and that's like, something that, you know, as an artist and as a muscian... you know, only the cheapskates take that for granted, we don't take that for granted. When we came out and people were as excited as they were, it didn't matter you know, what we had going on before this or after this, it was just about being in the moment and having a good time and I felt that's what this was, that the show was great... My throats a little sore, we're all a little sore but... fuck it. It was a good time. And you had a good time? I had a blast, yes. How about the venue itself? I think it's cool. I mean, look at this fucking graveyard we're in right now聽(referring to the back garden of the forum) It's nice. It's cool you know, it's different. You don't see venues like this a lot and I know the history of this place and like... at the last two shows, people have been like 'OH you're going there, that place used to be a toilet.' I get that whole thing of it, but outside of that it's a super cool venue and the people who run it are really respectful and really hospitable. It means a lot when you come in here as a band, especially when you've been like, busting your ass playing shows without days off or whatever and you come in here and they take care of you the way they took care of us tonight, and the show went the way it did, and it's just cool you know, you see a lot of venues, you'd be suprised how similar they all look. But this is a refreshing place to play, I really like it.
Can you tell me about you/your own human, outside of your band identity, what do you do? Outside of my聽existence聽of The Bronx, I live in Huntington Beach, California and I am a surfer. I love the ocean, I can't live without the ocean. I grew up in a city, in Downtown LA, East LA area and my Dad used to take me like 45/50 minutes to the beach and as a kid, I just grew such a kinship with the ocean and the coastline that now, as an adult, I don't really feel balanced without it, you know. I have to be by the ocean. So that's what I do when I'm home. I hang out.. I got this band, a mariachi band, I sing in a couple other bands with friends and just always try to do something creative, so there's always music to be made when I'm home and I do a lot of painting. What are your paintings like? Um, I can't draw so I prefer abstract art. I've never really been a detail guy in my life, I'm just not, it's not how I'm wired. I do appreciate how I think everyone see's the world just a little bit differently from the person to the right or to the left of them. So the thing I enjoy about painting is just kind of sitting in to my own brain and enjoying how I see the world and putting it out, taking the time and patience it takes to create something with multiple layers and multiple ideas all rolled into one. And it quickly turns into, all the things you start with in a painting, it ends totally different from the way you kind of started to go with. It's a really cool thought process and journey thing for me. So yeah, a little on the abstract side but I love it. Do you have any of it on line? I'm working on it. I'm building a collection at the moment. I've got about 6 or 7 that I'm really proud of. I'm trying to get to 15 and then get them up.
Everything kind of feeds off of activity, you know, I find that if you, whether it's music or painting or surfing or just waking up, I find, that if you wake up and you have the idea in your head that you want to do something, once you start those wheels in the motion they can take you to a zillion different places. Is there anybody you want to shout out, into the world? I'd just like to say it's nice, this last week, we've been playing towns that we don't really play a lot and it's been really refreshing, you know because, it's just nice to see a different side of England. Its cool to meet new people and play in new clubs. It's been really inspiring because it's good to know that like, there's people around every sort of nook and cranny and around every corner that care about music and care about art and that's never something that gets old and so I'm just very stoked to be a part of this band and playing here, in Tunbridge Wells and thank everyone for coming out and thank you for the interview and life goes on.
