A smoke break for pilots of the 848th Fighter Aviation Regiment, 194th Fighter Aviation Division, 17th Air Army, 4th Ukrainian Front, near a La-5F fighter at the Yambol airfield in Bulgaria. On the right is flight commander Junior Lieutenant Boris Petrovich Lazarev (born 1923).
Lazarev's flight had 6 group victories to its credit. On 4 February 1945, Lazarev did not return from his 13th combat sortie and was removed from the Red Army lists as missing in action by order of the Main Directorate of the People's Commissariat of Defense on 12 July 1945.
It was later discovered that while carrying out a combat mission over Hungarian territory, he was seriously wounded by enemy anti-aircraft artillery fire and his leg was amputated. On 6 November 1947, he was awarded the Order of the Red Star.
