Old Music Hits~!
Old music for me (Gold! 104.3 FM! being what I grew up with) is so hit or miss, I feel like I find some classic rock just grinds my gears and some is great. I guess it helps when it's stuff I grew up with, but even that can be a bit hit or miss if I'm overexposed to it or (annoyingly) if it's everyone jamming out to that one obvious song by that band (Bohemian Rhapsody). Anyway I made myself a Spotify playlist of old music I like so I have a go to playlist when I'm in the mood for oldies, and also maybe to prove to myself/others that I can like old music too. Turns out I like a lot of New Wave, which I guess isn't surprising but it feels a bit like I'm too predictable. So, not sure how I feel about it really... This post is to share my favourite finds from making and listening to this playlist and they are (drum roll): - Rock Lobster by the B-52's - Senses Working Overtime by XTC - Word Up by Cameo - Mexican Radio by Wall Of Voodoo - Der Kommissar by Falco - A Little Respect by Erasure - Blow Up The Pokies by The Whitlams Rock Lobster is like... spoopy surf-rock plus simple odd lyrics and just such a fun catchy combo? Like it's meant to be a scary rock lobster they're talk-singing about... But such a jam.
Senses Working Overtime: why do I like this wingy weak singing in the verses so much...!? Anyway who can't like a football or biscuit-shaped world? This song goes through so many moods. And who doesn't want to taste the difference between a lemon and a lime? Word Up I already knew I liked a lot. That's not new. Putting it here is a bit of a cop-out, I'm afraid... Oh wait, it might still be interesting to not-me people. I hear there are a lot of those... Blow Up The Pokies is the same tbh.
Mexican Radio not sure if it's like... suss at all? Not knowing much about economics is fun..? Idk. Der Kommissar: I miss other language music being OK to just like, being popular. And it's fun listening to something where I pick up a new word or two whenever I listen to it. My German is so rusty.
A Little Respect - I always (hehe) liked Erasure for obvious robot unicorn-related reasons, but hadn't listened to other songs before. Not sure about the lyrics but it is a fun song. Some others: Rasputin - I kinda knew I liked this one when I made the playlist. I think when I originally heard this it felt like more stereotyping of something Russian, but it's grown on me. It's a dumb story about something actually complicated that's OK. Just because people are unoriginal sometimes and stereotype you because of something doesn't mean that's all there is to that thing. You don't have to give it to them. Personal Jesus - I'm just glad it's not originally by Marilyn Manson. And honestly I do like this version, I think it's a bit sad when people prefer a cover and can't enjoy the original any more. It'll be funny if it turns out this was also a cover. I'm Going Slightly Mad - Always loved this Queen song. I'm also partial to the other Queen songs I grew up with, but decided to highlight this one.

I do give almost all the credit for my love of Interstellar to theoretical physicist Kip Thorne who bullied Nolan at every turn into keeping the science as realistic as possible even when Nolan threw tantrums abt it because he wanted to sacrifice what was plausible for what was exciting and Kip Thorne just kept being like sorry is the theoretical capabilities of spacetime travel not exciting enough for you? Grow up.

If you're in Australia you'll already know this, but for our international readers, basically the whole of Australia ground to a halt today because one of our two mobile/internet networks - Optus - just completely shat its dacks for about 9 hours, taking out the country's phones, internet and banking.
The funniest part though, is that apparently when the national broadcaster tried to reach out to find out what was going on - they discovered the quite forseeable problem that everyone at Optus used Optus for their phone and internet, so there was basically no way for their company to contact anyone inside or outside the company to work out what was going on or to try and fix it.
What a country.

Y'all. The Exorcist movie did not cause the Satanic Panic.
It laid some cultural groundwork, sure, but The Exorcist released in 1973. The actual Satanic Panic didn't start until 1980, with the publishing of Michelle Remembers.
And it wasn't just a bunch of people freaking out for no reason. The Moral Majority had been turning American evanglical Christians into a cohesive voting block over the past 7ish years. When Michelle Remembers was published, America had a freshly born massive political block that explicitly benefitted from hysteria around tales of satanic possession.

Dear #SagAftraMembers:
We are thrilled & proud to tell you that today your TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee voted unanimously to approve a tentative agreement with the AMPTP.  As of 12:01 a.m. PT on Nov. 9, our strike is officially suspended & all picket locations are closed. We will be in touch in the coming days with information about celebration gatherings around the country.
In a contract valued at over one billion dollars, we have achieved a deal of extraordinary scope that includes "above-pattern" minimum compensation increases, unprecedented provisions for consent and compensation that will protect members from the threat of AI, and for the first time establishes a streaming participation bonus. Our Pension & Health caps have been substantially raised, which will bring much needed value to our plans. In addition, the deal includes numerous improvements for multiple categories including outsize compensation increases for background performers, and critical contract provisions protecting diverse communities.
We have arrived at a contract that will enable SAG-AFTRA members from every category to build sustainable careers. Many thousands of performers now and into the future will benefit from this work. Full details of the agreement will not be provided until the tentative agreement is reviewed by the SAG-AFTRA National Board.
We also thank our union siblings — the workers that power this industry — for the sacrifices they have made while supporting our strike and that of the Writers Guild of America. We stand together in solidarity and will be there for you when you need us.
Thank you all for your dedication, your commitment, your solidarity throughout this strike. It is because of you that these improvements became possible.
