October Exhaustion

a/n: This one goes out to my fellow college students stressed about midterms. You guys got this and i hope this fic gives you comfort in some way!

Your eyes narrowed glaring down at your computer screen, a white light illuminating on your skin. Your fingers cramped, aching from the consistent tapping you were doing for your schoolwork. You had stayed in this hard comfortable seat for more than 3 hours—back aching from the lack of support. A sigh escaped your throat as you looked out to the window of your apartment.

October, a month supposedly filled with fun always managed to fill you with stress. Professors and classes had a way of piling on work. Projects after projects were gathering up, and you were the unlucky few who had to manage it. The lack of sleep and stress of expectations for your performance made you feel exhausted. Each day was becoming more draining than the next, you hoped your saving grace would be November.

Your arms went to reach your shoulder, massaging the tense muscles. What would you do to be free right now, enjoying the fall season? Maybe you’d be able to go out to grab a latte at your favorite cafe, pick out and plan Halloween outfits with your friends, decorate your house—be free in general.

Your eyes retreated from the colorful trees swaying across your window back to your document. Your stomach churned reading your term paper. It felt like no matter what you were doing, no matter how much you studied, no matter whatever you did to prepare yourselves—the fear of failure never left you.

You jolted up feeling a large hand pressing on your shoulder, a gasp escaping your lips. The hand immediately retracted as you turned your head to see your boyfriend. Large emerald eyes looked down at you in worry, his thin pink lips formed in a frown.

“I-I’m sorry I didn’t mean to scare you! I just wanted to check in on you. You’ve been working for a while after all,” Midoriya stuttered. You stared at him, sighing once more. Your fingers danced across your keyboard typing out the rest of the words you needed in order to complete the project.

“As much as I’d love that Izu, I have to finish this. After this, I have to prepare for a presentation and then my notes. I can’t afford a break right now,” you muttered in response. Midoriya bit his lip, hesitantly leaving. You felt your heart hurt when he did. As much as you wanted to spend time with him, you couldn’t. The idea of those deadlines refused to let you get comfortable.

As soon as he left, Midoriya returned a sandwich in hand along with a hydro flask filled with water. He set them down on the desk next to you.

“…At least eat something baby. I’m worried about you. I don’t think you’ve been taking care of yourself as you should be,” he admitted. The longingness in your heart returned, closing your eyes to try to fight the feeling. Midoriya was always like this, kind and selfless. He always doted on you, making sure your health was alright. He was a considerate person.

So why did it hurt so much to see him reaching out like this?

You looked down noticing a droplet plopped onto your laptop, a few more coming down to join it. Your eyes hurt, feeling the liquid traveling down your plush cheeks. Midoriya’s eyes softened, wrapping his large arms around you. You sniffled, biting your lip. You wanted to be strong. You were alright. You could take this. It’s just school. It’s just school.

It’s just school…

“Izuku I can’t do this anymore. I can’t! Everything is due and I don’t have time for anything. I’m going to end up failing all of these classes because of it. I’m sorry I’ve been a terrible significant other and having given you the attention you need. I just—it sucks. Everything sucks right now and I know I’m supposed to be strong and everyone goes through this but—”

“Who said that?” Midoriya interjected. You paused, eyes widened. Your tears falling onto Midoriya’s sunkissed freckled skin. You felt him hug you tighter in his arms as if he was trying to weigh you down.

“Baby, you don’t have to pretend to be strong. School is hard. Classes are hard. Grades don’t define you and you don’t have to fear failure. No one is going to judge you, alright? You just…really need to take care of yourself. I’m here every step of the way, do you understand?” he murmured into your shoulder. You couldn’t reply to him, your sobbing made sure of that.

Leaning away from the hug, Midoriya flashed a sad smile wiping the tears on your face. His lips peppering kisses all over your face. That was always Midoriya. He always had a way of making you feel grounded and anchored throughout any of your insecurities and worries. His love managed to do that. How you got so lucky is a question you repeatedly ask yourself.

“You are so smart. Hardworking. Passionate. Great. Amazing. And the one person in the world that I love wholeheartedly, alright? Can you take a break for me…please? I know you haven’t eaten anything all day,” he begged. You sniffed, nodding your head in agreement as Midoriya flashed a brighter smile. Midoriya slowly closed your laptop, moving it away to place the sandwich in front of you.

“…Thank you Midoriya. I’m sorry,” you whispered. Midoriya shook his head along with his scar covered hands.

“Don’t worry about it! I love you and only want the best for you! You can lean on me. I’m here for you,” he declared. A rush of warmth ran over you as a smile crept onto your lips. You grabbed the sandwich feeling Midoriya’s hand onto your shoulder once more.

Midterm season was known to be the worst, notorious for the downfall of college students everywhere. Things were difficult for now, but they would pass eventually. You had someone supporting you through the way, reminding you of your capabilities.

“I love you so much Izuku,” you stated. Midoriya hummed, slight pink rushing to his cheeks.

“I love you more (Y/n).”
